LTA1992 Posted August 28, 2011 Share #126 Posted August 28, 2011 LTA1992 coming to you live from Coney island and from what i can tell you, my grandmothers 9th floor apartment windows are one of the few without tape on the windows. There are police roaming around with flashing lights and every now and then a car rolls by. We've already had a downpour and that rain was enough to interfere with my signal. We have no hot water nor elevators. Apparently the flooding is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Truckie Posted August 28, 2011 Share #128 Posted August 28, 2011 Scariest Photo Of The Day ( Courtesy of Marjorie Anders of the Metropolitan Transit Authority) The conditions of GCT that the photo illustrates repeats itself every day! Every morning @ 2AM GCT is shut down, doors are locked, cat let out..... The only activity is workers in the terminal. The only difference is the departure boards being completely blank. While I was there @ the shutdown I will admit it was odd seeing that in the middle of the day. Hats off to the MTA Police and dealing with the stranglers giving them a hard time. After the last train departed (12:20 Croton Harmon local) the terminal was filled with tourists taking pictures and a wedding party doing their wedding pictures. Even after 15 minutes of announcements leading up to the closure, people didn't get it. They were giving the cops a hard time and ended up being escorted out. East New York Posted August 28, 2011 Share #131 Posted August 28, 2011 All trains remain suspended. Crews are now assessing the situation. Service may very well be restored in full by tomorrow evening. - Subway, bus and rail service remains suspended as Hurricane Irene makes its way through the region. Do not attempt to travel on the MTA's public transportation network until further notice. Suspensions and restrictions are also in place at MTA bridges and tunnels (see service status on the left of this page). The process of assessing the damage from the storm cannot safely begin until the storm passes locations around the MTA's 5,000-square-mile territory. Thousands of personnel and the necessary equipment have been positioned at key locations so that workers can begin this process as soon as conditions allow. In addition, Governor Cuomo has directed the National Guard to assist in the recovery efforts and helicopters will be provided to quickly assess damage. SubwayGuy Posted August 28, 2011 Share #137 Posted August 28, 2011 LIRR also has trees down over tracks, no photos though. It's going to be a while before things are up and running at all, let alone normally. I suspect limited bus service may begin this evening in some areas, but that's me speculating...the roads are not that bad in a lot of places. If they can get a few buses out, more employees can get to work, and more things can start running.
Shortline Bus Posted August 28, 2011 Share #138 Posted August 28, 2011 The Mayor just had a joint press conference which included boss Walder. Both are hoping to have most of the citywide bus service up by Monday. However they stated it could until late Monday for subway service to return. An MTA spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that a Tuesday reopening is more likely. Full story here. Very true. I know the WSJ and NYpost are both owned by Mr. Murdock. With that said, I quicker trust the WSJ or even NYDailynews for most breaking news stories than the Post.

R188 7857 Posted August 29, 2011 Share #146 Posted August 29, 2011 Both are WRONG. From the Website : NYC Transit Subway service will resume Monday morning. The restoration of service on the subway system will begin at 6:00 a.m. and is part of an MTA service plan that will restore some service to the subways, buses, and SI Railway by the morning rush. Staten Island Railway (SIR) will resume service between St. George and Tottenville at Midnight. Damage assessment is continuing on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, which was hit hard by widespread flooding and mudslides. All MTA Bridges and Tunnels are in full operation, tolls remain suspended for today. MTA crews were met with widespread impacts following Hurricane Irene, including track and yard flooding, downed trees and power outages across our region. Crews are moving as quickly as possible to restore service while ensuring the safety of our customers, employees and equipment. Determinations about the timing of restoration of rail services will be made after assessments are complete and in consultation with the Governor and Mayor. These conditions are affecting different parts of the transportation network in different ways. Low-lying yards and depots where trains and buses were removed were flooded. It will take time to get equipment back into position and personnel in place. In some parts of our system, especially heavily flooded areas outside of New York City, restoration of service may be a lengthier process. Our assessment and recovery efforts are being assisted by Governor Cuomo's allocation of National Guard members. New York City Subway With limited exceptions, service will resume across the subway system at 6:00 a.m. Monday morning. Service will be less frequent than normal, and customers should expect longer waits and more crowded trains. Frequency of service will improve over the course of the day. Specifically: o 3 trains will operate between 137th Street/City College and New Lots Avenue; Substitute bus service will be provided between Harlem 148th Street and 135th Street connecting with the 2 train. o C trains suspended; A trains will make all local stops from 207th St. to Lefferts Blvd. •No service in the Rockaways. (Rockaway Blvd. to Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park) o 6 trains runs local in the Bronx o 7 trains run local o S Franklin Avenue Shuttle (FAS) Suspended o N trains terminate at Kings Highway. Shuttle bus service between Kings Highway and Stillwell Terminal. The Staten Island Railway will resume normal service at midnight tonight.
