The hell you mean they backed out? Aren't they locked into the contract for the option order?

The M9As are not an option order. They are a separate contract. Kawasaki doesn't want to do them anymore and the LIRR is trying to ban them from bidding on future contracts.

Project update from this months CPOC meeting. Last few cars are under production. A few more under testing or prepped for testing, 164 units accepted at this time. Final car should be delivered in July with acceptance in September. Hopefully this will finally wind down what has been a painful 10 year process….

theyre def gonna need to start the m9a order soon as I cant imagine the m3as being in that  much better shape than the m3s

I mean…I think there is a major difference between the two railroads in that Metro-North has multiple maintenance facilities across its territory but LIRR has just the one (Hillside complex). The fact that MNR took the liberty to overhaul/rebuild the M3A’s should say that they expect them to last a couple years at least till the M9A’s come in anyway. It’s all perspective, the LIRR wants to rid itself of M3’s and doing the bare minimum to keep them in service and MNR is trying to extend their useful life.

I remember an MTA document linked on here a while back saying that Metro North used the funds for M3 replacements to order the replacements for the P32DM locomotives. Metro North probably sees replacing the P32s as the more pressing need, spare parts are scarce and those engines are the sole provider of Hudson line diesel service.

M3s share serving the Hudson and Harlem lines with the M7s, if the Metro North M3s start to fall apart they could just limit them to rush hour only like NJT does with the NEC Arrows.
