zacster Posted August 24, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2023 Since this is coming soon, how about we keep track of all cars being retired, and movements between the yards. I would assume the worst of the cars will go first regardless of which yard they are in, but maybe once the real lemons are gone it won't matter. There are currently 9 train sets of R211, including the open gangway cars but not the SIR cars. At some point they will run out of room to keep both the R46 and the R211 fleets, although I get the impression from reading here that there is still room at the inn with the spare factor way down. I go by 9th Ave/37th St from time to time and there is plenty of space there it seems. And that is also the "last stop" for cars before scrapping.
trainfan22 Posted August 24, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 24, 2023 I don't think they have scrapped all the remaining R32s yet, they probably want to get rid of all the 32s before they start scrapping R46s So far, the sets retired.. • The 36th Street shooting set • The set derailed by the homeless man at 14th/8th • The set derailed at 125th Street Far as I know these sets are still on NYCT property, no 46s have been sent to Ohio for scrapping yet.

Not soon, they’ll probably be all retired by mid 2025 or 2026

I'm guessing that once they have 10 operating sets of R211 they'll start thinning the herd and pulling them aside. My guess is the problem cars have already been pulled but not officially, why send something out that causes problems. When they have 20 sets operating they will start actual scrapping. When they start pulling cars in Coney Island and sending replacements over from Pitkin you'll know it's time.

They will have to have a new contact in place for more scrapping. The R46's i don't think has asbestos so it might be much easier for them to get scrapped within the NY metro area. The remaining R32's it's unknown, the Ohio contract only called for half of the fleet (if i'm correct. I heard this from a reliable source) 18 hours ago, Chris89292 said: Not soon, they’ll probably be all retired by mid 2025 or 2026 I would say 2027 I wouldn't expect to see them start scrapping R46s until mid 2024 with retirements starting in late this year into early 2024. They have to increase CI spare factor first before scrapping anything.
zacster Posted September 13, 2023 Author Share #7 Posted September 13, 2023 I wonder if this vandalism incident will mean the retirement of some cars. They need to cannibalize windows from sidelined cars and they certainly aren't going to order windows to replace the ones they cannibalize to put them into sidelined cars. At least I would hope they won't.

zacster Posted September 20, 2023 Author Share #15 Posted September 20, 2023 I'm starting to think that even though there aren't any cars officially retired there are enough R211s + R160s from the M to consider them done. By the time the R160s need to go back to the M there will be more than enough additional R211s to replace them.
