I look at your list and the 3 sets that haven't run since August could easily just be out for service.  There'll always be some that are sidelined in every car class.

Yeah, like I said, I don't think any 4-car R46 sets are retired at the moment. On the other hand, it's highly likely that some of the married pairs are retired!

From what I read here some of the married pairs are being used for parts.   With 7 sets of R211s in service and 3 more sets doing burn in, they'll have to start moving cars out soon.

Yep, and the married pairs are first to go. I don't want to say that a married pair is retired for certain, but I have a feeling all the ones that aren't currently running are retired.

I see a pattern in the numbers and the dates.  It looks like the higher numbered 4 car sets have been sidelined the last few weeks where the lower numbers are not.  I wouldn't call it a hard and fast rule, just an observation.

Well, their retirement hasn't been confirmed and is currently unlikely.

In other news, R46 set 5550-5553, the set involved in the shooting in Sunset Park, is confirmed to be retired. Cars 5552, 5553, and 5550, have been moved from the Belt Parkway side of Coney Island Yard into the shed. Multiple parts were seen missing.

So you saying that A line uses all there 27 and 28 sets of R46 on the weekday for revenue service.

The (A) / (S) need a total of 47 trains to make service + spares (38 (A) trains, 2 (S) trains, and 7 spares).

Currently, the (S) has 2 R179 trains, and the (A) has 7 R211 trains + 9 R179s, requiring 22 R46s to run on the (A) every weekday. the spare factor leaves 2 R179s, 1 R211, and 5 R46s in the yard. The (C) I would say uses 4 R160s, 8 R179s, and 6-7 R46s (this variance in the R46s indicates an R46 that leaves (A) service and transfers over to the (C) for midday service, and then back to the (A) for PM rush hour service, since the (C) now has more frequent midday service than rush hour service. As a spare factor for the (C), there are 3 R179s and 2 R46s and 1 R160

By my count there are 40 or 41 complete trains of R46 available including the AA sets.  This does NOT include the sets that haven't been used since August, which by my count is 3.  The count of active + spares above comes to 22 + 5 + 7 + 2  = 36.   So, 44 trainsets were assigned, 36 are truly needed including spares, that leaves 8 trains of R46 ready to be retired, cannibalized, or just stored somewhere.  On top of that I believe there are 3 trains of R211A on site, with one being put into service today.  And of course more are on the way.

All this to say, they have to be starting soon to move these.  Maybe CI needs some, but maybe not, and maybe some CI cars are on their last legs and should go first.  Having been on the A a few times recently though the Pitkin ones are in no better shape, maybe even worse.  I'm located along the Q and I see those all the time and they are in bad shape too.

Can confirm i saw it at high st around 5:30 today

This pair, specifically 6218 has a notably loud air brake release that sounds reminiscent of the Pre-GOH R-46 air brake. (That's unless they've fixed it since I last seen it on the (C) on August 28th)
