SubwayGuy Posted April 16, 2010 Share #226 Posted April 16, 2010 Without railcar diversity railfanning would be a bit dull.Eventually railfanners would have to resort to other cities to railfan or resort to busfanning since there is different types of buses to go around. Or maybe they will find other hobbies to fill the rest of their time, learn to live a balanced lifestyle, and maybe even use some of that newfound free time to take showers, brush their teeth, start using deodorant, and cutting their hair and fingernails. Art Vandelay Posted April 16, 2010 Share #228 Posted April 16, 2010 I am somewhat surprised that 5268-69-71-84 is still running. 5268 was known to be problematic in the past.
Art Vandelay Posted April 16, 2010 Share #229 Posted April 16, 2010 From what I have heard, the next sets to be retired roughly in order of how recently they have had work done should be: 5206-5209, 5222-5225, 5234-5237, 5242-5245, 5249-5251/5270, 5252-5255, 5256-5259, 5260-5261/5276-5277, 5262-5263/5302-5303, 5268-5269/5271/5284, 5272-5275, 5278-5281, 5320-5323, 5328-5331, 5338-5341, 5410-5413, 5442-5445. The rest theoretically should not be touched until these sets are off the road, although 3 of the sets pulled are not on my list of ones which are slated to be retired immediately. Perhaps they were poor performers.

The Real Posted April 17, 2010 Share #232 Posted April 17, 2010 cross checked your list, and that makes 212, not 204. I have 204 cars active, I didn't get the FULL list of the cars scrapped and there was 8 cars that I did not get numbers for...

Bill from Maspeth Posted April 18, 2010 Share #234 Posted April 18, 2010 Check out this news story that I found from a georgia news station pretaining to subway car reefing of he coast of Georgia. Its quite sad to watch but its a good clip.I may warn you though,if you are a fan of R40 slants and R32s.Get yourself a kleenex. http://www.11alive.com/news/local/earthwatch/story.aspx?storyid=133831&catid=199 Thanks for the link. I never saw that particular clip before. I am still against that method of disposal tho. Till the day I die, I call that "off shore dumping". I thought there was a quote in the story about the cars landing on the bottom in their "natural" postion. How can that be when I saw some, not all, being pushed overboard, others being placed down so hopefully they would go straight down. If they land upside down or sideways and the roofs are damaged, and the roofs can easily collapse under high impact, the cars would be completely crushed rendering them useless, unless I'm missing something. Bill from Maspeth Posted April 18, 2010 Share #235 Posted April 18, 2010 ...And that number is going to plummet within the coming months. Yeah, especially over the last weekend of June when the number of 46's currently required for V service dwindles down to zero. That will allow a whole load of R44's to be retired in one swoop. Bill from Maspeth Posted April 18, 2010 Share #236 Posted April 18, 2010 yay! R46s [to me] are better overall imo. But I do like those 'glass' partitions on the R44s though. That's one thing I'll miss. The folks in the Rockaways will especially miss those particians on those cold, windy days down there whenever the doors are opened. Agreed; this whole idea of "dumping" the subway cars is terrible. Don't get me wrong, I understand the concept, but I'm against it.
INDman Posted April 18, 2010 Author Share #238 Posted April 18, 2010 It's a tough situation, abating the cars so that they could be scrapped is very expensive. I don't remember if it costs more then the scrap value or if it just brakes even. What i don't get is why they can't scrap the trucks, there has to be some value there and i doubt they make for a good reef. I can't wait to see what happens with the R44s though, I know there not being scrapped yet (I think only 1 set was stripped).

INDman Posted April 18, 2010 Author Share #241 Posted April 18, 2010 I'd rather see the metal recycled and used for other purposes. It's not economically feasible. Can't they keep the trucks as spare parts? They have more spare SMEE trucks then you can shake a stick at. I know CIY has at least 20 in the truck shop and 207th has many of them too. I'm sure they have some at some of the other shops too. What they don't have are some of the other spare parts, which transit in its infinite wisdom, got rid of. They should use one of the train cars for an eating establishment in a park somewhere. It would be pretty sweet.

Because of the asbestos that the cars still have, the MTA would be VERY reluctant to sell anyone a car. It could be done, but it's really not worth it. Art Vandelay Posted April 18, 2010 Share #246 Posted April 18, 2010 Reefing cars costs a fairly substantial sum of money. Scrapping them costs a fairly substantially larger sum of money. Reefing the R44s costs a lot more as you have to make a lot of the same preparations (and more) as you would for scrap cars to reef them. As far as the trucks go, they are taken by barge to a scrapyard. On another topic, while trains may lose a substantial amount of their structural integrity if they do not land right side up, they will still do quite well as artificial substrates. LRG Posted April 22, 2010 Share #248 Posted April 22, 2010 Okay guys, it seems that R44s aren't even going to be reefed because the stripping offices at 207th Street are down. The barge has left as well as the crane, so nothing else can be touched. All the old equipment hat's left (32s and 42s) will be around for another 5 years at most because it doesn't seem like the MTA will be getting any federal funds to order new cars anytime soon. It's a done deal right now. It'll probably take years for the R44s to be done away with in their entirety. It looks as if they'll just be sucking up yard space in the meantime.
