Subway - What If?

the (F) line is impassable too. Only the (B) and (D) are unaffected

Actually, if you look at this track map (http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/caption.pl?/img/trackmap/detail-47-63.png) you can see the express track can be used to access the (F) track to 57th Street-6th Avenue and the 63rd Street line.  That connection has NO interaction with the junction you are talking about, so the (F) and (M) can switch to the express track AND go to the (F) track without dealing with the junction in that situation (The (B) when it terminated at 57th/6th could do this as well)..

I HATE to say this, but Wally is correct. 63rd Street connects to the express track as well. How do you think the (B)(Q) went up there in the 80s and 90s? There would be a switching nightmare at 34th Street, but it's easy enough to have locals run on the express track for 20 blocks.

Definitely a nightmare, but sending a few (F) s via the (G) can solve that.

I'm going to for this purpose say this is far enough away from Essex Street that trains can run through there, but not stop:

Rush hours:

(J)(M) and (Z) all skip Essex Street.  Special block transfer at Park Row to/from the M15 and M101, M102 and M103 and at Broadway/Lafayette to/from the M1 and M6.

(F) runs as follows:

Coney Island trains run via the (G) between Coney Island and Court Square and stop at Queens Plaza before resuming normal service.

Manhattan trains start at 2nd Avenue OR Chambers Street (E) station.

ALL (F) trains run express to 179th Street.

(G)(M) and (R) trains are ALL extended to 179th Street and make all local stops.

Weekend:

(D) stops at 14th & 23rd Streets

(F) runs via the Cranberry Street tunnel between Jay Street and West 4th

(J) and (M) skip Essex Street

(M) is extended to West 4th Street and uses the express tunnel to terminate.

I would not sent (F) via (G) stations stops because it can properly open only 6-4 cars which could be dangerous.

I remember when I got on 1st car of Coney Island-bound (F) on R46, some homeless feces were on 1st car, so after good samitran told the train operator, he closed 1st car and we were transfer to 2nd car. I helped T/O that 1st car was closed until my stop 57th St-6th Av.

???? If nonpeak is a weekend, you have to put the (M) somewhere else, because it certainly can't turn around at Essex

Also why does the (M) go to Chambers during the week?

An earthquake (similar from what went down in the hit anime series "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0") hits New York thanks to the Manhattaville Fault*. It is 8.0 on the richter scale. Its goes as far as Philadelphia, and parts of Delaware. How will the earthquake effect transportation in New York City?

(EXTRA CREDIT)

How would PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson), NJTransit, and SEPTA (Southeast Pennsylvania Transit Authority) deal with the aftermath?

Put in your best response below!

*Oh, and if you are curious where the epicenter, it is in West Harlem Piers Park.

An 8.0 with an epicenter in Manhattan would basically destroy the whole city

there is a switching problem at the Jay St-Metrotech station and it must be shut down for repairs. no trains can pass through

affected (A)(C)(F)

Here goes:

(A) runs as follows:

Manhattan: Chambers Street ( (A) platform) to 207th Street

Single track shuttle operates between Chambers Street, Manhattan and High Street, Brooklyn

Brooklyn-Queens trains run a follows:

Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets and Lefferts Boulevard (local between Hoyt Street and Euclid Avenue)

(NOTE: The Transit Museum is temporarily closed and at least one track is cleared of museum cars so trains can use the Court Street Transit Museum Station to turn trains while the switches at Jay Street are fixed)

Broadway Junction and Far Rockaway (express between Broadway Junction and Euclid Avenue.

Rockaway Park (S) is extended to Broadway Junction and operates express between Broadway Junction and Euclid Avenue AND skips ALL stops between 80th Street-Hudson Street and Broad Channel in the peak direction.

(C) runs via the (M) and then (J) between West 4th Street and the Broadway Junction (J) platform, where it terminates.

(F) runs York Street, Brooklyn to 179th Street, Queens (some (F) trains terminate at Delancey Street or 2nd Avenue)

(G) runs Coney Island-179th Street (extended from Church Avenue and Court Square) and replaces the (F) in most of Brooklyn.

Shuttle buses operate between High Street-Brooklyn Bridge and via the regular (A) route to Utica Avenue (with stops at York Street (F) station, Jay Street-Metrotech, Hoyt-Schemerhorn and the Atlantic Terminal before assuming the normal (A) route.  Passengers are encouraged where possible to use the other lines to the Atlantic Terminal OR use the (C) between Manhattan and Broadway Junction if traveling into eastern Brooklyn and Queens.

There are also single-track shuttles between Hoyt-Schermehorn and Jay Street (on both regular (A) tracks) so that passengers can get to the Metrotech transfer to the (R) there.

wait, trains can access the transit museum tracks?

wait, trains can access the transit museum tracks?

Yes, trains can if there are no other trains on them.  There is a crossover there that dates back to when the Transit Museum station was an actual terminal for the Fulton Street locals (which is why Hoyt-Schermerhorn is a six-track, four-platform station).

The idea here is this is an emergency situation and it potentially minimizes the need for shuttle buses in such an emergency.
