NICE Summer Beach Service: N88 and Return of the N87

Recommended Posts

Summer is just around the corner and NICE was nice enough to bring back the N87 this year. Starting May 25th, bus service to Jones Beach returns!

The N88 will run from the Freeport LIRR Station just like last year and provide the service during concerts to the Jones Beach Theater.

The N87 will run local stops from Hicksville, hourly, and serve Newbridge Rd, Levittown, East Meadow and Wantagh.

Yass! Nice job NICE. And even better its running hourly, not every 2 hours (which IMO was retarded under the MTA).

Question now is how often the N88 will run, 30 minute headways wasn't nearly enough. They should at least have multiple buses if they're gonna do 30 minute headways.

The 30 minute headways were there on the schedule, but on busier days like Memorial Day, they had relief buses. However, now, with the amount of drivers they have this year, that may not happen. Many have left since last year.

Interesting!  Typo or will the n/78/79 be extended to the Wantagh LIRR?

Yeah right... they cut back the 78/79, and still have the n73/74. Not likely at all.

22 days until buses roll back to Jones Beach:

Wow. Hopefully the n88 won't be as crowded.

It definitely will be as crowded because of all the people down on the southern tip of Long Island whose local beach is Jones Beach. A lot of the people who took the N88 lived in Freeport or the surrounding areas!

Are you kidding? Everyone who actually lives in Nassau County drives there. I'd say 99% of the people on that bus are probably from Queens.

Hence the word "surrounding areas." The N88 will definitely still be crowded.

A good percentage of the ridership comes from the LIRR Jones Beach package, esp. when there's a concert at the JB theater.

Does the N88 really get that packed? Is it all day? or during certain trips?

Memorial Day and the summer weekends are when the n88 is really packed. Weekdays aren't so busy and rainy days, the buses are empty!

If the weather is really nice, and school's out, good luck even making it aboard a bus, let alone getting a seat.

I remember reading a story on Subchat by an LIB B/O (was it Hound?) who was called from the extra board on either Memorial Day weekend or July 4th weekend to drive the N88 after service ended for the evening...when he drove down to the beach there were literally hundreds at each bathhouse waiting for the bus.
