9to5Mac:

It may seem as Apple is getting ready for the big Apple, underground is what I mean. I have recently been told that Apple is expanding their Apple Pay system to support more than just credit cards, it will ssupportMetroCards, Metro North tickets and more. Apple and the MTA are planning to install NFC readers at all stations, so that people with MetroCards can just "Tap" the NFC reader with their phone and with or without their fingerprint, and the turnstile will activate. Need a refill? Apple Pay will also allow users to refill their metrocards by clicking on the info button. This extends to Metro North and Amtrack tickets, as users can also just "Tap" the NFC reader when the inspector comes and she/he can check it off! It's that simple.

The great thing about such an endeavor is that since Apple Pay and Google Wallet use the same industry standard NFC technology, both would become accepted. I suppose the MTA was satisfied enough with the tap-to-pay test they ran a few years back. That being said, an actual verified source would be nice.

If only we had something similar to Seattle, a smartcard that connects and works with neighboring systems. Out there, they have one card for the entire state and for all of the major systems. It would be nice to at least see something in the form of NYC Transit and PATH compatibility.

But one can dream~~

I could see Smartlink getting merged into whatever system the MTA draws up.

This love affair with Apple is beyond nauseating, and I don't like the fact that the (MTA) provides services that only benefit select mobile users.  Introduce a platform that ALL cell phones can use and call it a day, IF this thread is even legit.  Still no actual source posted anywhere.  <_< I will say that they need to get into the 21st century already.  i'm rather sick of having to go out of the way to a subway to refill my Metrocards when I need the subway maybe once a week if that. Otherwise, I'm nowhere near a subway, and the "closest" one to me in Riverdale almost half an hour away always has busted MVM machines.

Chances are better now then ever. NFC (RFID) seems like it's finally going to get some action all major retailers are required to upgrade POS systems to Chip and Sign by 2015. Making for wider acceptance of NFC I can definitely see more public education and awareness from this shift. Could easily spill over to transportation sector for sure.

Apple isnt using anything special with Apple Pay so if it works with that it should work with Google wallet as well. it's all NFC. I agree it doesn't make much sense if the majority of riders can't use it or take advantage. Im sure it'll work iOS and Android.

I certainly hope so.  I say this because the (MTA) has released a few apps that was pro Apple and had a less capable app for Android or released an app for it later on.  Really unacceptable IMO.  When they release these things they should be available to all sorts of users and not just favor Apple users.

Yeah I can understand abit why they might do something like that. It's definitely harder to get the the experience you want for your user on Android. But it's getting better with Kit-Kat and the New 5.0 lollipop. Providing the user has these versions. Honestly looking the MTA apps there's nothing there they couldn't have done for Android they look almost like hybrid HTML5 apps wrap within native code. Super basic so you got me there..But with that said this new system would take awhile to roll out. The iPhone 6 itself is just below or at 10% for Apple ecosystem so where looking at least iPhone 7 era. If they launch this with out Android support that would be a failure for sure. Are there any other systems using NFC payment?.  I know there are some Standard RFID'systems like in Seattle and maybe the oyster card.

I honestly don't know why they don't just have a website where you can go and refill your card the same way that I refill my laundry card.  Should be that simple.

If the MTA goes with NFC, it'll support Apple Pay and Google Wallet since both use the same standard. Plastic cards can also have NFC antennas, so a smart phone would not be needed. The tech exists, so the MTA and the necessary companies need to work out an implementation.

Facts, NFC is super cheap for the card or NFC tags you'd still need to factor in a machine or way to program or add value to the card tho. But it seems like a no brainer to replace the Metrocards magnetic strips. And cover the segment that's not using Smartphones. Again are there any systems in the US that use RFID or NFC for fares or payments. @viaGaribaldi8 had a idea as well with being able to check your card via the Web or even or Smartphone Via a NFC tap.

From what I understand, the MetroCards are currently super antiquated and locked to a single vendor; I'd imagine that making a website to do that sort of thing would be a lot of trouble, particularly for a system that has less than five years on the shelf.

Hopefully whatever's next NFC,RFID or ICC they should definitely think about having something like that. Would be super helpful

Either way they need to get into the 21st century.  It's ridiculous to have to schlepp to a subway just to get a Metrocard.

The MTA straight up wants to get out of the fare payment business entirely and just accept major debit/credit cards, and probably have a lil debit card pass run by a third company for those without existing bank accounts or tourists who don't have compatible cards.

I agree with you there, but it's probably pointless to try to create some kind of off-site, mobile payment system with the MetroCards since they're on their way out. Eventually.
