buswizard Posted January 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 12, 2010 Hello, I saw a year-old thread here but I don't wanna bump it so I started a new topic. Here you can post your favorite night or general dark pictures. RokuSix Posted January 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 12, 2010 Ugh, I am so, so, so bad at nighttime photography! Even dusk screws me up. Anyone have any tips on how to take pictures at night? My camera lacks manual settings, by the way.

Fresh Pond Posted January 12, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 12, 2010 I'm not a big fan of night shots (they come out crappy) but I do take some occasionally like these...

Harry Posted January 12, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 12, 2010 Not a fan, why not? This shot is amazing. The shallow depth of field is a winner in this photograph.

I can't lie I am a fan of it lol...I like getting the shots that depict motion with all the traffic lights, etc

SoSpectacular Posted January 12, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 12, 2010 Two of my favorite night shots. Like RokuSix, my digital camera also lacks manual settings so I set the exposure to the lowest setting, choose the right white balance setting and stand as still as my skinny-ass frame can be, 'Cloudy' works pretty good in the night for me and flourescent for those areas brightly lit... I suggest get a tripod or something...and set it to the lowest ISO settings as possible. And usually you get best results when your subject is not moving. Cait Sith Posted January 13, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 13, 2010 Since this is general night time photography, I moved it to the correct section.

Dan05979 Posted January 13, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 13, 2010 I thold this kid before, this dosen't look real, it looks like a model bus in a fake city, thats probably one of my favorite pics on here.
Joe Posted January 13, 2010 Share #17 Posted January 13, 2010 I agree 100% with Harry, that is an awesome photo!!! Keep it up!I still don't know how to do that kind of effect... It's actually very easy once you understand depth of field. Remember, there is a 'near limit' and a 'far limit'. That said, I typically think anything involving a bus blows chunks, but that is a technically and compositionally great photo.
fordhamkid7721 Posted January 13, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 13, 2010 And to think I was about to delete it...I need to develop a good artistic eye. I saw it as just another pic at first, but I'm glad you guys like it though. Inspires me to take more night shots

I think part of it has to do with the fact that he used a photoshop type software to pourposely blurr out the signs and everything past the street. Grand Concourse Posted January 14, 2010 Share #22 Posted January 14, 2010 I too generally do not favor night shots as well even underground shots. Unless I have a DSLR cam or something that has 10x optical zoom, P&S cams are out as far as night shot goes. It would have to be very still [the object] or it will be messed up. That's why I prefer to take above ground or daytime shots more. I'll post some eventually. From a P&S I know the pics seems hazy, I probably would have to just leave the original image alone than to try and 'brighten' them.
Joe Posted January 14, 2010 Share #23 Posted January 14, 2010 P&S cams are out as far as night shot goes. They don't even do well when you have plenty of light, forget night scenes with a P&S. Small sensor size and high pixel density make them noisy POSs even at low ISO.

buswizard Posted January 14, 2010 Author Share #25 Posted January 14, 2010 I have a P&S that is not a POS and I love it! True, I need to hold still, but that's a VERY TINY setback. But everything else is like WOW and I have no regrets. I don't care for an SLR at this moment. These pictures from last night were all taken WITHOUT a tripod. Now if you're talking about moving objects then that's a different story, but I am not complaining at all.
