Is Dianne Thompson the (F) Train Voice? Maybe Not!

Recommended Posts

We're just having a discussion about it, even though it's not the most important thing...

You dont want to argue/waste your time with him, trust me... Already know how this will go, like a few other buffs know...

Guest Lance

who care Dianne Thompson the (F) Train Voice?

it just a voice

This topic was created for the same reason many other threads on minor topics were. While you may find it unimportant, others might feel it warrants a discussion. You know, you could just ignore the thread if it doesn't interest you.

Shut up and use proper grammar. If you don't like this thread... get out.

No need to be rude.

Regarding the actual topic of this thread, as it turns out, Dianne didn't record the announcements on the F-line. Or the A, C or any other B-Division line. In regards to the video Mr Railfan posted here (and on SubChat), someone closely involved with the recording of the automated announcements has confirmed that most, if not all of the A,C,F and shuttle announcements were recorded by Campion and not Thompson. Dianne's voice can only be heard on the 7th Avenue line.

Hope that clears up everything.

Same reason why people foam over (A) via (D) in the Bronx to Avenue X (F).
You know, guys, this is NYC Transit Forums, and when new information is discovered about transit, we talk about it. Nobody so far has foamed over this; we're just having an intelligent discussion about it.

Now I'm curious about who did the (7) announcements...It really sounds like the R110A voice (whoever that is).

I actually have a question... How do folks know about who the actual voices are in the first place? I always found the announcements humorous and thought machines were doing them just because of the way they pronounce some of the street names and words. My all time favorite is "The next stop is... WALL ST!" Whoever says that it just sounds so weird and funny... I chuckle to myself every time I hear it. It sounds like the chick has a slight attitude when she says Wall St, which such a fierce voice. lol

Jessica sounds like that with most of her announcements. She does the (4)(5) and (6) announcements.

Please do because I've never heard of any of these folks. Are they actors, voice talents or what?

As Lance said, they all work or used to work for Bloomberg News. Interestingly, the first announcements were recorded before Bloomberg was elected mayor...

In any case, here's a video of Jessica Ettinger-Gottesman, the female voice on the (4), (5), and (6) lines:

Dianne Thompson does the (1), (2), and (3) lines...I can't find a recording of her voice outside of the subway announcements, but here's a pretty good recording:

Catherine Cowdery does the (B), (D), (M), (N), (Q), (R), (W), (J), (Z), (G), and (E) lines:

And Kathleen Campion has now been confirmed to be the announcer on the (A), (C), and (F) lines:

Finally, there's Charlie Pellet, the "Stand clear of the closing doors, please" guy:

Sometimes I wish Jessica would do the whole system announcement, she sounds better and tough :P.

Just like Westchester's Bee-Line Bus announcements done by a man, so much better then that (MTA) computerized lady, they had on the M16/M34&A.

Thanks... What I don't get is why do the voices sound so robotic if you will?? It's still hard to believe that these are actual humans talking.

It's because it's multiple recordings put together.

For instance,

"This is a Bronx-bound (4) express train. The next stop is Wall St"

Is made up of

This is a

Bronx-bound

(4)

express train

The next stop is

Wall St.

lol... So then what is the point of having human voices recorded?

Charlie's recordings are often splice and dice for transfers, for example, on the (2) at 42nd:

"Transfer is available to the | (1) | (7) | (A) | (C) | (E) | (N) | (Q) | and | (R) | trains. | Transfer is available to the | Shuttle to Grand Central. | Connection is available to the | Port Authority Bus Terminal."
