Question on SAS...

It has been discussed before, again we don't know. It isn't even done yet. Though the Second Avenue Subway has connections to the Coney Island Yard due to the (Q), and it has connections to the Jamaica Yard due to the (F). Though we don't know for certain what cars would use the line or the yard they would be based out of. We would know only when Second Avenue is complete and most of us would be dead by then.

Hi all.

I don't know if it's been discussed before, but does anyone know where the Second Avenue Subway's yard will be once it's built, or where it would/will be?

There will be space to lay up trains past 96th St in phase one, in phase 2, it will be past what ever station is the temp. terminal. From the track drawings, it looks as though there may not be space for lay ups if and when the SAS gets to 125th St.

I dont think it'll ever go south of 63rd St. It will get up to 125th, where the (Q) will terminate, a couple tail tracks on 2Av north of 125th for layups/possible Bronx extension, and using the yard and equipment the (Q) uses now (Coney). Unless they build tracks directly from the 63rd tube in Queens onto 2Av, Jamaica is difficult as the trains would have to ping pong near the Lex Av Station, not an ideal place to turn, especially on a regular basis. What would probably happen is service will become more frequent earlier in the morning so there will be enough southbound service out of 125th that there will only be a need for two put-ins from those LU tracks.

Well if the (T) is ever extended north into the Bronx in whatever future that would be it could use the Concourse Yard in the Bronx if it uses the former 3rd Avenue El alignment. Or it could be extended into the Montague Street Tunnel along with the (R) and get to Coney Island. Or if there isn't too much money left connect it to the (F) east of Houston Street and have it run on the Culver Viaduct to Coney Island. I doubt all that would happen though there isn't much money and if it happens we would most likely be dead. Though it would happen someday.

What would make sense is to run the (M) up to Astoria and put the (G) back onto Queens Blvd, especially if they decide to put the (G)'s southern terminal back to Smith-9th. By all accounts, the newly-rerouted (M) is working well as a 6th Ave. line, and routing it to Astoria would make it even more popular, IMHO.

C'mon Peter...you should know better - you made the track maps yourself! ;)

Apart from bringing back the (W), another option might be to increase the frequency on the (R) line and send the (R) to Astoria instead. The (N) would serve the Queens Boulevard local together with the (M) and - maybe - the (G). The extra (R) trains could also serve as a replacement for the old (Mx) train into Brooklyn that was cut back earlier this year.

Then we run into the problem that kicked the (R) off Astoria in the first place, the lack of any access to a yard without having trains go out of their way to get there. As of currently, the only line that goes out of its way to get to the yard is the (G) and that's because its termini are in the middle of Jamaica and Coney Island yards.

I am not familiar with the yard structure of the NYC Subway. However, this impracticality set aside, you could make do with the current three subway routes using the Broadway trunk line.

We'll just have to wait and see what lines will run over the Broadway line once the first portion of the SAS gets finished (if ever). If the MTA is still in financial dire straits, Astoria riders might well be the ones paying the bill for better East Side access.

The extension of the (M) to Astoria isn't a good idea. They would have to build a cross under or a cross over for the (M) from 57th Street to 5th Avenue. It is too expensive and it could be impossible. The only way they could bring more service to Astoria and to remake the (N) as an express is to reincarnate the (W).
