SUBWAY - Random Thoughts Topic

It is partly due to sign change effort required.

sometimes, just as an example, an N or W arrives at Astoria and the train is switched over to the other line. If it’s an R68, they often skip it for the next 46, since all the 68’s signs are manually changed, where are the 46s, the end signs are motorized.

having to manually crank all those side signs takes a lot of time, which we often don’t have between arrival and departure.

The benefit of bringing back brown K type service would be to allow better usage of the express tracks between Myrtle station and Broadway Junction.  From Broadway Jucntion, the fastest potential trip to midtown would involve using those express tracks on a train that then heads to 6th Ave.  (L) would be slower than this service, because it has too many stops.  (A) would be slower because it takes a longer trip via the Financial District.

Now the number of trains that can run along this stretch of track is limited, so there are defiinitely concerns about dividing up the service in three ways, but could we potentially consider the following:

Orange J Jamaica - serving all stops between Jamaica and Broadway Junction - rush hour express between BJ and Manhattan - 6th Ave local - QBL local to Forest Hills

Brown K:  Atlantic - local stops along Broadway Brooklyn - Chambers (rush hour only)

Brown M: Metropolitan - local stops along Broadway Brooklyn - Broad Street

That's a fair point if it was well scheduled, this could be a good way to take people off the (L) and provide people towards the end of the Jamacia El a quicker commute into the city.

Now that I think about it, why doesn't the (Z) as is use the 3rd rail to run express between Broadway Junction and Myrtle Avenue? Seems like it'd be at least worth investigating on the MTA's part.

2 Questions I've been pondering:

1. Why is it at 34th St-Penn Station for both 7th and 8th Avenue lines, the platforms are set up in the unique config of an island platform for the express tracks and 2 side platforms for the locals? I find it especially frustrating sometimes as a NYer cause sometimes the local is quicker if the express won't come for a while, especially on the 8th Avenue Line where the (A) isn't really an express until it gets downtown Brooklyn and on weekends both the express and locals are very infrequent.

2. For all the IND's overbuilding, why do several platforms in really key locations feel so cramped and tiny? I'm talking about Fulton Street on the (A)(C), Lexington Av 53rd on the (E)(M), ect. At the time they were built, they were already in the city center so they had to have known they'd be busy, even if they weren't express/quad track stations. Honestly seems like IND sort of built all their stations to similar size/metrics regardless of location and ridership.

My understanding is that Penn Sta on both 7th and 8th Aves, as well as Atlantic Ave on the IRT, were built that way to limit people transferring at those stations because they were already going to be crowded.  As for the narrow IND stations you mention they are all the ones at the river tunnels.  They are also deep.

3015 on the (A) has an airbag or an underbody problem, it hit a gap and almost fell off the trucks of the car (not literally off course but it did lean intensely on the left). It was also beeping the entire ride.

that was the train that was removed from service southbound at 59 St Columbus Circle during the AM rush. (3015-3019/3318-3322). This morning I was going up on the (A) (bound for "Dyckman St" around 9:45AM from 14 St) and when we got to 42 St, the destination sign was changed to a "168 St-bound (A) train". After 125 St (and literally crawling up Central Park West), the train switched over to the local track and bypassed a stuck R46 (A) train on thee express track near 125 St. Then when we arrive at 168 St, everyone is ejected from the train, only for the conductor to put the train back in service because it's going to continue to 207 St.

The service backup must have been pretty bad for a train that normally drops out off service (a short-turn) to continue serving the full route. Is this practice common during rush hours, or is it on a case-by-case basis, depending on the severity of the service gaps.

Example: Last Friday, the (L) train was a shit-show, with very limited service to 8 Av most of the day, and then in the evening, there was a 30 minute gap in Brooklyn-bound service because a Manhattan-bound train had broken down near Montrose Av and backing up all the trains, yet the few trains left in Manhattan that were ahead of it were sent out towards brooklyn on a normal headway, despite the service gap behind them. The inconsistency gets frustrating because imagine clearing a platform of people waiting for a train as busy as the (L) for about 30 minutes. I would have thought the dispatcher would either turn some Canarise-bound trains at Lorimer St to reverse to 8 Av and provide service on that segment of the line, or at least space out the departures from 8 Av to mitigate the large gap. (you ended up with a gap of 4 minutes between trains followed by one 30 minute gap, then back to 3 minute headways because of the larger volumes of trains now coming from Brooklyn.

I rode the <F> from Jay St up to West 8 -NY Aquarium today. It was the 4:27 PM departure from Jamaica-179 St, hadn't been on the selected Brooklyn Express trippers for a while. When getting to W.8 St, the schedule was 8 mins early upon arrival (Paper/web had it at 6 PM, arrived at 5:52 PM). Although, when it got to Church Av, it met with a local (F) to Coney Island but, they let that train leave first to avoid traffic ahead.

* Speaking of surfing, there was a (7) train that went BIE only because someone spotted teens on the back of the train leaving 33rd St-Rawson St. Crew (both T/O and C/R had them leave with a disgraced look to "Why?" and NYPD was there as well escorting them off. (3:50 PM today)

Wait so the person who saw the subway surfer pulled the emergency brake and got reprimanded? Or the surfer got caught and reprimanded?

It was someone inside the train that pulled it. That's seen from the last car that's visible through the oval glass, surfers were outside the train. They got caught because there was a officer at the Flushing platform and one by the entrances of the station.

This was from when I got to the platform, the (7) left while getting another (7) train behind to Manhattan.

The MTA only says to pull the emergency brakes if the train being in motion threatens someone, but wouldn’t the train going BIE threaten the surfers just as much

they shouldn't be up there in the first place. what if the train has its emergency brakes activated due to an issue on the tracks or the train experiences a mechanical issue? the surfer is still taking a big risk that that will happen.

They wanted to do that when they were looking to bring back alternate stops along the (J) train, but they determined that it was just not worth the cost. As a result, the express track north of Myrtle has always been used for General Orders instead.

I wonder if the (7) will ever get its TOMC special rides back, it’s so unfair how the (7) is excluded out from these events because of CBTC

Ah that kinda sucks. In an ideal world, I think it would be most optimal and would provide a lot clearer benefit than skip-stop.

In an ideal world, many years ago, the Jamaica line ran skip-stop service from 168th St to Eastern Parkway and then express to Manhattan during the rush hours. Carry on.

Wasn’t the Concourse express project fixed already? Why are (D) trains still running local because of “major structural repairs”?

Structural work between Kingsbridge and BPB. Instead of working on it when the line was shut down last year and over the weekends, they decided to close the express track again 🙄

Feels like we haven't had express service up here in ages... they wrapped up the last project nearly a month ago, it's crazy...

The R160As out of East New York Yard are getting cleaned on the exterior. Spotted a train on the (M) today that’s cleaned out with no dirt marks on it looking shiny in appearance.

Thats because crews pointed it out to the TA’s president and he saw it for himself and was appalled. So now trains will have to be cleaned regularly to maintain the integrity of “pleasant and appealing” reliable service…
