Assuming the tracks are closed off, and it's not a case of simply bypassing 34 Street...

(1) - 242 Street to 96 Street*

(2) - 241 Street to Times Square; 14 Street to Flatbush Av*

(3) - suspended

(4) - extended to New Lots Av, Eastern Pkwy local

(5) - extended to Flatbush Av

(B) - suspended

(D) - 205 Street to 42 Street; W 4 Street to Stillwell Av

(F) - via 8th Avenue or Crosstown

(N) - Ditmars Blvd to Times Square; Whitehall St to Stillwell Av

(Q) - Atlantic Av to Stillwell Av

(R) - via 63rd Street/6th Avenue

(W) - suspended

*Yes, I'm aware the local stops on 7th Avenue are not served by anything. If trains can pull into 34 St-Penn Station, that would allow (1) trains to run down there as locals.

What if the (C) had service to Lefferts Blvd?

Using the current time schedules of the Far Rock (A), peak service Rock Pk (A), (C), (S) btn Broad Channel & Rock Park, set up a peak service (A) to/from Lefferts with the Lefferts  (C) so those folks along Liberty Ave can't complain about not having a one seat ride.

Here's little bit of help: the first (C) from Manhattan arrives at Euclid Ave at 624AM. Would this be the first (C) to Lefferts? The first (C) from Euclid leaves at 557AM. Your trains can come from Linden Yard, 174th St or 207.

I realize this is a tough challenge. It will take patience and schedule coordinating skil. For encouragement, I tried doing this about a month ago just for fun. It was tough! Yet I'm sure many of you know more than I do. Can you get it done?

What if Lex Ave/59th st/63rd st shutdown for (4)(5)(6)<6>(F)(N)(Q)(R) & (W).

Here goes:

(4) and (6) both run from their Bronx terminals to 86th Street-Lexington Avenue and terminate on their respective levels.

(4) also (separately) runs local from Grand Central to Brooklyn Bridge and then via normal route

(5) runs via the 7th Avenue line from 149th Street-Nevins Avenue

(select (5) trains operate between Flatbush Avenue and Grand Central)

(E) runs local in Queens.

(F) runs via 53rd Street after 47th-50th Street, stopping at Queens Plaza, then running normal route BUT as a local in Queens.

Special shuttle train operates on the QB express tracks between Roosevelt Island and 71st-Continental.  Also special OOS transfers between Roosevelt Island Subway Station and Tramway and 53rd Street-Lexington Avenue (E) station.

(M) runs to 57th Street-6th Avenue (replacing the (F) there), where it terminates

(N) and (Q) both run local via the tunnel and on Broadway, terminating at EITHER Times Square OR 57th Street-7th Avenue (terminating trains at Times Square end on the express track and start their return trips there)

(N) also runs in Queens between Queensboro Plaza and Ditmars Boulevard (special OOS transfers between Queensboro Plaza and Queens Plaza AND ALSO between 39th Avenue and 36th Street).

(R) runs between 95th Street and Whitehall Street with LIMITED service to Times Square or 57th Street-7th Avenue.

(W) is suspended.

Special shuttle buses operate as follows:

Between 57th Street-7th Avenue and 96th Street/2nd Avenue (passengers can also use the M31 bus, which for this instance is extended to 96th Street/2nd Avenue)

Between 57th Street-6th Avenue and 21st Street-Queensbridge Plaza, also stopping at Queensboro Plaza and Queens Plaza.

(Both shuttle buses stop at 60th and 63rd Streets on 3rd Avenue before going to their respective locations in both directions with buses to 57th Street also stopping at 63rd and Lexington Avenue).

Why would both (A) Peak & (C) Fulltime operate from Lefferts Blvd around same time?

In the past when the (C) ran to Lefferts replacing the  (A) you could hear the screams from Woodhaven to Ozone Park about not having a one seat ride to Manhattan in the morning.

I realize Transit would probably never implement what I'm proposing. It's just a what if scenario to test your scheduling skills; something different than the apocalyptic 'what ifs' that regularly show up here. Call it a what if for grownups. Instead of terrorist attacks or nature's tragedies tearing s#it down, how about one proposal that really makes you use your brain? Ain't no fun in that though. It's asking too much.

A major fire has damaged the 14 St tunes and a major car accident has taken place on the Willy, causing both to be unusable for a month.

What do you do?

Interesting, because this isolates the entire Eastern Division with very limited exceptions:

First, the obvious:

(J) runs between Jamaica Center and Marcy Avenue (no skip-stop)

(L) operates in two sections:

Manhattan: 1st-8th Avenues (single-tracked east of Union Square) with whatever trains were in Manhattan when the fire broke.

Brooklyn: Lorimer Street and Canarsie (some trains begin and end at Bedford Avenue).

(M) runs as a shuttle between Metropolitan Avenue and Myrtle Avenue (select trains to Marcy Avenue)

Then:

(Z) temporarily becomes its own line, operating between Broad and Essex Street in Manhattan.  If warranted, service can be extended to Atlantic-Barclays or points further south as needed.

For Manhattan service, whatever cars were in Manhattan at the time of the shutdown are used.

(G) trains are doubled in length, there is an OOS transfer between the (G) and (J) at Broadway and between the (G) at Fulton Street and (2)(3)(4)(5)(B)(D)(N)(Q) and (R) at Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center.  Passengers from the Canarsie and Broadway-Brooklyn lines are asked to if at all possible go to Atlantic-Barclays to avoid inevitable overcrowding at Court Square.

(G) is also extended weekdays only to 71st-Continental to replace the (M) on Queens Boulevard.  Late nights and weekends, (G) is extended to Queens Plaza.  There is a special OOS transfer between Queens Plaza and Queensboro Plaza.
