Amtrak7 Posted January 18, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 18, 2011 Nice job! Are those third rail shoes on those engines??? Yep, these are dual mode engines (except for 401).
Neil Feldman Posted January 19, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks guys for the replies/compliments. 400-422 are DE30AC's (Diesel-Electric) with no third rail pickup. 500-522 are DM30AC's (Diesel-Electric/Electric Dual-Mode) with Third Rail Pickup. The photo of 517, and 520 on Train 6681 is an extra train from Port Jefferson to Penn Station. The DE30AC's (such as 401 pictured) can't go into the East River Tunnels because they are not Dual-Mode. 503 was involved in a electrical short with a shopping cart hitting the third rail shoe in Greenlawn (non-electrified territory) causing the whole frame to melt, and as a result of that, EMD did a write-off on it even though it was still under warranty at that time. 503 rests in the Bone Yard behind Morris Park. Neil Feldman Posted January 23, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted January 23, 2011 Thanks! I did that with the right reflexes as it was coming in at about 35-40 MPH at the crossing to the station. I was behind the railing, which is right next to the track, so that's where you got the almost head-on shot. Anyways, here are 2 more shots taken at Port Jefferson (1/22) of what came in as Train 6656, and would leave at 5:42PM as Train 6659: Taken just as nightfall is coming down! metsfan Posted January 26, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 26, 2011 That last one has a double ended consist, did they run out of cab cars? - A
Neil Feldman Posted January 29, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted January 29, 2011 Yes, and no! Thursday night, Train 656 had 2 cab cars on the west end of its consist, and sometimes for snow purposes, an engine is put on each end of the consists. Of coarse on DM sets, one engine on each end must be used for 3rd rail in Penn Station. But here is Train 658 I took tonight (Friday, 1/28) in a light snowfall:
