R32 Fleet Swap Discussion Thread

That's a write-up if you get caught with an open door by a TSS who's a stickler, so I don't think that's much of a point. T/Os definitely dislike the cabs, but not because kids are standing by the window.

I've heard that it's particularly undesirable in the winter when the radiator has a tendency to get so hot that you can easily get burned. Ouch.

So based on the recent discussion, have they gone ahead and pooled the (A) and (C) fleet? (the R160As notwithstanding of course)

It does seem like the amounts of R46s and R32s on each line fluctuates daily...

Not sure, but it may be likely from my usage. I'd imagine if so, then it's only temporary and might not continue once R179's arrive on the (A) (especially since the (C) is projected to be just R46's once all NTT's and R32's leave the line, at least to my knowledge).

9946-9943/9959-9962 is back on the (J). My friend saw it in service about a hour ago.

So from what your saying, they're traveling in three R32 pairs (or six cars)?

If that's not the case, then what six-car units are you talking about?

I heard from an (A) line T/O that the R32’s are not going to Coney Island and that the (A) will have all 222 R32’s assigned to Pitkin/207th respectively until retirement. The R42’s on the other hand will make their way to Coney Island as spares, or rush hour put ins.

I think the (A) line crews and dispatchers hate the R32s for their older age, their half-width cabs, and those who tend to hog the RFW which leaves the T/Os unable to open their cabs wide open for their whole pick. It's why they tend not to have as many R32s on the line and is why to this very day, they still have around 5 sets of R32s on the (C). The R32s' blind faces also don't feature seats for C/Rs to sit down either. It's also why the (C) and (J) swap occurred in the summers of 2013 and 2014 before officially becoming permanent from the summer of 2015 onwards.

I do not think the (A) line crews and dispatchers care much about the R46s' lesser amount of doors causing longer boarding and dwelling times, because even if the (A) was half 60 footers, mostly 60 footers, or all 60 footers, it probably won't reduce much of the delays and bunching since ridership keeps on increasing as time passes, the (MTA) still has not decided to remove the numerous timers along the line, and keep the South Channel Drawbridge closed for the entire rush hour frame.

I know I'm talking too much here and overthinking here. I'm just saying that when it comes to the longest line in the system like the (A), it's fairly understandable why the line can't be perfect in terms of time performance and even speed too. Blame the timers and the aging signalling system (and to a lesser extent the passengers) for that. So whether the (A) has 60 footers, newer cars, overall better equipment or whatever, the (A) will always still fairly have problems along its route.

I'm telling you...the answer as to why a handful of R32s are still on the (C) is fairly obvious. What could we do?

Of course though, as you see my posts in the R179 Thread, I have no problem with trying to get as many 60 footers on the (A) as fast as possible.

I'm a A line operator and yes this is all true. WE ALL HATE THE 32'S except for the few who like them just because they're massive annoying buffs and are still living in the past.
MOST.OF.US.CREWS.ON.THE.A.HATE.THE.32 especially when going local for 2 whole trips. For the operator the cab seats are uncomfortable after a while, & your hand (left) and arms start bothering you too. Yes you can stand but who wants to be standing for 2 hours.
For the conductor, they have to stand the entire way because there is no seat in the #2 end where they operate from in a 10 car set, plus we could give 2 fks about more doors, "rail fan winders" "nostalgia" and whatever else comes with a 32.
Plus us operating crews cannot communicate with each other privately while on the road.
Certain good dispatchers try to get rid of the 32's when rush hour is over and lay them up. Yes, even the dispatchers don't like the 32's
As far as operating with the cab door open the entire trip, some do it just to get fresh cool a/c that never reaches the cab for some reason, but as far as supervision is concerned, some do "frown" on that activity.

My questions is, even though I'm hearing bad things about the 179, WHEN THE FK are they coming to the A? The longest line in the system.

All 5-car R179’s should arrive sometime in early 2019 (just before Canarsie shutdown), when all trains should be delivered and either testing or running on the line.

Not as a single pair but often times transfers are conducted as 4 or 6 car sets.  Drop 2 where intended and return with the rest.

I haven't yet come across anything to suggest other R-32 transfers have been made between ENY and 207, but will keep watching.

Given the nominal nature of R-160 transfers, the 9900's shown are probably back at ENY as part of a larger group.

Half the R32 fleet is staying on the A with the R179's.  The A is loosing R46's to the C

I wonder in the future: would it be possible for both the (A)(C) to run 1/2 R46s and R32s since they rotate units btwn 207 and Pitkin (if all the R160As are off the (C) for now in swap for the remaining R32/42 at ENY)

That's a possibility, i bet the (C) will use some of those 10 car R179's as well.

I don’t see why not. *plot twist* R179’s on the (C) with 10-car R32’s. (A) line: all R46...

Just got an R-32 fleet Update.  As of September 7, there were only 34 left at ENY; 188 at 207 Street.  Three trains fielded on (J)(Z) this past Friday.

By August 31 (don't know exactly when), these were moved to 207:

3430/3431, 3500/3501, 3550/3551, 3628/3669, 3646/3647, 3672/3673, 3708/3709, 3828/3829, 3856/3857, 3894/3895, 3900/3901.

On or about September 4, these 10 followed:  3376/3377, 3396/3397, 3406/3407, 3426/3427, 3442/3443.

Curiously, these were the "lowest" 10 then remaining at ENY, which may indicate more numerically tidy transfers until all are gone.

At ENY as of September 7 were:  3454/3455, 3578/3579, 3650/3767, 3670/3671, 3698/3699, 3716/3717, 3736/3737, 3773/3773, 3774/3775, 3778/3779, 3780/3781, 3870/3871, 3886/3887, 3912/3913, 3938/3939.

There are only 30 cars listed, not 34. What numbers are the other 4?

I have 3476/3477 and 3664/3665.  Missed their check marks in the margin.  Sorry...

They were indeed listed at 207 Street on September 4.  Could have been one of those infamous "paper" transfers, but they were definitely shown.

First hand observations can always help to confirm or debunk such things, if there are enough eyes out there observing--and sharing.

And on September 21 there were four more at 207:  3664/3665 and 3772/3773.

That would leave 36 at ENY and 186 at 207.

Another list (same date) has eight R-32's out for SMS:  3550/3551, 3664/3665, 3672/3673 and 3708/3709.

All are attributed (assigned) to 207 Street while in the shop.  Let's see where they pop up when finished.
