Random Thoughts Thread - Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE)

Had another "nice" fail today. Had 1720 on the n51, last trip from Merrick to Roosevelt Field, the bus kept stalling out at stoplights, and finally gave up at Merrick Ave & Jerusalem Ave. This route has lost alot of riders, we had a few commuters on the bus who use it to go from the train station to East Meadow, they got off & walked.

I see alot of the people who USED to take the bus now getting picked up at Merrick, quite a few take taxis (I'm sure Mr.Mangano is happy about that!). These are folks who do have access to cars but chose to take the bus to avoid parking hassles, they make good salaries so a $10 cab fare every day is no big deal to them.

They probably got burned too many times by breakdowns & no shows. And I'm sure after today the cabs will have a few more customers.

As for myself, I decided not to wait if or when the replacement bus would come, and got the n54 to HTC. Last time I took the n54/55 to HTC actually was when MTA was still around. Today my bus was only half full, and only about 15 ppl were going all the way to HTC. When it was MTA there were probably 95% of the seats taken.

HTC was unusually quiet too, I didn't even see any packed n6's. Then to add insult to injury the driver on the n35 almost misses my stop. And we got delayed 10 minutes because the light at Endo & Miller in NCC wouldn't change, he actually called it in, instead of just going through it.

So I lost 45 minutes tonight thanks to NICE.

If I was well-heeled I'd probably take a cab too.

Look closely you can see scratch marks. Seeing more unwrapped NG's too, they can't afford to fix the peeling ones...

The County needs to kick in more funding, that is the problem in the 1st place. MTA never would have left if Mangano just paid up. Suffolk County does. So does Westchester.

First off, Nassau voted to end the contract with the (MTA) because of their waste, and need more money attitude with little in return..

Second, you really need to get over (MTA) leaving it was a blessing in disguise, a better managed company that can do more with the money is running the show.  It's not Veolia's fault NICE is under funded...

Do you really not get the fact that if (MTA) came back tomorrow the system would be worse than with Veolia running it?

  (MTA) has higher standards,

Like over half their LIB fleet failing a DOT inspection (a basic safety/roadworthy test)!?!

And am trying to move next year to a good area on the Babylon line (Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford, etc) where there is frequent train service so I dont need to use NICE to get around much.

Where are you trying to commute to?  The city? Around the island?  I've lived in a couple of different towns along the Babylon line for years, I also commuted into the city to go school.  The LIRR SUCKS it is never on time, crowded, always late, later when it rains, massive system failures which makes commuting a disaster.  I've been so late for school, all I'd have to say to the professor is "sorry, I live on Long Island and take the LIRR..."  They'd just go "oh..." as if they understood...  If it wasn't school but a job I probably would've been fired, not to mention the fare is $200-$300 a month.  The only thing the LIRR has going for it is that it's legal to drink on, so you can get drunk to forget about how bad commuting on the LIRR sucks there's a reason just about everyone on the PM rush is drinking!

If you are moving to Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, or Seaford the n19 is pretty reliable, but they cut service in the afternoon to hour headways instead of 30 min headways which sucks if a driver is running hot during those times.

So I lost 45 minutes tonight thanks to NICE.

You're gonna lose more on the train, trust me..

These are folks who do have access to cars but chose to take the bus to avoid parking hassles,

I don't buy that for a minute.  There are exceptions to the rule but mostly people take bus because they don't have a car or can't/aren't allowed to drive...

Something happened to me yesterday that forced me to come back (that and the suggestions of my friends). I guess others may know me better than I know myself.

So on the n35 from Baldwin Harbor, it was the 7:15pm trip, bus 1718. I'm waiting by the LIRR station & he comes at 7:13pm. The bus was very light the whole way up, and after HTC, I was the only one on the bus all the way to Westbury.

So we're on Stewart Ave and he never makes the left into Roosevelt Field. Just keeps going straight. Then when we get to Privado, he hits a curb, then decides to turn around in a parking lot behind one of the office buildings, I then approach him & ask him if he knows where he's going. He told me he never did the n35 before and wasn't shown the route beforehand, and that he left his schedule & map (paddle too?) back at the yard. I told him he missed Roosevelt Field, he confused Roosevelt Field for Nassau Community College and thought they skipped RF on the weekend! Anyway, I told him he was going the wrong way on Privado (he u-turned in one of the lots) and so he had to make another u-turn.

I had to show him the route the rest of the way to Westbury. When Veolia was confronted recently on Facebook about the dropping ridership, they blame the April 2012 service cuts and claim it's going up. They brag about how they are saving Nassau Taxpayers "$30 less than the MTA per service hour", but you can see where they are saving that $30, as their maintanance & driver/route training is of a much lower standard than MTA. Then I also chime in the same thread about all the breakdowns, they said this is why they "eagerly await the new buses". But I see the 3G's breaking down too! All the buses sound terrible, sure the V's get the brunt of it but even the 3G's are in bad shape. I really hope when their contract is up the MTA will come back. They are losing so many riders due to the poor service. I saw a V broke down yesterday on W.John St too.

And for a couple of weeks Miller Ave was closed between Lot 3 & the west side of NCC, many drivers skipped either Lot 3 or the west side, and some skipped both (on one n35, driver asked if I was going to NCC, I said no, he said good, and skipped all of NCC).

There was no notice on the NICE website & they never got back to me about a detour for NCC. You'll also notice a number of FB complaints about their new mobile ticketing app, apparently some people have lost tickets they already paid for!

These people don't have a clue on how to run a bus system. Their service changes dont make sense (just look at the n87) and they keep losing riders. Nassau County is getting what it paid for, which is very little. I hope Mangano is out in the next election and the bus system is restored to it's "former glory".

I could see a similar campaign for a restored (MTA) LI Bus as there was for the subways in the late 80s.

sir I dare you to try the N58 sir. SCT's fare structure alone chases people away. Would you like to try the bee-line system For a day then come back. One more thing 60% of NJT BUS &RAIL riders own cars!!!

SCT? Suffolk County Transit?  Their fare system scares people away?  What is scary about $2 and 25cents for a transfer?

No!  I don't in Westchester and I have no plans on going to Westchester...

Okay, and this is Nassau County not NJ.  Apples and oranges...  Does NICE Bus offer service into Manhattan?  ...and many (if not the majority)of LIRR riders have cars.  That doesn't change the fact that the majority in Nassau County take NICE because they can't/aren't allowed to drive or don't own a car!!!

the bus system in Nassau only has riders who don't or can't get cars for these reasons : 1) poor peak service 2) parkways 3) buses don't connect directly to job centers or go where people WANT to go NYC doesn't count. 4) poor access to LIRR Trains. If NICE offered service to Manhattan it won't get used why LIE & LIRR thats why. 5 ) LIB/NICE always did a very poor job attracting choice riders with some exceptions N6,70/71/72& 58 being outliers. You do realize SCT daily riders pay more than NYC transit users right.

I am sure riders at RFM waiting for that n35 that time was not happy.

Nobody who uses buses in LI is happy ever. It got so bad the preachers harrass NICE bus riders now.

For a bit of good luck you should make me your LIRR goodluck charm but it happens to me on other systems so whatever. Let's get this straight public transportation anywhere on long island is nothing but SHIT. However I do find the drinking on the LIRR amusing glad I ain't the only one who noticed how everyone on the LIRR is drunk hay at least you get free entertainment that is better than the shit you see on the subways. One doesn't simply associate public transit in LI with on time well not Westchester on the second on time.

I had all good NICE driver today after stopping at free coffee hour with Riders Alliance at Queens Center Mall.

I board 13:15 n20 Hicksville #1805, nice male driver. I gave him flier I organized about cash fare increase and schedule change for August 31st and he was happy I was doing that. I handed to passenger about cash fare increase. Got off North Broadway/Manhattan Av at 14:33.

I hurry hike to Jericho Public Library use my name on LIBRU petition to get guest pass for internet. I bought cookie from Snack Vending Machine.

After that, I jog to Whole Foods, where I found Whole Food cart on freight area, so I decided to use it and bought Uncle Mott's Organic Lemonade Juice (since no more Grapefruit), and Vermon Bread Cinnanon Raisin bread, and 1 Vegan Blueberry Muffin.

After that, while I was waiting to cross North Broadway at Manhattan Av, I missed late 15:52 n49 Hempstead b/c I drop my folk/spoon wrapped in paper napkin with tape and rubber band.

While I was waiting for 14:50 n20 Hicksville that suppose to come at 16:14, fire truck were coming out from Jericho Volunteer Fire Department with siren on and one car near bus stop lane almost didn't stop, so I stop that car since I was wearing my orange vest. Few minutes later, they came back and I got to see fire department action in busy highway before my bus came 1 minute late at 16:15, Bus #1720 and got off at Hicksville Station at 16:24.

I rush inside train station but no new schedules for n20/L/21 and n24 bus, so I got on 16:15 n48 Hempstead #1685 4 minutes late from 16:31 at 16:35, suppose to arrive Hempstead at 17:04, arrive 13 minutes late at 17:17.

I check inside but no new schedule for n1, n6 and n35.

Then, I rush onto 17:20 n70 Melville #1691 departed 1 minute early 17:29 and it was less people. He left all schedule point 4-5 minutes earlier since it was only 5 people onboard. Arrived Pinelawn Rd/Newsday at 18:20, 2 2 minutes earlier from 18:22.

I follow group of car drivers to line for entry. Line was crazy like about quadruple size of line for Statue of Liberty which strecht all the way from Rutland Rd to Visitor Parking at Pinelawn Rd.

After 20:00, Frozen started.

After 20:30, nice Newsday employee will escort me to bus stop anytime since I was asking for direction to bus stop.

After 20:45, I went back to same Newsday employee and meet him at 20:50 and his name was Tim. I greeted him with "Nice to meet you."

After that, I saw n70 bus sitting by grass, which was 21:05 n70 Hempstead #1710, last bus of day from Newsday.

It was female driver and it was only 1 minute late and she was nice. There was on regular passenger gave her some kind flier.

I got offf at Secatogue Av for Farmingdale Station at 21:23 and walk to train station, trip over median in station parking lot because lights were dimmed. I gave her flier of fare increase/schedule info/bus protest rally flier since she was very nice.

After that, I took Ronkonhoma train straight home to Woodside for (7) train. I transfer to (7) train in 1 minute from 22:28 to 22:29.

You should never do this!  You are not authorized or trained to direct or stop traffic in any way!  I'm telling you this because not only could you have killed yourself but if you caused an accident the motorists or insurance companies could have sued you and held you responsible for the damages.

Now give him a speech about getting a job please!

Don't quote me on this, but I believe electrically was what a driver told me. Not sure though.

My trips are more extreme in his defense then again my trips have purpose and I get paid. This is yuki it's a lost cause don't bother. At least I try different transit systems.

It doesn't belong to NICE Bus schedule. I created myself to include fare hike/schedule change info to let them know since most people don't want to use phone to see schedule.

Slightly off-topic, I usually help my FDNY friends (since I'm muskot) and stops pedestrians/tourists/horse carriage from crossing in front of Emergency Vehicle.

Back to topic, on my way to Newsday on n70 Melville, only couple used GoMobile.

Correction switch most with very few then you would be accurate. Most have smartphones you are a minority realize that. People can get their own schedules you aren't needed for that.!!

Hahaha Libru is a joke to everyone who rides a bus in nassau suffolk lb and the mta. There useless helpless would not depend on them if needed to report on a driver. There a third party also there not a union.

NICE Bus Jack Khouz attended our LIBRU Forum with retired NICE Driver (Cindy- for privacy no full name), also LIBRU.

She was only LIBRU-NICE Bus Driver. She wasn't retired yet at March 2014. She retired from NICE Bus/TWU Local 252 because she lost election of TWU Local 252. Even former Vice President Pamela has retired from TWU Local 252/NICE Bus.

Also today, there was no A/C working on 14:25 n20 Hicksville #1728 from Flushing. I had library meeting in Brooklyn Heights, so I got off at Great Neck Station and took 14:27 n20 Flushing #1653.

Thanks I really getting tired of hearing Libru spam thought I show him how I feel about that useless group.

I could educate them on how to better use and unite all the forms of transportation available but that may prove difficult. One more thing I do not simply have the time for them. "Ain't Nobody Got Time For That" I have too much going on. However I did leave a lasting impression on NJT as some of their higher ups spotted me before I recognized em while doing stuff in Hoboken (non-transit related). I bit off I hope I don't leave a similar one on NICE that would scare me.

Well, this section is doomed in a sense, kinda like nice bus is....

:P

On another hand, I think any NICE discussion has been discussed already, and has been gone over already plenty of times. It's just the same thing over again (then again, suburban transit systems barely change, unless you got Mangano as your county executive).
