Random Thoughts Thread - Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE)

Did you see any N24s east of RFM headed in the opposite direction? What did their ridership look like?

Every other N24 I saw had either a seated load or was SRO. Coming out of the city was a seated load, but lightened up quickly by New Hyde Park. I'd say around 10-12 on the bus from there to RFM, then down to 3-4 (not counting myself) eastward. Getting off at Hicksville was me and only one other passenger.

Perhaps because it was Friday?

Having now ridden all 3 Hicksville-subway routes, all in the eastbound direction, I'd have to say the N24 feels the slowest of them all.

By the way, there was a supervisor at New Hyde Park Rd who made note of the fact that the Clever Devices didn't work. He spoke with the driver in a really heavy accent so I didn't understand most of what he said.

Isn't the sole purpose of that portin for reverse commuting itself. Besides Hicksville is industrial, and has Jericho Quad, the offices at Hicksville, and other jobs. I understand that you have the Nassau Hub, but Hicksville is as industrial. That's a portion of NICE's ridership from Hicksville anyways, other than the LIRR riders.

Jamaica is a busier hub than Hicksville, so the busier buses are coming out of Jamaica in the morning and going to Jamaica in the evening. The amount of reverse commuting service that is in place does get some ridership, better than if it was still just the 78/79 to Mineola. Hicksville is a hub and does serve a lot or ridership, but not as much as Jamaica.

I always thought the N20 was worse, especially in between LIU and Old Westbury.  The non-stop portion doesn't help when these Orions have to struggle up and down hills.

I hate riding the N20. The only thing that route is good for is getting some ZZZs.

Yeah, east of Glen Cove Rd, it is a bit boring, but you get to see some nice forested areas and a horse farm.

Yea, the N24 sucks, that's why most riders going between the Mall and Queens opt for the N22

Yes, I heard this on a bus recently and it was very annoying.  It actually sounded louder in the bus than outside, every time the driver used his turn signal to exit the roadway for a stop and re enter the roadway the "warning" sounded.

I only watched that video once and it annoyed me.

Yeah NJT is putting them on every bus too as part of the Clever Device rollout. "Caution bus is turning" then the same thing in Spanish and it's just as annoying. Could be a similar announcement coming our way on the new 1800s since they have the newer Clever Devices just like NJT, even have the same stop request announcement. This sounds like an older announcement, which makes sense since everything up to the recent 3Gs have the older Clever Devices.

People will drive down the wrong side of the road for up to a quarter mile just to get around a bus. That system does nothing.

Yeah, just recently today a car driver went on the wrong direction of Queens Boulevard yes I said it just to avoid an express bus coming that was going to merge onto Woodhaven Boulevard. The nerve with people these days.

Little off-topic

I remember when it was during MTA had LIB year, I was on MTA Bus Q10 LTD going north on two-way street near Kew Garden, there was one crazy driver DROVE ON WRONG SIDE OF STREET FOR FEW BLOCKS AND TURN LEFT ON RED LIGHT.

I also remember when I was recording TSP on Co-Op City-bound +Bx12+, while bus was waiting for TSP, there was one monster truck driver drove like maniac and jump red light at 10th Av.

There was an article somebody posted a while back, talking about how they were trying this somewhere (I think it was Portland, or maybe Seattle or something), and that was one of the issues: That it would announce that even when the bus wasn't actually turning (just merging into traffic).

I stumbled upon a NICE driver's YouTube channel today, name: Michael Harris. Seems he worked under Long Island Bus and is still a driver for Nassau County. Anyway, you can see in his videos what the break room looks like at Mitchel Field:

Also, anyone ever get a front view of an Orion V on the N58? I think he was actually holding the phone to the wheel while driving.

LMFAO!

Go to 511, say another region, choose the Hudson Valley/Catskills Region, then say Public Transportation, then say Delaware County. They give you a list of options, including NICE Bus. If you say NICE Bus, it redirects to NICE Bus (Long Island).

Guess that's why NICE wastes money on unecessary routes!

What does the redirect to NICE bus on 511 have to do with NICE wasting money on unnecessary routes?

#511 don't work for us because automated machine cannot understand what my mom or I say.

You can use the keypad you know?
