Hello from Madrid, Spain!

Hi all,

I'm a commuter-rail train driver (not a loco engineer, as commuter-rail drivers here only get to drive several types of MUs) in Madrid, Spain, but have lived in Boston a bit over nine years (1989-98) and have always been also a hardcore railroad buff, which is why I'm interested in joining thhis forum.

Does anyone know whether there's any mandatory and/or currently-in-use on-board safety equipment in North American locomotives and for how long it's been in place? Here we've been having ASFA (Spanish acronym for "Automatic Braking and [On-Board] Signal Announcement") since 1975, but can't find anything at all on the net on American equipment! Also, we have another safety device, the so-called "Dead Man" that triggers an emergency should you fail to respond by pressing a pedal to randomly generated visual and acoustic signals that take place every 20 to 30 seconds (to prevent a sudden death or passing out of the driver to cause a runaway).

Cheers to all from Spain's capital, Y.
