If you were head of Regional Bus Ops.

East New York

Recommended Posts

It is now official! This is the begining of a very interesting time in history. I can't be more happy because all 3 brands are here to stay. This is what I would do.

Official Name and title: (MTA) Surface Transit Operating Authority: To oversee all MTA Regional Bus Operations.

Facilities of all agencies will be shared to increase productivity. Major operations would be divided into certain areas.

NYCTA

East New York Depot would become (MTA) Surface Transit Headquarters for Regional Bus, and not just NYCT.

Build a new Jamaica Depot that would be Surface Transit Command & Communications Center for all of MTA in case of emergencies.

New Charleston Depot would become SI Division HQ, and Casleton Depot to be re-built

MaBSTOA

When the 126 St Depot is rebuit, it should be transfered to MaBSTOA.

Bx12 Select Bus would be renamed Bx12E (Express)

Brand New DE60LFR Artics to GH, KB, and MJQ Depots

MTA Bus

Spring Creek Depot to be transfered to NYCTA, Flatbush Depot runs B100 on Sunday

College Point Depot would remain Bus Division HQ

LI Bus

Norman J. Levy Transit Facility would become LIB Division HQ

What would you do?

What i would do is....

1]Keep the paint schmes the same. Except for MTA bus which would have their buses restored to their PBL paint scheme.

2]Express bus routes from long island to mantthan. To resduce traffic on the LIE and other highways and the fare would be 5:00$

3] Somehow take over the bee line bus system. And make local routes from the bronx to new rochlle and stamford CT. And other places in westchester and CT the fare would be 3:00$

4]GOH all those buses in eastchester depot and put them back into service.

5]Hybrids and low floor buses would be BANNED

6]The buses that would be doing local servce would the. RTSs Orion V flexibles bought from NJ transit GM fishbowls buses.

7]The buses that would be doing express bus service. The MCI classics Vikings Orion Vs with express bus seats and RTSs with express seats. Like the ones from umler park.

8]The BX12 would be turned into an light rail route.

9]The artics would be scrapped and replaced with MCI classic artics and fishbowl artics.

Yeah, I forgot I wanted the ex-private lines colors back. But I would be okay with 10 buses from each depot in the old colors, with an (MTA) logo where the depot sticker would be.

I would take over Bee-Line eventually, but would not even consider it untill late 2009. I would call it (MTA) Liberty Lines, and keep the Bee-Line name and logo. Bee-Line is the only TA in the MTA region that has an '08 Orion V on the roster, and I'm sure it will be the last.

1.Take all the hybrids out of SC...send them some were else

2.RTS CNG come back at SC for the local and express route(MCI Classic too)

3.repower the CAT D4500 buses to 6v92 or D 60 with jake brake

4.send some LIB Orion V cng L10 buses to SC and CP

Wow this is excellent thread with some interesting ideas :D

1)I would change the Paint scheme in general. Take a look at PA Transit and how their buses have different paint schemes, I would like to do something like that. Also, this would be interesting from a transit buff standpoint to paint some of the modern buses in old paint schemes. I recall seeing renderings a long time ago on bus chat but I think this would be a good idea.

2) As mentioned before, I would try to take over Bee Line and maybe even Suffolk Transit (Keep in mind I don't know too much about these companies but if its in NY it should be (MTA)). Think about it Bee Line can be (MTA) Westchester Division while Suffolk Transit can be Suffolk Division

3) Find a new replacement for Jamaica Depot fast. I have passed by the depot numerous times and it doesn't look too good besides the space looks small.

4) Buy more buses, this may not be a favorite but it has to be done. Any old buses will be subject to review for preservation for the NYTM (as long as it is requested). To help the process of buying a bus I would get a demo and test the bus in our areas for at least 30-60 days. From there we can make our decisions. We also need to buy more artics since the current artics are getting old and we do need artics everywhere else.

5) Any local buses that have suburban seating and are not of old age should be replaced with local seating arrangements.

6) I think that also it would be beneficial to give older buses a GOH rather than paying to scrap them when they might be able to give you a few more years.

7) All current depots should be subject to inspections to see if they need to be rehabbed or modified in some way. Also, explore more areas to build new depots for the expanding fleet.

8) Pretty much the same ideas as ENY's first post.

I can't think of anything else but if I do I'll post them later.

I like your idea of Westchester Division but suffolk should be grouped with Nassau to Make one Division which would be Long Island Division

I don't have too many ideas, but I like Bx12X better than Bx12E. I've seen X used for express more than E in the past, even though that's the letter the word starts with.

I was thinking Bx12X at first, but it sounds kind of funny to me.

Great ideas. Yeah I wish Detroit Diesel still made transit engines, then we wouldn't have that problem, although I do like the sound of the CAT on the MCI.

Great ideas here too! I'm also tired of the blue and white stripe, but I do want it to stay on the NYCT Buses. And yes something needs to be done about Jamaica Depot ASAP. I also agree that we need to test demo buses a little longer than we do.

I would call it (MTA) Westchester Bus

I was thinking that at first, but I want the Bee logo to stay, even if they put MTA somewhere. Remember the hybrid paint scemes the PBL buses had when MTA first took over?

Heres what I would do:

1)Repaint all buses into the two tone blue paint scheme.

2)Cancel the Orion VII NG order and get Orion V's and RTS Ledgend's instead.

3)Move around bus routes between the depots ex:B100 to Flatbush or B13 to Spring Creek.

4)All low floors would be put on lower capacity routes.

5)Older buses would be overhauled and put back into service.

6)Nabi 436 Artics would be purchased and placed on busy routes in all 5 boroughs.

7)Service will be added on all routes making the maximum wait time between buses 10 minutes.

These are just some of many changes that I would make.

1) Institute BRT systems on Grand Concourse, White Plains Road, Webster Avenue, 2nd Avenue (Manhattan), Flatbush Avenue, Main Street (Queens), Northern Blvd, Hillside Avenue, Jamaica Avenue, Hylan Blvd, Victory Blvd., and Merrick Blvd.

BRT systems would extend as far east as Hicksville and as far north as White Plains via Hillside Avenue / Jericho Turnpike / Old Country Road (the Q43, N22, N24 routes in Queens/L.I.) and Grand Concourse / Jerome / Cross County (The Bx 1/2 and the W20/W21 routes in the Bronx, and Westchester).

The NABI bus would ideal for BRT.

2) Bring in Double Decker Buses into Manhattan Routes, and reconfigure MJQ depot to handle them or create a new one that can. They can supposedly handle more people safely than the articulated buses, and most routes don't go under tunnels so they would be feasible for routes like the Bx15, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M10/20, M104, M14, M23, and M34.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDGZVD0EM5w

3) New Flyer Articulated buses on the busiest corridors in the outer boroughs not getting BRT. Articulated buses in Staten Island in general (they can handle thin roads).

4) Routes that do not have artics/double decker buses would be as follows.

Orion V buses in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn,

Orion VII buses in Queens, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester

5) Takeover of Suffolk Transit and Westchester Bee Line Buses.

6) Changes to Bronx Routes:

  • Bx33 replaced by Bx 17 and Bx32; Bx 17 runs to Harlem, Bx32 runs to Port Morris.
  • Bx55 consolidated into Bx15; Buses from Harlem makes limited stops; local buses run 138th street to Gun Hill Road
  • Bx27 and Bx35 consolidated
  • Bx4 runs to Co-Op City
  • Bx9 runs to Getty Square.

7) Express buses from Babylon, Hicksville, Hempstead, Freeport, and Great Neck to Manhattan.

8) Have one or two routes running via the GWB into New Jersey and a North Shore Bus line to Bayonne, New Jersey. Also routes that run via the South Bronx to Jamaica (via Astoria)

Those are some good ideas. I think as far as ordering buses I would go this way.

40fters: Orion VII NG Hybrid, Orion VII NG CNG, RTS Legends, & RTS E Low Floors

45fters: MCI D4500H Hybrid

60fters: NFI DE60LFR, NABI 436, Orion VIII (Citaro)

i would......

1. Cancel low-capcity routes and replace those lines by extending other nearby lines

2.provide more limited service

3.purchase more Orion NG and Citaro

4.overhaul the old RTS and Orion

Well we will get the Citaro eventually, but it will be in the form of the Orion X.

As head of MTA regional bus ops, I would:

1) Cut the Orion VII NG order to 100 buses, #3800 to 3899, for local bus service on short/low capacity routes.

2) Put out a contest for the best new transit bus, with the following features required: standard floor, body size 46.5ft by 9ft by 9ft, hybrid drivetrain using a gas turbine engine to generate electric power for batteries on the roof. The batteries would supply power to four motors, one to a wheel, which would poer the bus. Wheelchair lifts: 1 at each of the two doors. The winner would receive a 1000-bus contract, with the new buses numbered #3900-4899.

3) Additional SBS corridors would be created along Grand Concourse, White Plains Road, Webster Avenue, 2nd Avenue (Manhattan) Broadway, Flatbush Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, Main Street (Queens), Northern Blvd, Hillside Avenue, Jamaica Avenue, Hylan Blvd, Victory Blvd., and Merrick Blvd.

4)The M98 would become a full-time limited route, operating from Target/225 St in the Bronx to Smith / Fulton Sts in Downtown Brooklyn along Broadway in the from 225 St to 178 St, the Harlem RIver Dr from 178 St to 125 St, and Lexington Ave / 3 Ave / Bowery from 125 St to the Manhattan Bridge.

5) The X25 and X90 would become full-time routes and be redesignated as the M25 and M90.

6) Similar (mostly) intraborough express service would be created in Staten Island as the S27 from Newark Airport (local in NJ, operates along Western Av / Richmond Terrace / Morningstar Rd in the north, the W Shore Expwy to Arden Rd, and then Arden Rd / Amboy Rd to Tottenville.

7) The Q53 would be restored to its Triboro COach service pattern and extended to Queens PLaza in the west, making Limited stops on Queens Bl and Roosevelt Ave.

8) The B6 would be extended to JFK Airport via Linden Bl, and Limited stops would be added all the way to the western end of the route.

9)Regular local fares would apply to this new route class, and the B103 would also be included in said route class.

10)Order 500 2008 Orion Vs, #1300-1799, all with suburban seats, to operate on intraborough express lines.

11)Order 700 Citaro Gs, #7900-8399 with suburban seats to serve on the SBS lines and #8400-8599 with transit seats to serve on other high-capacity lines.

12) Create new express bus lines through Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties as well as New Jersey.

13) Order 500 MCI D4500H hybrid coaches #2300-2799, to serve on the new express lines.

1. Disagree. NG look nice but Orion V still better.

2. Maybe I don't think we need a thousand buses but 400 or 300 would be good.

3. Agree. 'Cause though (MTA) might not have enough money to make SBS routes they can buy red paint.

4. Agree

5. Agree

6. Agree

7. Agree

8. Agree

9. Agree

12. Disagree-not neccesary

13. Disagree-we don't need those.....
