Guira1283 Posted February 19, 2014 #1 Posted February 19, 2014 Queens is next for this expansion, its about time http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/19/5425928/new-york-city-2014-subway-wi-fi-expansion
Cait Sith Posted February 19, 2014 #2 Posted February 19, 2014 It would be kind of redundant for them to add cell phone service at Jamaica-Van Wyck seeing as it already has cell service, but not wi-fi.
SevenEleven Posted February 19, 2014 #3 Posted February 19, 2014 Installations at Elmhurst Ave and Roosevelt Ave are already underway. The Herald Square and Bryant Park stations were activated not too long ago. Definitely is about time.
ScreechyFlange Posted February 20, 2014 #4 Posted February 20, 2014 IMO they should retrofit all Ntt's A and B division to be WiFi comparable. It doesn't make much sense to do it in the stations when you'd lose your signal after your train enters the tunnel, or if your talking on the phone you'd have a hard time hearing with trains from other directions entering and leaving the station.
QM1to6Ave Posted February 20, 2014 #5 Posted February 20, 2014 I didn't see a list of the stations in the article...anyone have that list?

The MTA is looking to provide continuous service in the tunnels (basically what you're asking for) when they get the service up systemwide.
MichalkaManiac Posted February 21, 2014 #7 Posted February 21, 2014 I don't know if it was just where I was at on the tracks, when I tried WiFi with my iPad at Times Sq, I didn't get any internet service. Note that I was at the very front of the train before the doors closed and departed. Wonder if that may had something to do with it...

The Boingo wi-fi is essentially useless anyways, since it's ridiculously slow and you need to re-login every time you enter a new Boingo service area. Better to just use the 4G infrastructure.
Missabassie Posted February 21, 2014 #9 Posted February 21, 2014 I hardly see the point in this anyway... They're always talking about thieves n shit and not to display cell phones or other electronic devices, yet they wanna hook up wifey where we can barely use it any gohdamn way....

Better to just use the 4G infrastructure. Basically. Boingo is slow, then you have to answer a survey or watch a video ad whenever you connect to a new wifi point (like a new station or other side of the station) I hardly see the point in this anyway... LOL have you been on a train lately? Virtually everyone is on an electronic device.

I love the irony--I was listening to one of the Transit Trax MTA podcasts and they had 2 different podcasts in a row. The first was with a transit cop telling people to hide their electronics, and the second was talking about how great the new WiFi is.
