BroadwayBuffer Posted April 8, 2010 Share #352 Posted April 8, 2010 Or they could just have it say "Metropolitan Av bound train via Brooklyn" - something to that degree. I'm pretty sure that Bronx bound trains announced as either Parkchester or Pelham Bay Pk bound while in Manhattan. So if it can be used there, then Metropolitan can also be used in Manh with the . Fresh Pond Posted April 8, 2010 Share #353 Posted April 8, 2010 Its gonna be the same as before. When the (M2) goes to Bay Pkwy and you're in Manhattan, it'll say this is a Brooklyn-bound (M2) train... on both the NB and SB trains. I'll just break it down... (M2) destinations NB -South Bklyn: This is a Manhattan-Bound (M2) train... -Manhattan: this is a Brooklyn-bound (M2) train... -North Bklyn: this is a Queens-bound (M2) train... -Queens: this is a Metropolitan Av-bound (M2) train... (M2) destinations SB -Queens: this is a Brooklyn-bound (M2) train... -North Bklyn: this is a Manhattan-bound (M2) train... -Manhattan: this is a Brooklyn-bound (M2) train... -South Bklyn: this is a Bay Pkwy-bound (M2) train... New destinations NB -Metro segment: this is a Brooklyn-bound train... -Brooklyn: this is a Manhattan-bound train... -Queens Blvd segment: this is a Forest Hills (or 71 Av)-bound train... New destinations SB -Queens Blvd segment: this is a Manhattan-bound train... -Manhattan: this is a Brooklyn-bound train... -Brooklyn: this is a Queens-bound train... -Metro segment: this is a Metropolitan Av (or Middle Village)-bound train... YankeesPwnMets Posted April 11, 2010 Share #354 Posted April 11, 2010 I think that if the gets rerouted over the original (M2) for some reason, if would probably be like Catherine: This is a Chambers Street bound M train Diane: via the Nassau Street Line Catherine: The next stop is Canal Street
Guest lance25 Posted April 11, 2010 Share #355 Posted April 11, 2010 Probably, though it would most likely be "via the line" rather than via Nassau St. I think that the only time you would hear the trunk line names on reroute announcements are on the (2)/(5) switcheroo. Come to think of it, IIRC that only the line announces "via the 7th Av line". The announcements are the same.

I believe (please note this may/may not be true) that all the the announcements for the routes are recorded into separate bits, and the computer pieces them together. rr4567 Posted April 13, 2010 Share #366 Posted April 13, 2010 I think so as well. I can hear as the computer pieces them together. Do you sometimes ride NTTs and hear a slight pause while it's making the announcement? ex. This is a Bronx-bound train, --pause for 1 or 2 seconds-- The next stop is 96th Street. it's either the computer making the delay, or I'm going insane And now I definitely know these NTTs use a mini-Windows. Once on an R142, I saw the TOD screen, and sitting there was a nice "Non-system disk or disk error Replace and press any key when ready" message. Windows for anything other than the typical home consumer is horrible. I assure you they fail frequently. The MTA could have also saved a lot of money by not using Windows and using Linux instead. It's not like there's an excuse not to use it anymore as Linux is very well developed (and likely even more than) Windows.

Joe Posted April 13, 2010 Share #371 Posted April 13, 2010 "Non-system disk or disk errorReplace and press any key when ready" That's a generic message generated by the BIOS, not Windows. Though I highly doubt the trains' computer runs NT 4...
YankeesPwnMets Posted April 14, 2010 Share #372 Posted April 14, 2010 I don't think the 160s would run on Linux OS because there is very little support for it, it cant run Mac OS X because there are Max Deadlock Obtained messages on the LCD screen sometimes, and I dont think they would run Windows 2000, ME, XP, Vista or 7 because these are fairly modern and I bet all of them have some kind of virus exploits in them
