Mysterious2train Posted October 29, 2011 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2011 (edited) No way 63rd Street can handle the , , and . I already said something similar in another thread, I'd send the via 6th Av/63rd St, and the would be sent up 8th Avenue to 168th Street or something. The Q32 and the M4 would have to be alternatives to the from Midtown to the East Side. Imagine if the Brooklyn IRT underwent some changes... Since it's a little hard to see... - There's a new track leading straight from the downtown local track to the Flatbush-bound track. So the downtown local trains can go to Flatbush, and the downtown express trains can run express to Utica or local to New Lots with no crossing at all. The runs local to New Lots (some trains run express to Utica), and the express to Utica Avenue. Going toward the Bronx, the and both stop at Kingston Avenue and Nostrand Avenue. The Manhattan-bound platforms at those stations are extended to reach the old express track. So the and are already on the express track, and the and from Flatbush end up on the local track, with no trains crossing in front of each other. The local track from New Lots Avenue is used by trains from New Lots Avenue, and right after Utica Avenue they switch onto the 'express' track. The 'local' track continues as a lay-up track right up until it ends before Kingston Avenue. The uses R142s coming from the . The uses the (3)'s R62s and the few R142 sets it has left. The only problem is, like B35 via Church once said, Franklin Avenue would look like Times Square. Coney Island-42nd Street-6th Ave Coney Island-42nd Street-6th Ave This wouldn't work because you have the ( also running on 6 Avenue, and if you terminate trains at 42 St, you're going to encounter severe crowding with trains blocking northbound traffic to wrong-rail out of the station to go back southbound. Downtown/southbound, the switches don't exist for this to work. At W 4th, you can only switch between the 8th Ave and 6th Ave LOCAL tracks. So you could switch a train on 8th Avenue to the F tracks, but there's no switch to get it from the F tracks to the bridge tracks. Your B and D would be stuck with nowhere to go but the Culver or Fulton lines. (Uptown/northbound, there is a crossover between the 6th Ave express and local tracks located just railroad north/compass west of Broadway/Lafayette.) Here's my answer to the 53rd Street/7th Avenue question: north terminal at either 34th or 42nd Street, although the could probably just be suspended suspended, with its cars going to extra service on the . rerouted to 205 St/Norwood, runs 24/7 (maybe terminating at WTC late nights). You could probably just extend the southern all the way to Metropolitan. I'd imagine the J and M would be infrequent enough for that terminal to be able to turn both, plus then you wouldn't even need the M shuttle.

Anyways, I'd end at 149 St/Concourse, terminate the at 59 St via local and terminate the at 125 St. OR Terminate all 7 Av/Broadway trains at 96 St. Why? There are no switches above 59 St/Columbus Circle.
Kacie Jane Posted October 30, 2011 Share #18 Posted October 30, 2011 Lexington Av-59 St to Times Square-42 St is flooded on the Broadway Line. What would you do? It depends how crazy you want to get. There are switches that would allow 34th to be used as a terminal, but they're located north of the station. Depending how badly Times Square was flooded, that area might be out of commission, too. According to the track maps at nycsubway.org, the next station south of there that could be used as a terminal isn't until Whitehall Street. So if we can turn trains at 34th, it's pretty easy. The runs in 2 sections, Astoria-QBP, and 34th-Coney. Then you either suspend the and run the to 34th (with the B running Brighton local to Coney Island), or you shuttle the R in Brooklyn and run the Q to 34th. (Or if 34th can only handle one train, you suspend the Q and shuttle the R. ) If you can't turn trains at 34th, then you have to suspend the Q, shuttle the R to 36th, and shuttle the N to Whitehall. (And curse the BRT for building the Broadway line with so few switches.)
GreeneggsnPelham Posted October 30, 2011 Share #19 Posted October 30, 2011 @IRTBronxExpress: He means the lower-level of Lex-59 on the to Times Square---so it does make sense. When I first read it, I thought he meant Lexington Av trains as well. Anyway, I would run shuttle trains between Ditmars and QBP, and those wishing to get to 42 St directly can take the . On the southern end, I would end trains at 34 St/Herald Square, and suspend service in Manhattan. would have to run via tunnel and via Bridge. This is only because there isn't enough capacity to terminate all three Broadway lines in midtown. The would end at Pacific-Atlantic, with transfers available for the . For the affected area, passengers can use a shuttle bus between Times Square and 59 St-Lex.
Eric B Posted October 30, 2011 Share #20 Posted October 30, 2011 In terms of operating costs and such, the best way to handle that would be: - Local in Brooklyn - Unchanged - Unchanged - Unchanged - Via Lower Manhattan - Suspended - Unchanged They wouldn't have to suspend anything anymore, because the (Mx) is gone, so placing the there would just be three services, like when it was the (Mx)

All Broadway trains via Local. If all three services can fit through the 60th tube, they sure as hell can fit through the Montague. Bedford Pk/145 - WTC, local, except nights. 205th - Euclid, express Manhattan, local Brooklyn, nights to WTC. Parsons/Archer - Coney Island, express Queens/63rd/Manhattan/4th Av via Bridge/West End, local in Brooklyn nights. 179 - Kings Hwy/Coney Island, express Queens/53rd then normal.
