F Train Magically Becomes G Train Without Warning, Infuriating Everyone

Straphangers were plunged into utter confusion and despair this morning when an F train suddenly morphed into a G train without warning. According to various people who were on the train at the time, the unannounced switch happened around 9:15 a.m. Friday morning while in Brooklyn. And apparently, even the motorman didn't know what was going on!

No way the T/O had to know what was going on! That journalist is wrong, nonsense! How could the T/O not get communication from the T/D that he was going to run over the (G) ? Please!

Confirmed in an MTA quote at the bottom of the page:

As a result of signal trouble earlier today, we had to reroute some northbound “M” service via the “F” line from 47/50th to Roosevelt Avenue. To help alleviate congestion, we also rerouted three northbound “F” trains via the “G” line from Bergen Street, as they sometimes are. For each reroute, we advised the crews of the change to service via the radio, they acknowledged and announcements were made both on board the trains and in the stations, over the public address system, but we’ve heard reports that at least one train did not announce the change. We will investigate further.

Entire crew can see the leaving end homeball at that station. If a Conductor works that line enough he'd know what lineup to expect there, too. The TO probably wasn't paying attention and just took the lineup and the CR played along or the TO expected the CR to make proper announcements so didn't make them himself... either way someone passed up on their responsibility.

My (F) got rerouted up Crosstown a couple weekends ago. I can clearly see that bottom green from my position so I knew what was about to happen before Jay St Tower even gave us the call. 534, "ladies and gentlemen, for service to Manhattan take this train to Hoyt St and take the shuttle bus to Jay for the (A) .... or just stand here on the platform looking confused and wait for the next one" . Props to the one woman who was going to Roosevelt Ave for LGA who knew to stay on the whole time.

That next one only made it as far as W4, btw.

Had a similar occurrence with the (4) a few weeks back. Ran express between 59th and 42nd then still signed up as express with no announcements became local between 42nd and 14th. At 14th an announcement was made that it was going local along the (6). Then the C/D said it was express. It was local. Maaaaaan.
