Javier Posted October 12, 2016 Author Share #26 Posted October 12, 2016 Automated Announcement System I was going to simply edit Javier's post, but I've decided against it. Here's what I have so far for the line. Also, the routes on this list may have been removed at some point. Apologies if this repeats some entries from the first post. Javier Posted October 12, 2016 Author Share #28 Posted October 12, 2016 I did read...which is why I'm saying. Looking through my program book, I for some reason don't see any (A)'s to Dyckman St. The oldest book I have is from 2013, which is probably why I don't see it. Lance Posted October 12, 2016 Share #29 Posted October 12, 2016 I've seen a train signed as an to 2 Avenue fairly recently, possibly for one of the events at Central Park. Someone captured a video of it, I forget who though.

Lance Posted October 13, 2016 Share #33 Posted October 13, 2016 I was the one who took a photo. Ah, yes. I found the photo earlier. And I'm just sitting here waiting patiently for an R142 program list. If I'm not mistaken, someone posted a full list of 142 route options some time ago. You'll have to do some digging though. N6 Limited Posted October 13, 2016 Share #34 Posted October 13, 2016 How are the programs selected? Is it a code like on the bus destination signs? Sometimes it seems as if the conductor on R160s don't know the correct program to select. Also how do they determine which stops say stop says "Does not stop" on the FIND displays? bobtehpanda Posted October 14, 2016 Share #41 Posted October 14, 2016 In the age of cheap ARM processors and RAM, I sincerely hope that the next batch of trains can be programmed using a much simpler system than routes assigned arbitrary codes. I don't know if that's "simpler." Whatever solution they come up with has to be both easy enough to program and quick and easy enough to use, and a routing display with a lot of potential configurations is far from a trivial problem. CenSin Posted October 14, 2016 Share #42 Posted October 14, 2016 I don't know if that's "simpler." Whatever solution they come up with has to be both easy enough to program and quick and easy enough to use, and a routing display with a lot of potential configurations is far from a trivial problem. It wouldn’t require memorizing codes at the very least. Or since trains may be connected wirelessly via WiFi, Bluetooth, or some CBTC technology, these routes should be set by the train dispatcher who knows where the train is going; the route display would be read-only like a subway map. The train crew gets the codes wrong frequently, so something about this bare-bones punch-in-the-code thing isn’t functional.
Javier Posted October 14, 2016 Author Share #43 Posted October 14, 2016 I know what you mean. When the to 179th G.O was happening, my train was coming from 179th and returning to Manhattan, my conductor set the train up coming from Jamaica Center not Jamaica 179th St. The way how this works is that there's a "meter" on the trucks of the R160 that measure where it currently is in the system by using intervals. In this case, when we left 169th St, the train announced "THIS IS - SUPHTIN BLVD ARCHER AV JFK" because the trains thinking it's coming from Jamaica Center not 179th. CenSin Posted October 15, 2016 Share #44 Posted October 15, 2016 The way how this works is that there's a "meter" on the trucks of the R160 that measure where it currently is in the system by using intervals. In this case, when we left 169th St, the train announced "THIS IS - SUPHTIN BLVD ARCHER AV JFK" because the trains thinking it's coming from Jamaica Center not 179th. That much is obvious to anyone who has ridden a train with the wrong direction programmed, a surprise reroute, or the FIND reset in between stations. I was on one where the train stopped in the yard to change the route on the FIND. The train made announcements a whee bit early after that. Lance Posted October 18, 2016 Share #46 Posted October 18, 2016 I don't know why we're assuming the conductor inputs a code for a particular route. While this is still common on buses, the last trains to utilize that kind of programming are the 46s. Even the 110s used a setup that allowed the train crew to select a route and then the designated routing of choice. The process is described here. While it's undoubtedly a clunky setup, a necessity due to the processing power of the computers used for these things, it's far from the code-punch setup you guys are envisioning. How are the programs selected? Is it a code like on the bus destination signs? Sometimes it seems as if the conductor on R160s don't know the correct program to select. Also how do they determine which stops say stop says "Does not stop" on the FIND displays? While there are codes for the route options, as evidenced in the IRT list Javier posted, they are likely only used for software development purposes. If you look at the route codes, you'll notice a common theme. Let's see if you guys can see it. As for removing stops, as described in the link I included above, the conductor/operator can pull up a screen with all of the stops the line is normally programmed to make and simply click the station in question to change it from stop to skip. On the 142s, there's also the potential to add stops as well. That's why you'll sometimes hear "This is a Bronx-bound express train. The next stop is 33 Street." That or something similar. Unfortunately, that feature was not carried over to the 160s, possibly due to a potential coding problem with the FINDs. In the age of cheap ARM processors and RAM, I sincerely hope that the next batch of trains can be programmed using a much simpler system than routes assigned arbitrary codes. I'm sure the 211s and whatever train comes afterwards will have an automated announcement system that is much more advanced than the 142-style setup. These trains' computers will, without a doubt, have more processing power than their predecessors. There's an almost 20 year gap between the 142s and the 211s. I don't know if that's "simpler." Whatever solution they come up with has to be both easy enough to program and quick and easy enough to use, and a routing display with a lot of potential configurations is far from a trivial problem. Of course, they shouldn't be so advanced that there is too much room for things to go wrong. With that said, something like a dropdown menu of line - origin - destination - routing should not be that complicated. It all depends on how the actual recorded announcements are set up. Again, it's not a code-punch setup. Also, I don't see the need to have the routes entered remotely. A remote setup in my opinion has a lot that can go wrong, especially in such a large transit system. Javier Posted October 18, 2016 Author Share #47 Posted October 18, 2016 If you guys remember, do you remember when they showcased the FIND system on the 160's at Hoyt St on the abandoned platforms? That was a coding nightmare gone wrong.

With the cheapness of touch screens, let’s hope they capitalize on economy of scale to get these into the trains as well and get some modern interface for controlling the displays on the train.
