Subway - What If?

Next up:

Staying on Queens Boulevard, a broken rail on the north/eastbound track just past the exit of the former 23rd-Ely (now Court Square) (E)(M) station only allows trains FROM the QB line to come in (coming from Manhattan, trains either have to use the south/westbound track between Court Square and Queens Boulevard and go back to the eastbound track OR terminate at Court Square).  At the same time, the connections to Jamaica Yard are such that no trains can terminate at 71st-Continental (trains can stop there but MUST continue on to another spot to terminate).

My bad on back-to-back posts, I had intended to delete this one and add it to the prior post.

(E) : Most trains go via the (F) line between Jackson Heights and West 4th Street with delays. Some terminate at Court Square. Some trains go normal route sharing a track at Court Square and Queens Plaza with delays.

(F) : Delayed.

(M) : Trains run via the (F) between Rockefeller Center and 36th Street with delays. Runs up to 179th Street. Some trains run via the (J) to Chambers Street.

(R) : Runs to 179th Street.

Multiple broken rails on the tracks leading from the DeKalb Avenue station towards the Manhattan Bridge tracks (In this case, it was discovered after one rail broke that there several other severely cracked portions of rail that needed to be replaced) mean ONLY the bypass tracks that skip the DeKalb Avenue Station and the tracks at DeKalb that lead into the Montauge tunnel (which by this point had been reopened after all work was completed) can be used for trains to and from Manahattan.  Trains can terminate on the "bridge" side of the tracks coming from other spots in Brooklyn that would normally be heading to and from Manhattan (as the "bridge" tracks in the station itself are not affected by this) or that part of the "bridge" tracks can be used for shuttle trains if needed.

This is a long-term situation that will take six to eight weeks to fix properly.

(N) via Bridge and express to 57th and terminate

(Q) via tunnel, then local to astoria

(W) Brighton Beach, via express, via tunnel, local to Astoria

(B) 9th Ave. to uptown via 4th Ave. express

The shuttle to DeKalb wouldn't be needed, nor possible. That would only be for a total bridge shutdown, because trains would have to relay by wrongrailing on the bypass to Pacific. And I doubt the bypass is reversed signaled, so it would really only work on a long term shutdown where reverse signals would be invested inout of the utter desperation of such a scenario.

Signaling and switching at DeKalb Avenue has gone haywire. A (D) train passed a green light when there was an (N) train in front of it, then it nearly crashed. A study showed that there has been short-circuiting, and the entire section at DeKalb Avenue had to be closed down. No service available anywhere where there are switches at DeKalb Avenue. Services affected: (B)(D)(N)(Q)(R).

P.S. this is assuming that the Montague Tube is fixed, but DeKalb avenue is still impassible.

This assumes the work will take a few weeks:and no trains can pass DeKalb Avenue whatsoever:

Alternate (B) trains run from Bedford Park Boulevard or 145th Street to EITHER the Chambers Street (E) or 2nd Avenue (F) station.

(D) runs from 36th Street in Brooklyn to Coney Island (stopping on the (F) platform at Coney Island) and then runs via the (F) between Coney Island and West 4th Street.

Some (M) trains terminate at Essex Street or are diverted to the Chambers Street (J) station during rush hours as the (D) and (F) have priority at that time.

(N) runs via the tunnel between Jay Street-Metrotech and Ditmars Boulevard-Astoria ONLY

(R) runs in two sections:

Between Jay Street-Metrotech and 71st-Continental except overnights

Pacific Street-95th Street Brooklyn at all time

Some weekday Queens-bound (N) and (R) trains start at Whitehall Street or Canal Street (tunnel level platform) and some downtown trains terminate at those respective stations.  There is extra (N) service to replace the (Q) in Manhattan and Queens.

(Q) runs as a loop line from Prospect Park-Coney Island (stopping on the (N) platform) and then continuing via the (N) to Pacific Street.

(B): No service b/w West 4th Street & Brooklyn.

(D): No service b/w West 4th Street & 36th Street. Select trains in Manhattan terminate at Grand Street.

(N): No service b/w Jay Street-Metrotech and 59th Street.

(Q): No service b/w Queens and Atlantic Avenue (by single-tracking). Select trains terminate at Prospect Park.

(R): No service b/w Jay Street-Metrotech and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center. Northbound trains run local-Southbound trains run express b/w 36th Street & Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center.

Switch from Dekalb Bypass to Brighton is malfunctioning (during the rush hour)

At the same time, Grand Street is closed because of a fire inside the station (nobody got hurt).

Reroute: (B)(D)(Q) .

There is no switch from DeKalb Bypass to Brighton.

Forgot to add:

(F) also runs through Coney Island and runs with the (D) to Bay Parkway, where it teminates (Coney Island is a through station for this purpose).

I'm assuming for this the switches directly next to DeKalb can't be used, but the switches between Pacific Street (now Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center) and DeKalb CAN be used to turn trains as they are not affected by this.

(B) suspended entirely.

(D) runs local in Manhattan and the Bronx.

(D) also runs via the (F) from West 4 to Coney Island.

(Q) runs via the (N) bypassing DeKalb.

Not sure on my part of suspending the (B) though. But this is how I would assume they would handle it if something like that ever happened.

Because of a new IndyCar race in Downtown New York, all streets are closed south of Chambers Street, and all stations too.

Lines affected. From Thursday morning to Sunday night

(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(A)(C)(E)(J)(R)(Z)

Easy, just bypass those stations without stopping. Chambers would be the last revenue stop on the (1) and (J)(Z) and (1) trains would run lite through the loop while (J)(Z) turn on the platform or use the relay.. You gotta question what kind of mayor would let an event like this happen at the time of day that the (Z) is still running.

I say the (1) terminates at Chambers St, the (2)(3) terminate at 14th St. the (4)(5) terminate at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall on the Express track, the (2)(4) brooklyn local service is between Borough Hall and Flatbush Ave/New Lots Ave. The (A)(C)(E) run on the (F) line between West 4th & Jay St. (E) terminates at 2nd Ave. (J)(Z) terminate at Chambers St. And the (R) uses the Manhattan Bridge.

Because of a new IndyCar race in Downtown New York, all streets are closed south of Chambers Street, and all stations too.

From Thursday morning to Sunday night

This would be very hard to do because the Stock Market has to remain open on Thursday and Friday and traders have to be there in some instances.

(1) is diverted to the Broadway Express line south of Chambers and runs to the Utica Avenue (4) platform (Thursday and Friday between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM) OR the Atlantic Avenue (4)(5) platform in Brooklyn (other times).

All Broadway-7th Avenue trains run non-stop between Chambers Street in Manhattan and Clark Street in Brooklyn.

All Lexington Avenue trains continuing south of Brooklyn Bridge run non-stop between there and Borough Hall in Brooklyn.

(5) runs local after 9:00 PM Thursday and Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday, terminating with the (6) at Brooklyn Bridge during those hours.

8th Avenue line operates as follows:

Thursday and Friday 6:00 AM-10:00 PM:

(A) and (C) run express 59th-Canal Street and operate non-stop between Canal Street and High Street-Brooklyn Bridge

(E) terminates at Canal Street and runs light to Chambers-WTC.

All other times:

(A) operates normally except for running non-stop between Canal Street and High Street-Brooklyn Bridge

(B) is running 145th Street-2nd Avenue in Manhattan at all times (except overnights), replacing the (C) between 125th and 59th Street.  For 50th Street-8th Avenue from Columbus Circle, take the (B) or (D) to 53rd Street-7th Avenue.

(E) is extended to Euclid Avenue to replace the (C) in Brooklyn and runs non-stop between Canal Street and High Street-Brooklyn Bridge.

(J) and (Z) terminate at Chambers Street at all times.

I think BxM4Woodlawn assumes there is some blockage at those stations.

Due to some wierd reason, Euclid Ave (A, C) is closed and cannot be passed, plus the Cranberry tunnel is closed. Reroute and provide alternative service if needed.

All (A) trains from Manhattan to Brooklyn operate to Broadway Junction ONLY!!  Such runs as follows:

Some (A) trains run via the (F) between West 4th and Jay Street,

Some (A) trains operate in Brooklyn ONLY between Broadway Junction and High Street

ALL (A) trains run LOCAL in Brooklyn

Shuttle buses operate between Broadway Junction and 80th Street in Queens,

Shuttle buses also operate between the Archer Avenue (E) station and Lefferts Boulevard in Queens as passengers for Queens are asked to use the (E) if possible.

(A) trains in Queens operate from 80th Street (turning there and terminating on the Queens-bound platform) to Lefferts Boulevard OR Far Rockaway

Single Track shuttle operates on the Brooklyn-bound track between 80th Street and Grant Avenue

Rockaway Park (S) operates between 80th Street (Rockaway-bound platform) and Rockaway Park

(C) runs via the (M) and then (J) between West 4th and the Broadway Junction (J) station and replaces the (M) between Myrtle Avenue and West 4th Street.

(M) operates as a shuttle between Myrtle and Metropolitan Avenue ONLY!

(A): Runs in 2 sections.

1. Between Inwood-207th St and Broadway Junction, running via (F) between West 4th St & Jay St-MetroTech in both direction. Trains run local south of 42nd St in both direction.

2. Between Grant Av and Lefferts Blvd/Far Rockaway.

(C): Service rerouted over to 2nd Av (F).

For Spring St, please use (1) or late night (2) train.

For Chambers St, please use downtown (2)(3) Chambers St/Park Place or (E) World Trade Center.

For Fulton St, please use (2)(3)(4)(5). On Late Night (4) service is available at Broadway-Lafayette/Bleecker St.

For High St, please use nearby (F) York St or Clark St (2)(3).

(A) runs in two sections:

1. Between 207 and W4, then via (F) to/from Jay and originate/terminate at B'way Junction

2. Between 80 Street and Lefferts/Far Rock.

Both sections are local entirely. The entire (C) route is suspended. Some (F) trains run via Crosstown to avoid congestion at W4 and B'way Lafayette.

Didn't think of having (F) trains go via the (G) since in my version, I have some (A) service only operating in Brooklyn between High Street and Broadway Junction so High is covered.

The (C) to the Broadway Junction (J) platform to me makes sense here because it keeps along Broadway-Brooklyn a one-seat ride to midtown between Myrtle and Essex Street, albeit via 8th Avenue instead of 6th.  The (C) here essentially replaces the (M) except for the one part where the (M) is by itself.

And why do you want to extend the Rock Park shuttle all the way to/from 80 St for....and what up with the singled-tracked shuttle between Grant Av and 80 St....

The single track between Grant and 80th is to keep some people looking for Grant specifically off the shuttle bus (this would be only one train).  I'm assuming here that 80th is the only crossover available, otherwise, the setup would require trains to terminate at 88th and run on the express track to Pitkin to turn.

And as for the Rockaway Park shuttle being extended, the idea is simple: Eliminate having to switch trains there to better streamline service in an emergency.
