R3216068E Posted July 11, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2015 So guys I was just wondering what are some good differences between the R44s and R46s I know the R44s would always fart before leaving the station but can you point out some other differences here are some R46 pics Here are some R44 pics
ttcsubwayfan Posted July 11, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 11, 2015 Trains don't "fart". I have no idea what it is you heard, but it was likely part of the air system.
Eric B Posted July 11, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 11, 2015 The biggest thing was the cab door. (44: Small and swings in; 46" slides like all the other end doors). Also, the 44 cab is smaller, and the 46 added space to the cab by taking away a seat outside. After GOH, the 44's still had the glass shields nxt to the doors, while for the 46's, they were removed. MysteriousBtrain Posted July 11, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2015 Don't forget the white side stripes found on R44s.
Fresh Pond Posted July 11, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 11, 2015 Don't forget the white side stripes found on R44s. It was a carbon steel stripe.
Kamen Rider Posted July 11, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 11, 2015 with the last 20 odd years, if there was paint on the side, it was an R44. Gotta keep they carbon steel covered.
BDNQ2345 Posted July 11, 2015 Share #8 Posted July 11, 2015 The r44 sign lower than r46 sign in front same as the r68 sign is lower than and r68a sign
GGTrain Posted July 11, 2015 Share #9 Posted July 11, 2015 A noticable difference is the top of the door sills. Th R46 is rounded and the R44 is not. Also on the inside of the R44SI there are stress cracks from doors to the top hinge of the door panel used to house door controls. I noticed on the R46 this was eliminated by the addition of a horizontal crease from the door to the door panel. I assume this issue was also happening on the R44 subway version given the R46s were modified. Also I read back in the 70s that the R46s are a foot longer than the R44s. There is an additional seat at the ends I think.
ttcsubwayfan Posted July 11, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 11, 2015 According to the data sheets, nope, the R44 and R46s were the same length. http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/caption.pl?/img/cars/sheet-r44.jpg http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/caption.pl?/img/cars/sheet-r46.jpg You sure you weren't riding a B car? Those would have extra seats on account of the lack of cab.

Art Vandelay Posted July 17, 2015 Share #12 Posted July 17, 2015 R44 and R46 are the same length. The extra seat in the R44 comes from the smaller cab.Yes, the mainline R44s had the same cracks. Substantially worse in my recollection. Some other differences I don't see mentioned: Lighting fixtures: R44s had a metal brace in the middle of the downwards facing surface of each longitudinal fixture. R46s do not, (except for those fixtures taken from R44s.) Transverse Seat Arm Rest: There was a (rather uncomfortable) bar over the armrest on R44s. This is not there on R46s (Or 68/68As for that matter) Rain gutters: Continuous on R44s, with small round holes for rain to drip through. The R46 ones have roughly 3/4 inch gaps strategically placed. That is all that is coming to my mind at the moment.
Lance Posted July 17, 2015 Share #13 Posted July 17, 2015 I want to say the 44s also had those plexiglass partitions between the seats and the doors that weren't present on the 46s.
INDman Posted July 18, 2015 Share #14 Posted July 18, 2015 I think the R46s had them when delivered and they were removed during GOH.
traildriver Posted July 19, 2015 Share #15 Posted July 19, 2015 IIRC, the R44 was built by St. Louis Car, and the R46 by Pullman-Standard....there are probably a lot of mechanical differences....
Fresh Pond Posted July 19, 2015 Share #16 Posted July 19, 2015 The R44s had a higher brake pressure compared to the R46 (which is a SMEE)
