Northbound (N) , (R) and (W) trains are running express from Canal St to 34 St-Herald Sqbecause of an unruly passenger at Canal St.

How does that work? The affected segment of the line is south of the junction where the trains “choose” the express or local tracks.

You're right, that's super wierd. But I think there's a switch between Canal and City hall for the (R)(W) to go onto the center tracks.

If that’s the case though can’t they switch back after canal?

Also there have been Incidents at Canal and this required trains to be rerouted over bridge so I’m not sure what happened here

That must be a mistake, and the incident is at Prince St., at least, If it were at Canal on the local, that would block everything coming from the tunnel and Whitehall. The (R) would be routed over the bridge, and then switch back to the local after Canal .
The switches between City Hall and Canal lead to the dead end tracks in the center of Canal.
If the incident was Canal on the bridge tracks, that would just affect the bridge traffic and send the (N) and (Q) through the tunnel, and the (Q) would cross back tot he express after Canal.

Some southbound (N) and (Q) trains are stopping along the (R) line from Canal St to DeKalb Av because of track inspection between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 96 St.

Expect delays in (N) , (Q) and (R) train service.

EDIT: There shall be no Myrtle Avenue through service!!

There is no (J) train service between Essex St and Broadway Junction in both directions.

There is no (M) train service between Essex and Middle Village-Metropolitan Av in both directions.

These service changes are because of switch problems at Myrtle Av.

Some southbound (2) trains are stopping along the (5) line from 149 St-Grand Concourse to Nevins St because of track maintenance.

We're working to address water on the tracks at 145 St that caused earlier delays.

Expect delays in (2) , (3) , (4) and (5) train service.

Some northbound (N) trains will end at Times Sq-42 St.

Some northbound (W) trains are stopping along the (Q) line from 57 St-7 Av and end at 96 St.

Expect delays in (N) , (Q) , (R) and (W) train service in both directions.

These service changes are because of signal problems at 39 Av.

Why does a signal problem on the Astoria line temporarily terminate astoria service but Far Rockaway isn't as unlucky as Astoria?

It depends on the severity of the issue. This one is clearly a big problem, as I was caught up in the delays due to this around 6pm; it's now 8:30 and trains still aren't operating normally. Unfortunately, the MTA says "signal problems" to mean just about anything, without regard for the severity or type of issue, nor do they give estimates of when service will be back up and running (as some other transit agencies do), so the riding public is largely left in the dark about what exactly is taking place.

A signal problem at 39th Ave probably takes out the switches leading to/from G3/4, making it impossible to run any service to Astoria. A signal problem in Far Rockaway may take out part of the terminal interlocking, but given the line's lower frequency and the fact that you can run terminals with only a single track functioning, such an issue is less impactful.

So no trains were going to Astoria ? They didn’t clearly writt that.

Some southbound (1) and (2) trains end at Rector St because of switch problems at South Ferry.

Expect delays in both directions.

Travel Alternative, passengers can take nearby (N)(R) train service stopping at nearby (1) stations.

Are they using the loop still for turning around if needed?

(F) via Crosstown, via 53 Street, and via 8 Avenue… with clueless passengers waiting for a 6 Avenue (F) And (M) that will never come

(D) via 6 Avenue local (presumably to cover for the loss of 6 Avenue service from the (F) and (M))

(E) to 2 Avenue (for reasons unknown)

(M) via 8 Avenue ← late Christmas bonus for Wally

Most of this is (unsurprisingly) not acknowledged on mta.info! The last bit of information I saw mentioned a problem at 57 Street. That was when the (E) train I was on just made it to Queens Plaza.

Trains were going through. I took one to Ditmars from 577 around 6:20 pm. We held for a minute at QBP and then proceeded, which leads me to believe they perhaps had an absolute block set up between QBP and 39? That would limit capacity enough to divert some trains.

I didn't feel the train stop to perform a key-by move, though the issue could have been on the southbound tracks, which would still limit capacity.

(For those who may not know, Absolute block is a very-low-tech method of train control that can be used in the event of automatic signal failure. If you put TSS with walkie talkies on the platforms at 39 and QBP - you can have them communicate like "Okay, operating motor 1234 is headed from QBP to 39" and then the other guy, when he sees it leave 39 says "Operating motor 1234 clear of 39". Now the TSS at QBP knows he can send the next train, because he's confirmed that the last train he sent is clear of the next station and thus the tracks between them are clear

After Sandy some of these were set up for a while - on the G line you had one in the newton creek tubes. There were TSS's at 21 and Greenpoint and phones installed.

There was one in the south ferry loop, where being a loop, they used a baton. Stick a baton on the side of the column in the middle, T/O grabs the baton, goes around the loop, puts it back. No baton, sit and wait. Keeps one train in the loop at a time. )

(D) trains are stopping along the (N) line from Coney Island-Stillwell Av to 36 St (Bklyn) in both directions because of a temporary loss of power between 55 St and 71 St.

Expect delays in (D) and (N) train service in both directions.

As an alternative, customers are advised to use the B4, B6, B8, B35, B37 or B64 bus service.

If anything, that will make service better. Keep trains at similar headway on the same track right up until the terminal. If that switch between the (D)’s terminal tracks and the (N)’s terminal tracks is well-managed, only the (D)s and some outbound (N)s should see slight delays.

Some northbound (N) and (W) trains are stopping along the  line from 57 St-7 Av to 96 St.

Some northbound (N) trains will end at Times Sq-42 St.

There is (N) train shuttle service between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza in both directions.

Some northbound (N) trains are stopping along the (B) line from DeKalb Av to 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr then via the (F) line to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.

Northbound (R) trains are stopping along the (Q) line from 57 St-7 Av to Lexington Av-63 St then via the (F) line to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.

These service changes are because of a train with mechanical problems Lexington Av-59 St.

Expect delays in (N) (Q)(R) and (W) train service.

I still don’t understand what happened yesterday morning I wasn’t there but it Seems an (R) was stalled due to some signal problem.I still think it’s not fair for customers to have to sit on a train due to signal problems can’t the train have left and they could have taken care of the problem later.Am I missing something?

That connection and 96 Street terminal is much more useful than people will give it credit for. Imagine if this had happened pre-SAS.

Some (R) trains are stopping along the (Q) line in both directions from Canal St to DeKalb Av.

Expect delays in (N) , (Q), (R) and (W) train service.

These service changes are because of signal problems at Whitehall St-South Ferry.

Passengers at bypassed (R) stations in lower Manhattan may request a block ticket from station agents to re-enter the system for service on nearby lines.
