Subway - What If?

VWM

Recommended Posts

I put no opinion in to that, I was just trying to come up with something creative. If you don't like my "What If" post, you are more than welcome not to.

Also the <Q> ran just fine on Broadway between 2001 and 2004.

You're post was not creative. It was unrealistic and results of the said reroutes are costy and illogical. You said the R32s have "rot to the ground" (How is that possible?), forcibly cutting the said line entirely which means other lines have to be rerouted to serve its former stations. You are aware that the (C) is basically a shorten (A), right? As I said before, there wouldn't be enough extra spare cars for added service since the R32s are out of the road and you can't just yank some other cars from other lines to make up service for another. And if the (A) ran local entirely 24/7, travel time increases for many residents of Inwood, Washington Heights, East New York, Ozone Park, Howard Beach, Broad Channel and the Rockaway peninsula, all of which mostly head to and from the populated areas in the city during their daily commute. Meanwhile, the (C) is just the local counterpart and feeder line between 168th and Euclid, allowing the (A) to run express between these two said stations based on ridership levels/demands from the said outer residential areas it serves.

And about the "<Q>" thing...once again, the BMT Broadway Line is already problematic as it is. You already have three other lines running there. Why add a fourth line to said corridor? The unused tracks at Lexington/63rd are out of service due to ongoing work and some (N) and (Q) trains already get stored between 42nd and 57th Streets. There are already bottlenecks at Herald Square and the 60th Street tubes. Where else would the <Q> go other than tying up traffic further up/down the road in Midtown/Downtown Manhattan? The (B) is fine as it is.

I can see that we are not going to agree here.

If you dislike the post, then pretend it went like this: “All R32s are discovered to have major structural issues, and need to be taken out of service for repairs.”

And the only thing I can think preventing a Q Express is the Q’s being held up at 34th Street to let a N or R pass. This can be avoided by switching Q’s at 57 Street, while the N and R make their stop at 49th street which gives the Q some time. The Q Express could either go to Astoria, or it could terminate on the Express tracks north of 57th street. (That lead to Lex/63)

What if Columbus circle was closed? The only tracks that are open are the 7ave express tracks, all the others dont have power

Weird, but here goes:

Planned:

(A): No service b/w 34th Street-Penn Station and 125th Street, via Fulton Local/Washington Heights Local.

(B): Suspended.

(C): Suspended.

(D): No service b/w 42nd Street-Bryant Park and 125th Street or 145th Street.

(1): No service b/w 96th Street and South Ferry.

(2)(3): Via 7th Avenue Local, bypassing 66th Street, 59th Street & 50th Street.

Unplanned:

From South:

(A): All trains rerouted via the (E) line to Queens Plaza or Forest Hills-71st Avenue.

(B)(D): All trains rerouted via the (F) line to either Forest Hills-71st Avenue or Jamaica-179th Street.

(C): All trains rerouted via the (E) line to Queens Plaza or Forest Hills-71st Avenue.

(M): All trains terminate at Chambers Street or Essex Street.

(1): All trains bypass 66th Street, 59th Street, and 50th Street.

NOTE: Seems a bit foam-ish, but it'll have to be done in order to not clog up the whole line (at least not as much as it already is).

From North:

(A)(B)(C)(D): All trains terminate at 125th Street.

(1): All trains bypass 66th Street, 59th Street, and 50th Street.

Trains beyond points specified stop and stay ASAP until situation is resolved.

This assumes there is still power at 72nd Street AND when this happens, the Montauge Street tunnel is fixed:

(A) operates as follows:

207th Street-125th Street in Manhattan (terminating on northbound express track as much as possible but operating local south of 168th Street)

125th-72nd Street in Manhattan on a LIMITED basis using both levels in the following manner:

Wrong-railing on express tracks between 125th and 72nd Street

Running in correct direction on local tracks between 125th and 72nd Street

Utica Avenue, Brooklyn to Far Rockaway OR Rockaway Park, Queens (replaces the Rockaway Park shuttle along that route).

Shuttle buses operate between 125th Street and 34th Street-8th Avenue, operating via Broadway and 7th Avenue south of Columbus Circle to 34th Street-6th Avenue and then to 8th Avenue.going downtown and then uptown via 8th Avenue and Central Park west.

(B) operates at all times during the Columbus Circle shutdown between 42nd Street-6th Avenue, Manhattan and Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.

(C) runs 34th Street-Penn Station, Manhattan-Lefferts Boulevard, Queens (replaces the (A) on the Lefferts branch).

(D) operates as follows:

205th Street, Bronx-145th Street, Manhattan

Coney Island, Brooklyn via the Broadway Line to 57th Street-7th Avenue, Manhattan (via the (N) after Pacifc Street).

(E) operates as normal and is unaffected by this.

(N) operates via the (R) between Prince Street, Manhattan and Pacific Street, Brooklyn.

Give the man a break you are making this sound like its real life!

What if the Rockaway Branch had never been acquired (or could not be repaired) and the current A schedule needed to be maintained?

Uhm terminate the (A) at Lefferts Blvd and Euclid Av, send a few down the (F) to Church Av if necessary.

Have to also add, the idea of losing an entire fleet of cars is not impossible. Between hitherto undiscovered mechanical issues (Flixible, anybody?) and natural disasters (let's say a barn flooded), it is not unforseeable and the tactical planning is pretty entertaining. If the city lost more than 25 8-car B Div sets, you'd probably be looking at running IRT sets with quickly-assembled platform extenders to make up for the difference in rush hour service.

Fire damage necessitates the closure of Barclays Center and the surrounding area. The building fire also burst some underground gas lines which causes the closure of the Atlantic Av & DeKalb Av subway stations due to tunnel & station structural damage.

Reroute (B)(D)(N)(Q)(R)(2)(3)(4)(5) accordingly. These stations will be closed from today (11/4) until the day after Christmas.

For this, I assume Montauge is NOT in operation either.

(B) runs Bedford Park Boulevard or 145th Street to EITHER 2nd Avenue (F) OR Chambers Street (E) station (alternating trains)

Single track shuttle operates between Broadway-Lafayette and Grand Street.

(D) is re-routed via the (F) after West 4th Street to Coney Island (express Jay Street-Church Avenue and peak direction express Church Avenue-Avenue X) and then through via regular route to 36th Street-4th Avenue.

(F) also runs through Coney Island via West End to New Urecht Avenue, where it terminates.

Where there is not enough capcity at Broadway-Lafayette to run via 6th Avenue, (M) is re-routed via old route to Chambers Street.

(N) runs normal overnight (when Montauge Street tunnel is open) route to Whitehall Street ONLY at ALL TIMES.

(Q) runs as a special Brighton-Sea Beach shuttle operating between Prospect Park and 36th Street-4th Avenue through Coney Island at ALL TIMES.

Brooklyn (R) runs 36th Street-4th Avenue-95th Street, Brooklyn, otherwise, line operates seven days a week as it currently does on weekdays.

Special shuttle train operates Court Street and Jay Street-Metrotech at ALL TIMES.

(2) operates in two sections:

241st Street-Chambers Street (local south of 34th Street), then via (1) to South Ferry before turning north.

Eastern Parkway-Flatbush Avenue

(3) operates in two sections:

148th Street-14th Street (Times Square late nights)

Eastern Parkway-New Lots Avenue at ALL TIMES.

Single track shuttle trains operate between Chambers Street (express tracks) and Borough Hall (2)(3) station.

(4) and (5) both operate regular routes to Borough Hall ONLY, however, select (5) trains run to Bowling Green and then operate via the loop and stop at the South Ferry (1) station (trains are marked "South Ferry").  Evenings and weekends, all (5) trains are extended to Borough Hall.

Shuttle buses operate in Brooklyn as follows (all shuttle buses stop at Jay Street-Metrotech BMT/IND Station, Hoyt-Schermerhorn IND Station, Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center Station and Lafayette Avenue IND Station):

Court Street IRT/BMT Station and Prospect Park BMT Station with stops at all IRT and BMT stations in between along the IRT and Brighton lines.

Court Street IRT/BMT Station and 36th Street-4th Avenue with stops at all 4th Avenue line stations.

Riders are asked to use 6th & 8th Avenue line trains between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

(B) runs Bedford Park Boulevard or 145th Street to EITHER 2nd Avenue (F) OR Chambers Street (E) station (alternating trains) Why make another train run via 8 Avenue? You're clogging the line.

The F might be overloaded and constant switching at West 4 St would back up the line. Not to mention switching north of Bergen St from exp to local would also back things up. You love bottlenecks don't you? There's no need for Culver express.

(F) also runs through Coney Island via West End to New Urecht Avenue, where it terminates. This makes absolutely no sense.

Why?

You were actually doing really good with this one up until that point. Can Borough Hall even handle both the 4 and 5 with just one double x-over to turn back with?

Shuttle buses operate in Brooklyn as follows (all shuttle buses stop at Jay Street-Metrotech BMT/IND Station, Hoyt-Schermerhorn IND Station, Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center Station and Lafayette Avenue IND Station):

Court Street IRT/BMT Station and Prospect Park BMT Station with stops at all IRT and BMT stations in between along the IRT and Brighton lines.

Lord help me, my replies are in red and I've done all I can do.  <_<

I'm trying to keep as much service running as possible.  Okay, maybe not have a Culver Express, but you also have the (G) running on the Culver Local, so that was why I have the (D) as a Culver Express during this period.

The other idea is during this period is to make Coney Island exclusively a through station, hence, having both the (D) and (F) run through Coney Island to terminals on the West End line (and New Urecht is a transfer point between the normal Sea Beach and West End lines, hence my having the (F) terminate there).

The shuttle between Court Street and Jay-Street Metrotech preserves transfers (albeit making two transfers) between the IRT and IND lines (and in this case, the (D) running with the (F) ).

As for having (5) trains NOT going to Brooklyn stop on the loop at the (1) station at South Ferry, that has to do with there only one set of crossovers into Borough Hall, making it difficult, especially during peak periods to run all of the (5) trains into Brooklyn, and not wanting to have to terminating them at Bowling Green is why I would have them make the stop at the (1) station at South Ferry during this period.

The Montague Street tunnel is supposed to re-open, but as it turns out, there is a major issue close to the Whitehall Streeet station that makes the portion of the tunnel past where the Nassau Street access is makes it so trains using Montague can only run via the Nassau Street line.

At the same time, the North side of the Manhattan Bridge is out due several previously unforseeable cracks in the tracks that must be repaired as well as other issues that need to be repaired, but the south (Broadway side) is in operation and can be used.

These both will take five weeks to correct before both are back in normal operation.  Adjust accordingly.
