NJ Transit's recently released 5 year capital program shows some interesting and significant plans for the bus system.

Bus Fleet - Once the MCI contract is complete, the new transit/suburban replacement will begin. The plan notes that "most" of the NABIs in northern NJ will be replaced with artics. Now, "most" can mean as low as 50.1%, but that would be a major change to the local fleet. All-electric buses will be part of the short-term plan, starting with 68 40-footers and 32 artics. NJT says they expect the bus fleet to be 100% electric by 2040.

Bus Garages - In addition to the already announced Ridgefield Park garage, there is a plan for another new northern garage. NJT announces in the plan they wish to replace the 4 oldest garages that have not yet received significant rehabilitation: Market Street (built in 1903), Big Tree (1916), Fairview (1945), and Oradell (1960). Ridgefield Park will replace Oradell and will likely be a replacement (temporary or permanent) for Fairview. The second new garage, if located in the Clifton area, could cover both Market Street and Big Tree. New garages will be designed to handle 45-foot coaches, 60-foot artics, and the upcoming all-electric fleet with the necessary charging capacity. Ridgefield Park is also expected to include a park & ride lot, which would alleviate the load at Vince Lombardi.

Bus Infrastructure - In addition to a number of smaller projects, the 1500-space North Bergen Park & Ride lot would receive a multi-level parking garage that would add 2000 more spaces.

Now on the rail side, the expansions discussed are:

- The addition of a third track between Waldwick and Suffern.

- Two more tracks (for a total of four) on the Raritan Valley Line.

- A westbound track for the Waterfront Connector track that allows trains from Hoboken to go on the NEC.

On the light rail side:

- The River Line DMUs are to be overhauled.

- The remaining Newark City LRVs that are still in their 3-sections configuration will be changed to 5-sections.

- A track that will bypass the HBLR junction at Hoboken.

- The extension of the HBLR from Tonnelle Avenue to Englewood.

- The extension of the HBLR to Route 440 (which I think is already underway).

- A grade crossing elimination at Paterson Avenue.

  • I'm assuming the 60-ft electrics are XE60s? What about the 40-fters?
  • Also, are XDE40s/XD40s or Novas replacing most of the NABIs? And what will replace the suburbans? Nova LFS Suburbans?
  • Also, is NJT getting any D45 CRT LEs? (maybe D45 CRTe LE models?)
  • What will replace the 31-ft NABIs? I can only think of the following options:
    • Alexander Dennis Enviro200
    • Grande West Vicinity
    • Gillig Advantage Low Floor
    • Gillig Advantage BRT
  • What artics are replacing the NABIs? XD60s?

You have a bad habit of asking 5135234325 questions when there's very little answers.

1. NJT will NEVER get Gilligs. Gillig does not want to work with big-time TAs like MTA and NJT.
2. NJT will also NEVER get Nova LFSs in general....seeing as their entire fleet is basically owned by New Flyer, it'll cut costs on their end to just get New Flyers.
3. Why would NJT need to get D45 CRT LEs when they're getting over 700 D4500CTs? In the future, they probably will, but not right now....
4. They'd most likely get 35ft Xcelsiors(if they fit in Morris Garage).
5. The electric artics are definitely New Flyer...the 40fter is currently undecided.....NJT is currently getting 8 Proterras, three operating in Newark and five operating in Camden.
6. If the current XD60 order doesn't answer your question about what would be replacing the NABIs, I don't know what will, seeing as they don't have any local hybrid buses...

The tl;dr version: Wait and see......

4 tracking the Raritan Valley line? That came out of left field...

I wonder if it's because that line shares the two tracks it has with freight trains, but I never heard of RVL service being negativity impacted by sharing it's tracks with freight trains.

Exactly; never heard of any problems with freight on Raritan, either.  Makes me question their priorities- the money could be better spent restoring passenger service on the Susquehanna Line, or the Lackawanna Cutoff..

Let's hope the bus garage/park & ride planned for Ridgefield Park can move along smoothly. The land itself (besides the Hampton Inn) does not look usable in its current state (rugged terrain) and does not seem like an ideal location for any commercial development. Hope the land owners settle before it gets to trial. Knowing the state of affairs, NJT has a lot of good reasons for using the land.

Looks like some officials from Ridgefield Park won't go down without a fight:

This is from the Sierra Club's website, written in their words:

https://www.sierraclub.org/new-jersey/blog/2020/10/nj-transit-ridgefield-park-bus-depot-another-bad-plan-wrong-place

Personally, this is not a good location for commercial development as it is not very accessible (in an already busy location) and is in the middle of an industrial setting. Bergen County does not need any more malls, and residential apartments would not go well right at the confluence of two very big highways. Buses can take cars off the road with a Park and Ride that is planned as well. Eminent domain will likely prevail, but hopefully there isn't too much delay.
