Because non-fans should know what an R160 is? When my grandmother saw the first R160 on the she said, oh look the Q has the N trains. You're logic just gave me cancer, SMH.
But the idea of the trains "changing to look like N trains" sounds like some hocus pocus bullshit. Even if you are not familiar with the types of cars, there are still intelligent ways to phrase it, such as "trains like those on the N line are being used on the R".
Just think of something you don't know anything about. For my example, it would be cars. If someone were to tell me two types of cars, I would most likely go "huh?"
