Hey everyone! I've been lurking for a while, but I finally got an invite to the open house for A/C on Jan. 23rd. I'm really excited to get the process started! This might seem like a silly question, but this is an entirely new industry for me and I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row. What is the dress code for the open house? I'm assuming that it's a given that jeans and sneakers are out, but what level of formality is expected? Suit and tie, khakis and polo, something in-between? Any insight you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

A lot of people show up dressed very casually. No one will say anything, but it's absolutely a bad idea. They WILL remember who didn't dress up enough. A suit is probably overkill, but definitely khakis and a button down dress shirt at the minimum. Sneakers are forbidden on LIRR property at all times.

Understood, thank you very much for the info! I went out and got my suit pressed just in case but khakis and a button down would be much more comfortable! I definitely wouldn't want to show up under dressed, but there's a such thing as being over dressed too, I'm glad I asked ahead of time!

Hello All,

To anyone who has past the S & D test and the panel interview. Does anyone know how long it takes for HR to reach out to you for the next step afterwards? For the medical and physical assessments. Thank you.

I've been reading through the past posts after I've posted this question. I kind of have an idea of how the situation can be like. I've reached out to HR regarding the passing of exam, hopefully there's good news soon.

business casual is fine but wearing a suit and tie shows you are serious about yourself and the job. ofcourse you still have to pass the exams and interview. good luck. all your hard work will be rewarded.

Are you referring to the initial question about passing the S&D exam? I was concerned about weather a class is scheduled for me for soon since I haven't heard anything for almost 2 months passing the S&D. I did send an email to HR but no response yet.

The presenter today at the AC open house today said they plan on putting 3 more classes in with the soonest scheduled for March. He mentioned one just went one in last week.

I encourage you to keep checking on MTA careers site if you’re still interested in a career with the railroad. Metro North posts up its engineer or conductor posting I think once a year (can’t confirm it to be exactly true or not).

Thanks! I’m actually an internal candidate so just trying to move out of the office environment. Just waiting to see if anything comes out of the two open houses I’ve attended for LIRR.

Hello all,

I was invited to the open house on the 19th and was just invited today to attend the S&D overview on the 4th of February. The only problem is I have an appointment with a specialist that I have been trying to see for a while that was previously scheduled for the same day (my luck). Does anyone how lenient are they on rescheduling the class? Or should I just not go to my doctor? Any relevant information is appreciated and thanks in advance.

I've been to the overview last year. That's when they hand out the study material and record your attendance. They will not change the date because there are near 70-80 people that day.

Hey I was also invited to the open house on the 19th. Did they contact you through email or phone call? Been dying to hear back.

Attendance is mandatory to continue with the process. They won’t reschedule you. Good luck!

Yes I understand that they won’t change the date, I was just wondering if anyone else had encountered a similar situation where they had previously scheduled affairs and if they were flexible in the sense that they could move you into a different class. I appreciate your insight. If you don’t mind me asking, what was the day like when you attended?

We started 8:30 AM and was let go around noon. The overview had a more detailed explanation on what the actual hiring process will be, including work benefits and work schedules. But most importantly the review of the S&D test, which is the most important part and what you will focus on the next 5 weeks after.
