I thought more of the lower numbered R160B Siemens cars were going to be rotated to Coney Island yard to keep 120 cars in Coney Island. And what happened to 8918-8922/8928-8932, which was running on the (N) a few days ago?

It was sent back to Jamaica. The train bolded was at C.I for maintenance and returned to service as an (F) .

They’ve been swapping units very frequently. I don’t Know why either.

With this particular fleet swap, I'm assuming maybe it has something to do with the lose of (R142 6346-6350) from the March 27 fire incident and to make up for it they acquired 7121-7125 from the (4).

Isn’t 405 cars each for the (2) and (5) enough for both lines, given that the line only needs around 360-370 cars for normal rush hour service? Are the transfers of cars 7121-7125 meant to prop up their spare ratio after cars 6346-6350 after that fire?

It's to replace 6346-6350 from the (2) incident. Also, the (4) has enough trains as the total calls for 36 out of 42 trains in passenger service.

I know that, but I thought the (2) and (5) could get away with having only 40.5 trains each. Doesn’t the (2) and (5) also require 36 trains in service or a little bit more?

8913-8917, 9088-9092: C.I to Jamaica

C.I R160B Siemens units are all on the 9000 series: 9008-9012, 9023-9087, 9093-9102 (8 10-car trains)

Jamaica probably wanted 8913-8917 So the car numbers are more uniform. I would have expected 9008-9012 to go instead of 9088-9092. So much for keeping 120 R160s in Coney Island, considering that Jamaica didn’t transfer out as many R46s and (prior to the pandemic and R179 issues), the R32s were being retired out with the R179s

Act 2:   Leftover R46s that were at Jamaica Yard were 5498-5501, 5506-5509, 5570-5577, 5734-5737, 5802-5805 and 5826-5829: 28 cars = 3 8-car trains with a 4-car spare. They were moved to Coney Island around May 2020. One month later, Coney Island sent 3 10-car trains of their R160s (Siemens propulsion) over to the (A) line because of the R179 failures that then resulted to the exchange to Jamaica Yard. Those units are 8888-8892, 8913-8917, 8938-8942, 8978-8982, 8993-8997, 9003-9007 and 9018-9022.

Act 3:  Moving to December 2020: Coney Island Yard had at least 9 10-car trains of Siemens R160Bs in their hands 9008-9012, 9023-9102 but they were sent to Jamaica Yard to have CBTC installed on the QBL and easier grouping as Jamaica Yard has over 1,000 subway cars in one class type. In exchange, Jamaica Yard sent out 9833-9922 to Coney Island Yard, Alstom propulsion cars. Used mostly on the (N) and (W) lines.

From start to finish, the result(s) consist of Jamaica Yard being 100% R160 while Coney Island now has a mixture of train equipment being R46, R68/A and R160 class car(s). This changes as most (but all) ex. Coney Island units are at Jamaica Yard and that's the same for Jamaica at Coney Island.
