Does the railfan community attract certain kinds of people?

If you have everyone chasing and very few people paying to go on trips, the TM makes no money and there will be NO trips. This is why the route of all the summer trips is kept as quite as possible.

Speaking of photographers, some of them are zealots about people getting in the way of shots. I remember in 2003 on my first MoD trip where I was yelled at because I was in the way of a group of people's shots. All they had to do was tell me to move out of the way nicely, but they had to yell like the train was going to move in 3 seconds....

Yep. It's very tragic.

Because they are ass holes with no understanding of how to socialize in the real world.

My first fan trip was many many years ago... 2002 when the ERA ran Redbirds over the B Div. Luck would have it that I got sometime at the RFW, I was 12 or 13 at the time so being just a kid, there was no reason for me to be there (sarcasm) only to be yelled at for ruining someone's shot. Now on trips, I just give it right back to them. It's a picture, get over it.

I just spent the last 20 minutes lurking at Subchat. Tony Clifton (aka Terrapin Station) is still trolling and R30a made his 2,000th remark about how express buses should be eliminated. I'm glad I left that cesspool. I've been stress free ever since I left Subchat. All of the trolling and foam at Subchat nearly killed my interest in mass transit. Thank God for NYCTF.

On top of that, it's not like you're getting paid to scream like an animal in the zoo. I'm with all of you guys, a lot of the foamers are embarrassing because they are so inconsiderate of those around them and it's not just the teenagers, but also the adults. Some of them should get their asses kicked for thinking that they own the RFW or whatever spot they are in and not making way for people on those Nostalgia trains.
Thats why I wonder if I should ever go on a railfan trip with other railfans. Im afraid that they might not know how to act in public.

All I'm gonna say is watch out who you hang with. A few don't know how to act in public.

They don't know how to interact with anyone else.

Don't let those a**holes stop you from going to any of these trips. Why miss out on the fun because of a few people who don't know how to act or wash their butts? As long as you are doing you, everything will be gravy. Lots of good people come to these events. In fact, I'm going to the Nostalgia train events the TM has planned this summer and I'm sure a lot of the looney tunes will be there too but it won't stop me from having fun. Whether I am with a bunch of my friends or alone (and I have done both) I'm still gonna do what I want to do and I hope you will do the same. Ride these trains for yourself and have fun man! :P

When I rode the Nostalgia train along 6th Avenue I had a good time. I met Fred G and some other railfans. None of them were acting like they belonged in a mental institution. I also saw Brian Weinberg. He's about 5'7". When he saw me he quickly walked away. Getting back to the topic, on some of the unofficial railfan trips (the ones that NYCTF has) things can get a bit silly but since it's mostly high school students it's acceptable.

1 or 2 people is ok , but anymore then that is a risk. Mobs of Railfanners can be a disaster. Fights can break out , sillyness can get you kicked off the platform. I'm a Quiet Railfanner , i don't like talking while filming , its distracting. I also don't see the point in a bunch of Railfanners bunching together and getting in each other shots , at least spread out on the platform.

That's why you avoid the groups of 100 :P

You're keeping track of how many times a person says something? Me thinks you are too obsessed over that place.

So good for you that you don't like that place, we get it already. No one is forcing you to post there.

many of them making train sounds or yelling out there own announcements,

Please tell me they were 5 - 10 years of age........

Even at 11, that becomes unacceptable (unless they are mocking the announcements). If these people are teens, young, and older adults, they need to be euthanize. I would walk away from any "sane" adult, with a camera the size of the Hubble Space Telescope dangling from their necks, making train noises, and yelling out their own announcements. That is just embarrassing to watch. It is embarrassing imagine them doing those things...........

All true. I have seen little kids and their parents quickly TURN AROUND AND RUN disgusted after trying to get little Johnny or Suzy up to the front just so they can look out the window the way every kid on a museum trip should be allowed to if they want. Why? Because a bunch of degenerate foamers who last took a shower during the Clinton administration want to film bullshit out the front of the window and put it on Youtube for the umpteenth time.

They need to put it on YouTube, as it is their form of porn. Those whack jobs, whack off watching it. I bet they have now sticky DVD's, they made too..........

Next time they yell at you, you say Please, kiss my a$$.............

I wish I could tell you they were little kids, I wish I could. It's the museum trips that really bring out all the wack jobs and crams them into a small space. The Yankee Game Low-V special back in the fall brought out alot of them, the lead car was unbearable to be in with all the extra sounds being made by the people drooling at the window.

I see alot of people (adults) that make random train noises on the fantrips. That's why I steer clear of Car 1.

I know. It gets to be annoying after 5 min.

I'm glad this thread got people's attention. I thought I was the only one who saw the kind of whackjobs associated to this hobby.

That being said, I think it's hard to make a good friendship with these people you meet online or on those fan trips, because you have no idea who the person is, and considering the amount of idiots, you never know who you run in to.

Also, I hope some of those special museum trips don't literally get destroyed ... look around, what other city has this much to offer in transit history?

The chance of a museum car being damaged by these "people" is very low, you should see the amount of people there are watching to make sure no one does something stupid as well as to take care of any issues that my arise during the trip. Usually there are 10 or more TA workers in vests and some others with out.

Yeah, as bad as foamers are, they are likely the ones to 'defend' the train. I remember a few years ago about some ***** kicking/hitting the door of an R9 because it wouldn't open at her stop.

Normally I wouldn't give a shit if that happens, but I have to side with the foamers that you don't 'kick' the door of a train especially an antique one.

Sounds like nothing a Hammerhead couldn't solve.
