R40M retirement and last runs

There are only 53 left

They're going fast. In mid-June there were 91 cars. But the number's still an odd number, which means the R40M/R42 mismatch is still alive and kicking.

I was thinking of the same. Except I was unsure whether or not it is going to happen. It makes perfect sense because the R40s are run with the R42s, so the moves are done quickly. You won't have to dissemble the R40s from the R42s, just so that the R40s could retire first.

They're starting the retirement process already, right?

They been started since January, 4450/51 were the 1st to be taken out but they are museum cars and they are at CCYD with the END signs displaying (A).

Thanks for all the valuable comments. On this note, I would like to know what determines exactly when a particular car/consist is retired? Do they just set a date and kill it on that day, no matter what the condition of the cars were? Is there a specific system that needs to stop working or work really ineffeciently before a car is considered to have given up the ghost? Do they always wait for an unrepairable failure before scrapping and reefing old cars? If R40Ms can donate some of its parts to R42s, then that suggests that the R40s would be retired before they have fallen apart (i.e. major systems are still operable on another line)?

If there is anything rather major that needs to be repaired on a car, then the car generally heads to scrap because the logic is: Why repair it if it's gone by Odtober?

Both the R40M/R42's are going at the same time, I saw a set going to concourse on friday, There are less R40M's in service, I would say around between 50-44 cars left, Each week a R40M/42 and sometimes a bad pair of R32's get sent to storage for reefing. The R40M's will retire before the R42's because there are lees R40M's than R42's and its sad to say that because the R40M's are in better shape but they are both going.

They send R40M/42 consists together to the concorce yard or 207th and if no room pitkin.

Correct

I'd say both the R40s and the R42s will be gone by around late October, and if not, then by the end of the year. There aren't a lot of them around anymore - only about 250 at most. There's no set last date but if there's about 10 or so left and a new R160 set enters service then they will want to pull the last set of the fleet out of service by the end of the week (this was done with the slants).

R40Ms and R42s are not retiring at the same time. But all R40s will be gone by the end of this year, and all R42s will be gone by next.

We shall patiently wait. Who knows, maybe the T/A will pull another crazy scheme for durability.

They are, I've seen R40s and R42s at Concourse. It's been happening already. The R42s at Jamaica are really out of shape. They can't hold up till Quarter 4 of 2010.

R42s stink in every way possible, structurally, mechanically, and cosmetically. i get headaches every time i ride them (thankfully i do not need to do that often). they just keep getting worse and worse as the weeks go by and need to retire now.

on another note, the R32/40M/42s retirement has not been updated in a while. anyone know why is that?

Haha, isn't that what you said about the R44s in being the worse? The bottom line is that all 60s 60 ft SMEEs need to retire ASAP. It's time for NYC to move on!

Well said, you may miss them all you want, but remember all things come and go.

The roofs on the most R42s are really crummy and will not hold that long. They can survive for a few months at the most, but not a year.

Wait, FlushingExpress, don't you avoid R42s?

I really think you're on drugs. You're taking this stuff way too seriously bro. You sound like you know you're stuff but your attitude stinks.

Well, I've had about enough of you that I can take and I'm sure a lot of other people here do too. You look like you need a break from here and I'm going to help you with that. You are now banned.

Harry, you're god! Give him a week or so and he'll be back but he'll watch his tongue from now on, wait and see.

But back to business. I'm not a technician but if what everyone says about the R40Ms are true, they may not see the new year.

I seriously don't want to cross anyone's line here and perhaps Flushingexpress in fact had as bad of experiences with the R44 fleet as I had with some others. What I've stated was out of curiosity, but no offense was intended. Sorry if it caused a confusion. Anyhow, I have enough time tomorrow to perhaps have my last railfanwindow express run on an R32 A train. If anyone would like the video in HD, just search my youtube account.

It's just the simple fact, the R44 are deteriorated, the R40M are not far behind, the R42s are done for, just yank them off. The R32 (well some), are the best in service next to the R46 and R68. If I could I hold the Brightliner a good 2 more years. The R40M and R42 can go, I hate to say it but as much as I love them, they are rolling crap. They will crumble onto the tracks soon. St. Louis cars are just not MTA's forte'. The R40M-R42-R44s are in terrible shape and need to retier. Yet Budd, Pullman, and Westinghouse are still strong and well. I just want those the Louies in the river and get it over with since were getting 160s by the bus load!

I agree. Why didnt SLCC make the cars all stainless steel...did they know back then in the 60s that carbon steel would rust? didnt they do their research?
