Sounds like a pretty cool idea, although, I don't think keeping having 3 different lines running via Montague is a good idea. That is if it's running during weekdays and not just weekends and late nights. Although, wouldn't it be better to extend trains to Church Av via the ? trains can make express stops on Culver and run local stops from Church to Coney Island and maybe even be extended towards 36th St? If anything, run shuttle service between Atlantic and Coney Island via 4th Av Express and West End, splitting up service.

You didn’t say anything about substitute service on Brighton. Maybe have the resume its regular route after DeKalb and have a shuttle train between Stillwell and 36th on either the Sea Beach or West End, with the running through service on the other line. During March to November 1995, this is almost exactly what they did when they closed the Manhattan Bridge to trains entirely outside of rush hours. Service went something like this: - Shuttle from 36th St to Stillwell via West End - 205th St to 34th St/Herald Square - Metropolitan to Chambers (normal rush hour service back then was to Bay Parkway; midday service was to 9th Ave) - Ditmars to Stillwell via Montague and Sea Beach. Local in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn (normal service back then was express weekdays in Brooklyn while the ran local, local other times, as well as local full time in Queens and Manhattan) - 21st/Queensbridge to Stillwell via Broadway Express to Canal, then via the between Canal and DeKalb. Resumed its regular route after DeKalb, but ran local to Stillwell in place of the , which was suspended below 34th St (normal service back then was the running express to/from Brighton Beach via 6th Ave to/from 21st/Queensbridge). - unchanged The big differences today are that the is part time, the is express weekdays in Manhattan, the runs 24/7 from 2nd Ave and the runs via 6th Ave. So the would be suspended, like you said. The would most likely be cut off at 34th, because that’s much easier operationally. Ending the at 2nd Ave would likely cause a big logjam there with trains leaving the station merging with the , then the merging in a few hundred meters away before Broadway-Lafayette. As for the , it should be able to run normal service after DeKalb, unless there is also something preventing trains from Manhattan from accessing the Brighton Line. Atlantic Av-Barclays Center to Stillwell Av - late night service pattern - local in Manhattan and Brooklyn via the between Canal St and DeKalb Av rerouted via the from Canal St to DeKalb Av. Downtown trains local from 57 St-7 Av to Canal St if this change had to be 24/7, then the service frequencies would be: - every 10 minutes on the Brooklyn segment. Normal frequency in the Manhattan/Bronx Segment - every 12 minutes between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Select rush hour trains from Astoria terminate at 34 St-Herald Sq every 20 minutes or so. - every 5 minutes - every 12 minutes. *this would account for the limited train capacity thru the Montague Tunnel and lower Broadway Line. I think the train cap is 22 TPH. But if it were 26, then the would each be every 10 minutes. the only true bottleneck would be 57 St-7 Av, because the shuttles from Astoria to 34 St-Herald Sq would use both express tracks at 57 St and switching between express/local north of 57 St, while the would switch between the express and local tracks south of 57 St southbound. Interesting G.O. Although, wouldn't the at this point just be the running? Is it possible to have the basically run the same route the runs? Changes I would've done would be: trains run from Bedford Park Boulevard to 59th St normal, then run local via the to Jay St-MetroTech. Then from there, it runs express from Jay St to Church Av terminating with the (if possible) or to Kings Highway during rush hours. I don't know about how many trains per hour it would run like this though, but I would keep it running the same amount of hours a day so that at least you don't just basically duplicate the . I do not know how doable this is having service run like this. Can't you technically have the make a return to Bay Parkway? Just curious, pretty well thought out, although it definitely would be an interesting 3 weeks if this actually happened.

darkstar8983 Posted December 14, 2020 Share #89 Posted December 14, 2020 For an 8th Avenue Full Closure (34 St-Penn Station to Jay St-MetroTech) - Extended to 59 St-Columbus Circle during overnights and weekends Weekdays: - Trains run from 207 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle (Express), then via the to 34 St-Herald Sq, then via the to Jay St-MetroTech. Local in Brooklyn (again, could be local service for the Lefferts trains only) - Brighton Beach to DeKalb Av, then via the to 96 St. No service between Bedford Park Blvd and Grand St. - Frequency reduced to every 8-10 minutes rush hours due to sharing of track capacity on the Manhattan Bridge with the * - 168 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle (via Local) - Trains would terminate on the Uptown Express track - trains would run every 12 minutes* * and trains would make the stop at 59 St-Columbus Circle uptown on the local track - Select trains would make local stops along Central Park West to supplement service - Six-minute frequency overall, split as 12 minute headways for local service and 12-minute headways for express service. - Jamaica Center to 34 St-Penn Station - Trains relay using the pocket track south of 34 St, and run on the express tracks at 42 St. - Frequency of Rush Hour service reduced to every 7-8 minutes. *(Local tracks closed full time from 59 St-Columbus Circle to Jay St-MetroTech, but only express tracks between 30 St and 50 St remain in service weekdays from 5:30AM to 9:30PM) - Runs from Metropolitan Av to Essex St, then via the to Chambers St - Rush hour frequency reduced (no 96 St-2 Av rush hour trips). Weekends - Same pattern as above (except local on Central Park West Late Nights, and local in Brooklyn Weekends + Late Nights) -Suspended - Rerouted via the from 5 Av-53 St (or Roosevelt Av, if we want to include 53 St tunnel work in this closure) to 2 Av. - Normal weekend service -------- For a full-time Broadway Line Closure *concurrent with the addition of a reverse signaling at the downtown local track at 34 St-Herald Sq - trains run in 2 sections: 1. Astoria-Ditmars Blvd to 34 St-Herald Sq (49 St skipped northbound) 2. Atlantic Av-Barclays Center to Stillwell Av (via 4 Av Express/Sea Beach all times - including late nights) *frequency - every 5-6 minutes on the Astoria section due to both downtown tracks being available in this scenario, every 10 minutes on the Brooklyn Section. If the downtown local track is NOT available, then the would run every 8-10 minutes in the Astoria section. trains rerouted via 6 Av in both directions between Lexington Av-63 St and DeKalb Av. Express service on 6 Av and trains would run via the tracks from north of 47-50 Sts to DeKalb Av, to allow the to remain on 6 Av for this closure trains run only from Court St to Bay Ridge-95 St via 4 Av Local *A Forest Hills-71 Av to 34 St-Herald Sq section could be run every 10 minutes if the demand for Astoria service is low enough that thee other track could be spared for the . Otherwise, both tracks are for the . Again, this is contingent on there being a reverse signal available to run trains northbound out of the downtown local track. suspended

Broadway Closure: rerouted via 6 Av some trains terminate at Canal St (or completely suspended, replaced by the , some trains terminating at Canal St or Whitehall St.) 6 Av Closure train rerouted via Broadway to Astoria (stops at 49 St) train rerouted via Broadway to 96 St train suspended Yeah, I'm going to agree with what he said about doing it in phases because it would be impossible to suspend service running through both Montague and Manhattan Bridge as not only would that piss off a lot of people from South Brooklyn, but it would've been hell. People at Atlantic Av would be crowding the , , , and just to get into Manhattan which is already crowded as is with how small those trains are compared to B division cars. If something were to happen along either Clark St or Joralemon St tunnel, it would be even worse. You also have the issue of crowding the , , and . The and already have issues as is because they both have to share a tunnel between Hoyt and Canal St and the having to deal with the , , and the . I'd bring back the for the purpose of at least serving Grand St as it is a station that is forced to not have any service which means trains would be have to terminate at 34 St-Herald Sq. How the hell are trains going to run to Bay Ridge-95 St? There are no connections that allow for this to occur whatsoever, if you're assuming that because of the transfer at 4 Av-9 St, then you're dead wrong. trains cannot terminate at 14 St-Union Sq as there are no switches over there to begin with. There is no way for trains to run via West End without running along Manhattan Bridge, unless you extend trains along West End from Coney Island which would already be a major issue because of both closures of the Bridge and Tunnel. The Franklin Av cannot replace the along Brighton as it runs a length of 2-75 Feet long cars. Even if you were to add in more cars, the stations along the Franklin Av line are way to small to add in more train cars. Not to mention, keeping them at 2 cars would mean a capacity issue, which is why the whenever it couldn't run to Manhattan from Prospect Park still ran only to terminate at Prospect Park. If the didn't go ahead and demolish to halfass its reconstruction, maybe then we would've seen the extended from Prospect Park to Coney Island and not confuse people.

Well you definitely learned something, just to point out something, trains don't run during the weekend so it wouldn't matter if you said they're suspended. They also cannot operate to Coney Island as it will interfere with trains trying to terminate and it cannot terminate at Atlantic because there is no relay switch for that to happen and it will also interfere with service trying to run through Atlantic Av. Why not extended the in Brooklyn to Atlantic Av and have trains run local from 59 St? This would allow better connections for people taking the to at least connect to the , , , , and .

Sure its running via the , but there's no need to even keep the running at all, just have the running only during the weekdays and other times the will continue to run. It's going to be running the same stops anyways. The reason I used the and is because the is used for only rush hour service normally, so having the run on weekends and late nights would be very confusing for a lot of people
