-The other one is when MTA employees report something rare is running around and fans brush it off as not important. Going as far as stating it's happened before. It may have happened before, but you're not going to see 50 year old trains running around for a long time. Take every opportunity you get, because once it's gone, it's gone for good.

Yeah well I'm done reporting anything here. When I reported an R32 set on the (A) , I actually got insulted in return. And then when I confirmed that the R32 (R) was running yesterday (even after a false report that it had been cancelled - which now I bet was purposely leaked to try to keep some of the nuttier foamers at bay).....well, you saw what happened as a result. All I asked was for everyone who came out to BE RESPECTFUL of the crew and other riders, but that was too much to handle? So, you won't be getting any more inside information from me anymore. I might take a photo the next time I get an R160 on the (D) but not until AFTER it's been yarded.

Why are people (transit fans at that) allowing what happened yesterday on the (R) become a defining factor for fans in general? It's absurd.

It happens way too often. Thats the problem.

One incident, fine. But every time there is a change in assignment people come in wilding. Its annoying. There is something called being civilized. Like I was telling you, a decade ago it was never like this. So yeah I'm annoyed very much so. Time and time again. Tired of it.

Fair enough, you have a point.

Hoping it'll eventually pass though.

It's not a defining factor for fans. The problem is that these people who act like animals are by far the most vocal of the sub groups within this hobby, and therefore it reflects badly on the community as a whole in the minds of whoever they encounter.

Suppose you knew nothing about the sports fan community (unlikely, but still) and you found yourself in one of those riot things, being exposed to the community for the first time. What are the chances of your judgement on the situation being "Oh, it's just a few badly behaved people, doesn't mean everyone's like that", compared to "What a bunch of animals!" Is it right? No, but sometimes, people let their initial impressions of someone from a particular group influence their judgement on the group collectively. What if it was an operator, conductor, or station agent (I think that's a thing??? Feel free to correct me) or cleaner who has never seen a railfan before, and his first exposure to the hobby was through these clowns? Next time they see a railfan, they might assume they're just as bad, and then create problems (under the misguided pretense that they are just ridding the system of a nuisance) for someone who is, in reality, a well behaved individual practicing his hobby in a non-inconvenient way.

On the flip side, though, people who throw around the word "foamer" constantly are no better. Just because the most prominent of the fans at one of these events is one of the aforementioned clowns, doesn't automatically mean 100% of the fans at the events are, and there's no reasonable grounds for labelling someone a foamer PURELY on the basis that they decided to go out and ride the train, any other potential behaviors unaccounted for. It is unbelievably sanctimonious, like labelling all atheists as intolerant a**holes, or labelling all religious people as prats who go around and shove their religion down the throats of everyone they see.

Just my $2.50.

You didn't know that's the new thing these days. Like how everyone thinks bikers are criminals and a**holes after that whole Range Rover incident.

You can thank the mass media for that such as the daily news. They are infamous for reporting in a biased slant perpetrating stereotypes in so many ways I lost count at this point.

I personally can't blame you for not wanting to report anything anymore. I also respect your decision to do that.

You have to understand a number of things, Turbo. The (R) fallout wasn't the only negative thing to happen involving transit fans. There has been confrontations at Busfest, the holiday train, we've had users on this site and outside of this site getting bullied and disrespected for no reason, and so forth. All of that bullshit was insane and is getting ridiculous.

The incident from Saturday was a major turning point, because it showed how out of control some fans really are. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. They got the attention of the entire MTA (and quite possibly other transit systems in the US). The SOB that rode on the outside of train, also caused the train to be delayed.

While I'm not upset anymore, that's still frustrating kids are acting like that on a public system. I've been at the Amtrak station in downtown and the children there, who I might add are mostly preschool and elementary school kids were much well behaved compared to some of the fans on the (R) on Saturday.

I personally don't want transit systems looking down on me or any other fan in America as immature kids. The transit community is a damn team for Christ sakes and it needs to start acting like it. This team is so divided, it's no longer even a joke anymore. This is real folks. My $2.50 on this subject.

I'm sorry to hear you feel this way and I dont blame you in the least. Personally speaking I appreciate your input as one of the RTO specialists on this board. You know its really the transit workers that creates the foundation on this board. The input of yourself and others as to instruct and educate us as transit enthusiasts is appreciated by many. As for the others who insulted you in the past don't let it get to you. I don't.

The real problem is some of the immature ones. As far as members on this site, the people who participated in the hunting down of the R32 (R) I know personally as well, offline in person, they are good guys, really.. so its not us, unless theres something I missed while on vacation.  As for some (SOME not all) of the guys on facebook who do not participate in discussion here, instead causing trouble with the internet harrassment and threatening, unruly delinquent behavior and such, different story, they better know their role, quickly. I have no shame whatsoever in saying that and they better be reading this as a warning...

But generally I understand how you feel. Easier said then done but don't let it get to you. If some want to diss, put them in their place. They need to know what it means to respect transit workers and listen, and LEARN instead of acting like armchair MTA Executive Committee Board members and wannabe gangstas, challenging the TA workers and the veteran enthusiasts, which to me is laughable.

You have my support and many others here I am sure feel the same way.

Absolutely. There are standards of decency that should be adhered to by everyone. However those that adhere to the standards should not bring themselves down. I'm seeing as of recently many choosing to jump ship from the fanning and related activities, and some even blaming themselves and each other. Not the best thing and certainly not the right thing.

While that may be all true there is no reason for what's happening. If anything model citizens should lead by example, as most have been doing already. Under the logic that action speak louder than words continuing to show an exemplary demeanor is the best thing anyy transit fan can do right now considering the circumstances.

Since you bring it up I'll touch on that from my view. I do use the term on occasion, usually in jest within my social circles of transit fans, and as such I don't see it as an insult or as any other form of antagonizing. However to say that people don't get hurt psychologically or other wise would be a fallacious statement, and as of late I've opened my eyes to that. That said I would hope people are mindful and not let a word get to them.

You didn't know that's the new thing these days. Like how everyone thinks bikers are criminals and a**holes after that whole Range Rover incident.

It happens I suppose. i guess it's all based on personal opinion and bias like all else. The bias of this community has me questioning though, even more now.

Understood. The last thing anyone wants is to have negative labels attached to their hobby and themselves. More than fair. Like I said though at the very least begin by leading by example. One of the easiest things anyone can do right now. Another could be ending the unnecessary drama online and offline that can affect fellow fans for the worse. That in itself is a subject of interest that I am interested in and will cover soon.

Typing on a phone so I'll make it quick.

You know, 12 hours ago I would not have been able to really understand where you're coming from, but after seeing the fiasco that happened last night, I have a new understanding and respect for what you're saying.

Moving away from the topic..

-People who sit next to you on the bus and don't take off their school bags, then sit sideways and hit you with it.

-The weather in the Toronto area. 12 hours ago the sun was shining and it was really warm... now its snowing.

-phone keyboards. I'll never understand how people can throw together messages quickly. Typing this message was one of the worst things I've ever had to do.

I got one: People who rant and rave like crybabies and sociopaths over non issues. I've learned as of recently that sometimes the best thing to do is ignore them. As the saying goes silence speaks louder than words. It actually works.

You know, keyboard warriors and such.

-The words/phrases: YOLO, selfie, swag, "your mom", "your face", "that's what she said".

-And twerking.

I can sympathize with most of them.

But do you know how many valuable discussions have spawned from a simple "that's what she said"? In this forum alone hundreds. Don't underestimate the power of a simple phrase.

What's wrong with this?

The same thing that's wrong with the other two phrases: it's incredibly infantile and immature. Maybe it's just me, but I don't find the concept of holding a conversation with someone who feels compelled to find a sexual innuendo in every sentence I say particularly appealing.
