Originally the R211's were supposed to come in only 5 car sets, but now the Wikipedia article says that Option 2 will include some 4 car sets for use on the BMT Eastern Division. However, it does not include the exact breakdown. Does anyone know what it is, or why they decided they needed more 4 car sets? My guess is that they're planning to run the with 8 car, 480 foot trains after the goes full length. From my calculation, with the R143's, R160's, and R179's that are in 4 car sets, there isn't quite enough to do all that and have the appropriate spare ratio. With the current number of cars, the ratio would be 17% in that service pattern, but in a different thread, it was said that 27% is typically the goal.
Alternatively, if the ran 600 foot trains, that would mean not as many 480 foot trains would be needed, so the R211's would only need to come in 5 car sets to maintain uniformity.
I also wonder whether there's political pressure to get the newest cars on certain lines, and if the R211's were only in 5 car sets, they would not be able to go In the BMT Eastern Division at all.
It also remains to be seen where the R211's enter service. With the R179's, they were given to routes that were still running R32's and R42's. If that continues, then the R211's would go to Coney Island and Pitkin which currently run R46's. That would be different than when the R160's came in and a lot of fleet swapping was done, so the lines with the cars being replaced didn't necessarily get the new cars.
Look at the note in the article which I added:
QuoteAn option order with 333 cars would only result in 83.25 train sets of four cars, but an MTA board meeting document from October 2018 mentions 89 four- and five-car trainsets in the second option order, all of which would be equipped with communications-based train control. Assuming all 437 cars will be equipped with CBTC, the order would have to be divided into 81 five-car sets, totaling 405 cars, plus 8 four-car sets, totaling 32 cars.
These are almost certainly for increased service on the .

The revenue loss is severe because the way the does OOS transfers is quite open ended - swipe in literally anywhere, then get a free transfer at the OOS transfer station.
Once OMNY comes around, I think they could make the OOS transfers a bit more closed in. Let's give Atlantic Av as an example: within fare control, have a "tap-out" scanner, with a big sign saying "Tap here to get a free out of system transfer at Lafayette Av or Fulton St " (with a map showing how to get to those stations). Then, the user gets 30 minutes after tapping out to tap in at the transfer station, so that the system can't be abused.
Just like the pink readers in London.

I feel like the needs to update the Line Review because a lot has changed with the Line between 2013 and the present day. If anything, we can all agree on the following:
- Trains need to be lengthened to at least 480'. Preferably, it should use 8 car R-160's or R-179's for the upcoming CBTC upgrades, and for compatibility with Queens Blvd CBTC just in case an Train needs to be rerouted.
- Build a Hewes Street/Broadway Transfer should be a serious consideration given its success during the Project. (A Union Avenue station along the and to consolidate Hewes Street and Loimer Street would be more preferable though I'm not trying to get ahead of myself).
They never reviewed any lines other than the A/C, F, G, and L, and you want them to go back to the G?
They said they might do one for the R after SAS, but never did end up doing it.

Is there any real reason why they don't? Same with providing a transfer with the and lines with Atlantic Av. Is it a revenue thing? Does it really cost them that much?
They claim they will lose too much money.

By searching these domains on google, you can find some interesting things:
E.g. New York City Subway - WordPress.com new2.mta.info › sites › default › files › subway_map_app...
For instance, this is the subway map for the reopening of WTC Cortlandt. Notice it says Cort_unlock_Sep2018

@Lance Do you have any idea why the MTA created a developer website with its press releases, but still relies on the old website to host them?

It was the whole optics of the situation, back when it was announced. That was really the beginning of the end for Andy Byford, because it signalled that Cuomo was willing to interfere very strongly. Now if this reconstruction actually works without a hitch, I would be willing (grudingly) to give him credit.
Byford was very against the change. Maybe in a few years I can share a bit more on this based on my interactions with him at a few MTA Board meetings.

Now the cat is out of the bag, I can share a bit. That was the initial plan for the April pick, and was initially set for last December. This is the deinterlining plan I have hinted at. I didn't think it was still going on.

Someone might be able to explain this better but, those codes were the programs and the reason for they show is either due to some R46 never receiving the upgrade or the update didn’t transfer to their LCD displays.

Looking through this, I realized how little I had appreciated the work that went into designing cars. All parts of them are ridiculously interconnected, any errors can have fatal consequences. I do not envy the job of the engineers and designers on the project.
Here are some more highlights. I took a lot of screenshots. I will post the rest tomorrow.
QuoteCrime and Anti-Social Behavior – the Contractor shall propose layouts for CCTV cameras in the car’s interior that will optimize visibility (see Section 13 - Communications) and shall provide messaging and signage from worldwide experience targeting security for NYCT review.
QuotePersonal Space – interior designs shall include means to minimize undesired physical interactions between customers. For example, USB charger layouts should minimize the potential for charging cords to hit or interfere with the seated customer.

A new bridge is not needed from Roosevelt Island. You have the and the Tram. Also, think about where you would put the bridge. The main problem is how are you going to have enough space to make the approach long enough to be high enough for boats to pass under? You are going to have to take the entire island up and destroy a lot of expensive property on the Upper East Side, and will likely require a complete reconfiguration of the FDR Drive. Please, I am begging you, think through what you are proposing if you want your ideas to be taken seriously.

Sharing a little research.
Going off some photos, it looks like black-on-white Unimark signs showed up on the 8th Avenue Line from Chambers through at least 81st, possibly a little higher beginning in the spring of 1969. Express stations got the new signs and at least the majority of local stations too. That lines up with the Unimark contract for design in 1966-1968 slowly being implemented. These signs were made properly, with what I believe was photographic enlargement of the lettering instead of the hand stenciling that showed up on a lot of the other signs during that era. [Either that, or really professional stenciling.] The more northern stations didn't get updated until the mid-1970s, when some of them received white-on-black signs with a white square for bullet (the transition style) turned up for the first time. Those were hand stenciled signs and they weren't modular like the Vignelli signs, but the current form of a single metal sign with a steel support riveted inside. Basically of these lasted until around 1988-1990 when the last of the original overhead signs, many panels replaced and the others covered in stickers for service changes, were finally replaced. Some stations received well-made porcelain overhead signs with 10" bullets around that time, but soon the cheaper sheet metal signs with small bullets that we know today took their place. A lot of stations still have the 1988ish porcelain signs installed, with sheet metal signs hanging over them. One became visible while signs were being replaced 59th St. not long ago, but it was quickly covered up. Another set of porcelain signs with standard Helvetica, not Medium, turned up and a number of stations during the mid-90s. Many of those are still up, all the way out to the Rockaways. That generation marked the end of porcelain overhead signs in the subway. All the other 8th Ave signs are late-90s and 2000s-2010s sheet metal.
In terms of pillar signs, nearly every station kept its original 1932 porcelain signs until the 1980s, some later. Most stations received number-only white-on-black enamel signs that read '72, 81' etc. around 1982 or 1983. Some didn't – Chambers kept original signs until the early 1990s. Those signs were first replaced with larger enamel signs that included the word 'Street' in the mid-90s at some stations, and in the 2000s with non-enamel signs of the same variety (and the correct Helvetica weight). The last of the 1982-1983 signs were removed from 135th and 72nd over the past few years. Some of the mid-90s signs are now being replaced with cheap, poorly-designed sheet metal signs, like at West 4th and Chambers.
Amazing research. It would be amazing if you could share some photographs to accompany this. Keep up the great work!
