2 Train Master Posted January 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2011 The R-44's have this old train look and are much dimmer compared to the R-46's brightness in its rollsign also the rollsign box.And R-44's had the enabler and that shows(same spot R-46's speedo is)

LRG Posted January 24, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 24, 2011 Another tip: R44s: out of service R46s: still in service Lol!
TwoTimer Posted January 24, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 24, 2011 The dull grey side strip is the 44's defining characteristic (since it used to be blue) from the side (46 is shiny like the rest of the car body). From the front, on each side of the coupler is a chain for its centering device (the 46 has that air assisted one much like the 68/68A). From the inside, those clear panels near the doors define well (there are missing on the 46).
lilbluefoxie Posted January 24, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted January 24, 2011 Another tip: R44s: out of service R46s: still in service Lol! that was taken in March of 2010 when they were still around
LRG Posted January 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 24, 2011 that was taken in March of 2010 when they were still around Oh.... It looks like an R44 to me. I can just see the carbon steel band on the side.
Amtrak7 Posted January 25, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 25, 2011 By the way, how to tell R46 and R68/A?
'89 Liberty MCI Posted January 25, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 25, 2011 46 has LCD side signs and is series 5xxx/6xxx. Motors sound like those on the 62 and redbirds. 68 has roll signs only and is series 2xxx. 68A looks identical to 68 but is series 5xxx.
Novabus 5000 Posted January 25, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 25, 2011 By the way, how to tell R46 and R68/A? No offense, but they have no similarities like the 44's & the 46's.
SubwayGuy Posted January 25, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 25, 2011 R44. Stripe is visible and cab door is narrow and therefore also of the swing variety.
R44 CNG Posted January 25, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 25, 2011 Not all R44's have that gray stripe
traildriver Posted January 26, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 26, 2011 As someone has pointed out to me previously, the molded in wall armrests near the perpendicular seats are different on the two types.
INDman Posted January 26, 2011 Share #18 Posted January 26, 2011 Not all R44's have that gray stripe B) Only 2 cars didn't have the gray strip and there sitting up at 207th St DEAD. Another way to tell that the car pictured was an R44, there was no coupler adapter under the car.
2 Train Master Posted January 27, 2011 Share #19 Posted January 27, 2011 Only 2 cars didn't have the gray strip and there sitting up at 207th St DEAD. The only 2 cars are 5226/8 I believe? I remember back in March I saw 52xx with a stainless steel bonnet.

I guess those are the numbers, there were only 2 cars like that. I didn't notice a steel bonnet when I saw then Saturday and I never heard of that before. 2 Train Master Posted January 27, 2011 Share #21 Posted January 27, 2011 I didn't notice a steel bonnet when I saw then Saturday and I never heard of that before. I meant "Band" aka Carbon Stripe not "bonnet" I was thinking of something else. But I think that was one of the sets bought back b\c there was an 522x over the Summer. R32 Anthony Posted January 27, 2011 Share #22 Posted January 27, 2011 The best way I can sum it up. The R44's are on the Staten Island Railway and the R46 serve the subway lines: and - Rockaway Shuttle. Besides that the R44 had glass between the doors and the seats and the end door was smaller. TrainFanatic Posted January 27, 2011 Share #24 Posted January 27, 2011 By the way, how to tell R46 and R68/A? The head and rear lights on the front of an 46 are positioned horizontally while the head and rear lights on the front of an 68/68A are positioned vertically.
