Subway - What If?

VWM

Ooo... This one's gonna be tricky.

All of the subway workers (plus the ones for the Staten Island Railway) have gone on strike. How would De Balsio and Pendergast, and New York City respond to this?

- Shuttle buses replace all routes (lol, I can imagine all the hate if this happens)

- Travelers in Queens strongly urged to take LIRR due to overcrowding on buses.

- Increased LIRR service.

- Travelers in Bronx strongly urged to take MNR due to bus overcrowding.

- Increased MNR service.

- Also, increased Express bus service.

A water main break at Houston and Lafayette Streets has cause big-time problems as BOTH the Lexington Avenue AND 6th Avenue Lines are affected by this.  The water main break caused structural problems in the area that will require a 6-8 week shutdown of both lines in the area.

(B) no service

(C) additional service between 168 St or 145 St and World Trade Center

(D) will operate between Norwood and W 4 Street and between 57 St and Coney Island via West End (maybe labeled (W) due to B'way service)

(F) Some trains via Cranberry, some trains will be replaced by the (G) in Brooklyn and Queens

(G) service will be extended to both Jamaica-179 St via Queens Blvd Exp and to Coney Island via Culver to replace lost (F) trains.

<Q> service will operate between Prospect Park and Brighton Beach to replace the (B) [stops at the westernmost track in Prospect Park]

M15, M15 SBS, M101, M102, M103: Additional buses will operate for riders from East Side Manhattan

The has not taken into account the current closure of the Montague Street tunnels.

It's very difficult to handle the Lexington line terminating at 42nd Street because every train has to terminate on the uptown platform as you can only switch to the uptown tracks when heading downtown.

Hope there aren't any mistakes like last time when I labeled the (G) as the (Q)

Well since nobody replied for like 12 hours...

A medium level track fire spread has caused the entire Broadway Junction station to be evacuated and closed until the fire is extinguished. How would you reroute the (A)(C)(J)(Z)(L) ?

-No (A) 's between Utica and Euclid. Both sections are local entirely.

-No (C) 's entirely.

-No (J) 's between Myrtle-B'way and Cypress Hills. Skip-stop service suspended entirely. Peak-direction express service between Marcy and Myrtle-B'way is unaffected, however.

-No (L) 's between Wyckoff and Canarsie.

One BIG Mess for sure:

Shuttle buses operate as follows:
Express shuttle from Rockaway Parkway (A) to Sutphin Boulevard (E)(J) LIRR Station (only stops)
Atlantic Avenue (L) to Myrtle-Wyckoff (L)(M) station
(A) shuttle bus between Euclid Avenue and Utica Avenue
(J) shuttle between Crescent Street and Myrtle Avenue

(A) operates in two sections:
207th Street, Manhattan and Utica Avenue, Brooklyn (local in Brooklyn between High Street and Utica Avenue)
Euclid Avenue, Brooklyn and (alternating trains) Lefferts Boulevard and Far Rockaway, Brooklyn
Rockaway Park (S) is extended to Euclid Avenue and also terminates there.

(C) operates in Manhattan ONLY between 168th Street and EITHER Chambers Street (E) OR  2nd Avenue (F) station (alternating trains).

(J) operates in two sections:
Jamaica Center, Queens and Crescent Street, Brooklyn
Metropolitan Avenue (M) station, Queens and Broad Street, Manhattan

(L) operates in two sections:

(A) operates in two sections: Inwood - Utica Avenue (via 8 Av Exp, Fulton Lcl) and Euclid Av - Lefferts/Far Rockaway

(C) operates between 168 St and 2 Av (F) via 8 Av Local

(J) operates in two sections: Broad St and Myrtle Av-Broadway and Cypress Hills (or Crescent St) to Jamaica Center

(L) operates in two sections: 14 St-8 Av to Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs and free shuttle service between Livonia Av and Rockaway Parkway. (People will be encouraged to ride the (3) to Junius St and use the overpass between Junius St and Livonia Av. To avoid extra fares, the (L) shuttle will be free.

MetroCards will be accepted for LIRR rides between Penn Station/Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica/Far Rockaway

Select buses that connect the western and the eastern sections of lines (such as B60 or B13) will offer additional service. Shuttle buses are also active, but will not service Broadway Junction directly.

A fire alarm in the Fulton Street complex led to the station being evatuated and closed, so service changes have to be made.

Okay, let's give this a try:

(2): Two sections, 241st St-South Ferry and Nevins St-Flatbush Ave.

(3): No service south of Times Square.

(4): Two sections: Woodlawn-Brooklyn Bridge* and Borough Hall-New Lots Ave.

(5): No service south of E 180 St. Transfer to the (2).

(A): Local service. Runs via the (F) between West 4th and Jay St-MetroTech.

(C): No service.

(J): No service south of Chambers St.

(Z): No service.

Expect severe delays. Use the (A), (B), (D), (F), (N), (Q), or (R) access to transfer points in Brooklyn.

* There's a one-way crossover that trains could reverse onto south of the station, so as not to clog the City Hall loop. If there's some technical reason they can't actually use that, Woodlawn-Grand Central instead.

A fire alarm in the Fulton Street complex led to the station being evatuated and closed, so service changes have to be made.

As I would do it:

(A) runs as follows:

Lefferts Boulevard trains run 207th Street via the (F) to Jay Street-Metrotech and then via regular route (local in Brooklyn)

Far Rockaway branch trains operate in two sections:

207th Street-Chambers Street (A) platform

High Street and Far Rockaway (local in Brooklyn)

(C) runs via the (M) and then (J) after West 4th to the Broadway Junction (J) platform and replaces the (M) after Myrtle Avenue going towards Manhattan (via normal route after West 4th).

Rockaway Park (S) is extended to Broadway Junction and runs express between there and Euclid Avenue.

(J) and (Z) service starts at Chambers Street and runs normal route otherwise.

(M) runs as a Metropolitan-Myrtle Avenue Shuttle ONLY!!

(2) runs in two sections:

White Plains Road-South Ferry (1) station (via the (1) south of Chambers and local south of Times Square)

Wall Street OR Bowling Green (4) station-Flatbush Avenue.

(3) runs Chambers Street-148th Street ONLY!!

Single track shuttles run between Wall Street and Borough Hall (Hoyt Street is CLOSED!!)

(4) runs in two sections:

Woodlawn-Brooklyn Bridge (local south of Grand Central with some northbound trains local to 125th Street)

Wall Street OR Bowling Green-New Lots Avenue (replacing the (3) in Brooklyn)

Special OOS transfer between the (4) at Bowling Green or Wall Street and the (1) at Rector Street or South Ferry AND (R) at Whitehall Street (ask for a block ticket at any of these stations OR at Chambers-Brooklyn Bridge).

(5) runs 42nd Street-Grand Central to Dyre Avenue ONLY!!

You making it sound like the damn building collapsed...you cutting the (M) when it isn't even affected

The idea is that the (A) and (C) are being re-routed that way, so in this case, the (C) would be running to Broadway Junction (J) station so 8th Avenue local riders don't have to switch to half an (A) train (that from Manhattan would be running to Lefferts via the (F) while Far Rockaway runs from High Street with some (A)'s in Manhattan going to Chambers) and possibly make ANOTHER switch later on.  The idea is to limit switches as much as possible to one for those who ride the 8th Avenue line, especially if they are going east of Broadway Junction and going to Far Rockaway for instance.

Oh please. Waiting time on the (A) doubles additionally east of Rockaway Blvd anyway. Do you even realize how many times the High St issue was ignored during incidents like this? The (MTA) still informs riders at that station how to get around anyway. All you're continuously doing is making things more complicated, over-complicating actually, when the simple solution was to suspend the (C) entirely, run the (A) via the (F) and local elsewhere. You can even send some fewer (F) trains over the (G) to limit congestion. I mean really dude.

My plan keeps every station served as much as possible.   I don't ignore High Street as I would do it, and by sending the (C) via the (M) and then (J) to Broadway Junction minimizes having to transfer to one in most cases.

I probably would send a few (F) trains via the (G) and also have the (G) go to 71-Continental to replace the (M) in Queens in this case.

It may seem over-complicating things to you, but to me, I'm trying to keep transfers to a minimum and minimize people being affected as much as possible (and to those who are affecting, reminding them they need to pay attention like the old days and rewarding those who do).

I would reroute trains the following

(2) runs in two sections: Wakefield-241 St - Chambers Street and Atlantic Av - Flatbush Av

(3) runs between 148 St and Times Square only

(4) runs in two sections: Woodlawn - City Hall and Wall St (using the switches north of Bowling Green) - New Lots Av, local from Franklin Av to New Lots Av.

(5) runs between Dyre Av and E 180 St only.

(6) runs regular service, although delays should be expected due to the (4) trains calling City Hall at the local tracks and using the loop.

(A) runs via the (F) Rutgers St Tunnel, runs local in Brooklyn

(C) Some trains run between 168 St and 2 Av only, some between 168 St and Euclid Av via the (F) Rutgers St Tunnel

(J)(Z) terminate at Chambers Street.

Next:

Montauge Street (including the connection to the Nassau Street line) has reopened, but major problems around Myrtle Avenue in both directions have halted ALL service on The Manhattan Bridge.  Only the tunnel can be used to get to Manhattan.

In addition, the loop at South Ferry somehow got switched to where trains coming from the 7th Avenue line can ONLY go to the Lexington Avenue line going uptown and can not access 7th Avenue going back (the "new" SF station is still not available as it continues to be rebuilt from Sandy damage).

Also at the same time, the Rutgers Street tunnel has broken rails that forces it to be shut down (though York Street and East Broadway on each end of the tunnel can be used).

Wait, wait. The (2) and (3) don't go via the loop, so they are unaffected, only the (1)? If so,

(F) runs via the Cranberry and terminates at Jay Street - Metrotech

(M) runs via 6th Avenue via the Montague Street tunnel, and West End, terminating at Bay Parkway.

(2) via Lexington Avenue

(3) terminates at Wall Street
