NYC Subway retired/scrapped cars thread

Coney Island Av

Recommended Posts

hello everyone. this a thread to showcase stored, retired or even some scrapped subway cars (similar to the scrapped equipment thread on the bus side of the forums). i decided to make this a thread because quite a handful of cars have been getting retired as of late so here is a page to showcase the full listing of retired/mothballed cars (as of my knowledge).

this thread will be divided into two sections, one where it lists the cars still on property but are currently OOS, retired and awaiting possible scrap. the other section will include already-scrapped cars post-2010.

this does not include any cars preserved by the NYTM. i will also only be including retired/scrapped cars after 2010 to avoid making this a more lengthy thread than it already is, not including a few exceptions. feel free to add any additional retired cars to the listing as the number of retired cars will increase over time.

bolded cars indicate converted to work service.

**the retired and currently active R32s in 2020 will eventually be trucked to sims metal and scrapped

Thats all. it took me a while to type up this thread, but i wanted to provide you all with convenient information on which cars have been retired so that everything can be complied into one database/thread.  while this thread may seem redundant, i feel otherwise given the scrapped equipment thread on the bus section of the forums (like mentioned earlier) and also this thread could come in handy later on when the 211s start coming in and more cars begin to get scrapped. i hope you all enjoy this.

Someone on Wikipedia last night posted that SIR R44 car 399 is currently stored at the Coney Island Yard but has been stripped of parts and out of service.

Can anyone please confirm (pics, vids, etc) if you guys can?

You can't make out the numbers here, but this link from google maps shows a single SIR car and a 4 car set of R44s sitting at CI yard.

@Amtrak706, whelp, time for some new edits to the R44 article on Wikipedia sooner or later then. I'm so excited and can't wait till someone posts more information about that lone SIR car and the four-car NYCT cars. I look forward.

Don’t get too excited. There’s a 99.9% chance all 5 of these cars will be scrapped

Oh when I said excited, I meant there's a possible chance we may have found some pretty accurate information about those five R44 cars enough for the R44 article on Wikipedia. Especially after all these past 10 years since they were last thrown out the window in general. Because you know, Wikipedia always gets a bad rap sheet for being "unreliable" even though 90% of the information the users on that site, including myself, write down are based on actual sources from the MTA themselves as well as those in the know. Ask @Union Tpke, Epic Genius, and they'll tell you.

I don't care for the R44s like that lol.

Where is 5286-9? I had heard something about a 4-unit set of R44s surviving the 2013 scrapping but I never saw anything confirming that. Supposedly they were badly flooded in Sandy as well.

this is indeed correct. 399 is oos and sitting in coney island as well as 5286-9 (recently took a look at the yard). 3786-87 is also there (that pair is also done for, has been oos since 2009 and is stripped too).

although @R68OnBroadway did show a screenshot of google maps i have some pics of the aforementioned cars.

note: no trespassing was involved in these pictures, there is a small public road that runs in front of the yard (took these photos through the fencing).

Where can you see the retired R42s and R32s now? Are they sitting idle at 207? If so, are they at the scrap area (by 215th) or are they at where the museum trains are layed up (by 207th).

the R42s are mainly scattered across various yards throughout the B division. coney island, pitkin, east new york to name a few.

the retired R32s are at 207. they are stored on the side of the yard facing the river (or also where the museum trains and all active equipment on the (A) is layed up). nothing appears to be sitting at 215. however i did see one retired consist of 32s sitting in pitkin as well a couple weeks ago.

@Coney Island Av, good looks. Appreciate it. Do you have those photos of yours linked in your Linken? If you have one? Reason why I'm asking is so we can use this as reference.

@Union Tpke, what you think? Should we update the R44 article on Wikipedia using @Coney Island Av's reliable information?

some retired R32s they could retain (due to lack of Phase I pairs in the NYTM fleet):

3354-55 (was apart of first R32 run to GCT, 1964), 3360-61 (also was apart of the first R32 run), 3380-81 (only R32 pair to have an R30 blind end), and 3444-3777 (makes sense to save at least one mix-mated pair)

also it is possible, tho not confirmed, that retired R32s will go into work service to replace the R33WFs. the WFs are in poor condition and are less durable than the R32s. if this happens, the WF work motors based out of 207th and 38th at the very least will go to scrap.

If this is the case, then what are they going to use on the 'A' division? I know they use some R62s on the Flushing Line, and I know the R127/R134s do not have Air-Conditioning, therefore...

I think they will use extra single unit R62A's for the A division once the remaining redbird work cars go away.  Once the R262's come in, I think they will replace the R32 work motors (except R127 and R134) with R62A's.

Most likely  and retrofit them with a diversion valve so they can go into both divisions.  Makes sense.
