Subway - What If?

The two middle tracks at Jay Street ((A)(C) trains) are out of service.

How I would handle it:

Manhattan (A) service is normal, but terminates at Chambers Street or Fulton Street, if Fulton single-tracked between Chambers and Fulton.

(C) trains run normal to West 4th, then via the (M) and then (J) to the Broadway Junction (J) platform (with peak direction service on the express track, this can be done since the (C) is only a 480' train).

Brooklyn (A) trains run Hoyt-Schermerhorn-Far Rockaway only via the local tracks, with the Transit Museum cars temporarily cleared out to allow Brooklyn (A) service to turn (or terminate) at the Court Street-Transit Museum platform (the Museum trains can be temporarily stored on the express tracks between Hoyt-Broadway Junction since those tracks would otherwise not be in use during this emergency). Temporary out-of-system transfers (without penalty) would be set up at the Hoyt Street (A)/©/(G) and Lafayette Avenue (C) stations to handle transfers from other lines in Downtown Brooklyn (Example: Passengers from the (2)/(3)/(4)/(5)/(:D/(D)/(N)/(Q)/® at Atlantic Avenue can use a special OOS transfer to the (A) at Lafayette Avenue during this emergency).

Lefferts Boulevard operates as an (S) between there and Broadway Junction (express to/from Euclid), while the Rockaway Park (S) is also extended to the Broadway Junction (A) tracks and uses the express tracks between there and Euclid.

(M) runs via the (E) West 4th Street-5th Avenue, regular route otherwise.

Honestly the best way to do it in such a case would to have the (2)(3) run local between 14th and 34th, even if it does cause some delays.

But anyways...

(2) local between 14th and 34th

(F) runs via the (G) between Queens and Brooklyn, LOCAL

(M) runs between Metropolitan Avenue and Broad Street (J)(Z)

I'll use what you do for the buses, but as I would do it:

(B) terminates at 34th Street-6th (using the express tracks between 34th-West 4th).

(M) runs via the (C) from West 4th to Columbus Circle and then replaces the (B) and (D) as a local from Columbus Circle-205th Street.

(E) and (F) run as you note, except I would have select (F) service terminate at 57th Street and 6th or 7th Avenue in Manhattan.

For stations north or south of 14th Street on 7th Avenue (depending on travel), take the (E)/(F)/(M) to/from 14th Street-6th Avenue and walk to/from the 7th Avenue Platform at 14th Street OR (4)/(5)/(6)/(N)/(Q)/® to/from Union Square for the (L) to/from there.

For both of the plans mentioned above, the (A)(E)(F) (or, even worse, the (A)(E)(F)(M)) would not all fit on one track (the short segment at W4 St needed for (A)s to switch back to 8 Av).

My solution:

(A) No trains between 14 St and 59 St. Transfer between sections via B/D trains.

(C) No trains between Chambers St and 168 St. Use the A/B/D instead.

(D) Trains stop at 72 St to allow (A) trains to terminate at 59 St.

(E) Trains run via the (F) between 5 Av/53 St and West 4 St.

(M) Trains run in two sections:

  • 71 Av to Whitehall St, via the (R) in Manhattan.
  • Broad St to Metropolitan Av, via the (J) in Manhattan.

(Q) The last stop on some Astoria-bound trains is 57 St/7 Av.

Transfer between sections at Canal St.

(1) No trains between 96 St and South Ferry. Downtown trains run express from 137 St to South Ferry.

(2) No trains between 42 St and 14 St.

(3) Service suspended.

(4) Trains run to New Lots Av.
