Harry Posted October 18, 2012 Share #1 Posted October 18, 2012 [float=left][/float] Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota and NYCT President Thomas F. Prendergast recently visited the Bombardier Transportation manufacturing site in Plattsburgh, N.Y., which will produce 300 next-generation R-179 subway cars for NYC Transit in a $600 million order funded by the MTA Capital Program. They viewed NJT commuter rail cars and CTA subway cars being built, and visited a test track where Lhota briefly operated a nearly completed CTA car. Metro CSW Posted October 18, 2012 Share #2 Posted October 18, 2012 I seen photos of these cars for Chicago. There called the 5000-series rail cars. The first test prototype cars were delivery in 2009. Production cars to be delivery through 2014. The Amount is a total of 706 cars, the largest fleet since the 2600-series. All lines with exception of the Blue and Brown lines (if your familiar with the 'L' system, sorry.......) will on stock for revenue service. Here are some photos of the new cars. ---> http://www.flickr.com/photos/ctaweb/sets/72157627960132703/with/6326376353/ <--- Videos of the cars can be seen on youtube via EyeTube21's account. We're getting R179's, not CTA 5000 series cars... Based on earlier drawings by Bombardier and the MTA, they will be identical to our existing R160 cars and will look nothing like the CTA 5000 series
GojiMet86 Posted October 18, 2012 Share #5 Posted October 18, 2012 Huh?? We're getting R179's, not CTA 5000 series cars... Based on earlier drawings by Bombardier and the MTA, they will be identical to our existing R160 cars and will look nothing like the CTA 5000 series The thing is that Lhota went to Bombardier's factory, which is making not just the R179s, but Chicago's 5000s and some NJT commuter cars. So he's just tallking about those 5000s.

Brighton Express Posted October 18, 2012 Share #7 Posted October 18, 2012 The work they did on the NJT BBL was amazing. One of my most favorite trains in the entire system. Hope to see the R179 out soon, there have been many concepts, so eager to find out which one it was.
RookiePhenom Posted October 19, 2012 Share #8 Posted October 19, 2012 It's helpful to know what successes they have (and well, the 5000's are a success aside from the seating, which I can care less)...and they only have 120+ cars/760 at the moment... Joel Up Front Posted October 19, 2012 Share #9 Posted October 19, 2012 I just hope they don't turn out as crappy as the M7's did.
Princelex Posted October 19, 2012 Share #10 Posted October 19, 2012 While they aren't gonna look like the 5000 series, they have updated the front end design if you haven't seen the latest renderings. Well they need to update the R179 to have color-coded destination signs like the CTA 5000 series cars.
LTA1992 Posted October 19, 2012 Share #11 Posted October 19, 2012 I just hope they don't turn out as crappy as the M7's did. Um........they DID construct the R142.
Threxx Posted October 19, 2012 Share #12 Posted October 19, 2012 Um........they DID construct the R142. .....Which in my opinion are crappy trains. But in terms of build, you can't fault them there. They are well built trains, whether I like them or not.

RollOver Posted October 22, 2012 Share #17 Posted October 22, 2012 The R179s are coming to our lifetime. Hope for more news about these trains to be posted by other members soon coming in 2013 at the official R179 thread.
