R188 Discussion Thread

In my experience R62A's are quite cool in the summer, if anything more consistently than on the R142's.

In my experience the R62As can be hit or miss with the A/C. I don't think I've ever gotten on an R142 during the summer where it wasn't freezing inside.

You also have to take into consideration where you're standing. If you're under the blowers of course you're going to feel it more than if you're by the car ends.

Im not to familiar how they do things. Last time I checked. I thought they were broke. They are geting new buses and now new cars??? Can someone please enlighten me? I believe that the R62A's from the 7 run fine. They line runs frequently though. I just feel that those 87 Million can be used to finally complete the 2ed Ave subway or help finish it. I just don't think that it is feasable to buy new cars when the ones we have work fine. 2ed Ave Subway is far more important.

haha welcome to corporate america. Why do you think everyone and america is going into extreme debt?

lol, why are you quoting a 2 yr old post? And they will need extra cars when the 7 is extended to 34th st-Javits Center. So it's not a total waste.

The quote just got my attention.  Just had to. There even going to add extra tracks, sort of like a mini yard or what the one has around 103 street I think, to allow for extra service if something happened.

This is primarily a signal project, not a car project. But CBTC needs equipment installed on the cars, and R142A's are better suited for the CBTC equipment, and retrofitting newer cars is more cost-effective as the cost of the retrofit can be amortized over a longer period of time. The majority of R188's are simply converted R142A's.

There will be some new cars as well, because the line is being extended and because service will be a bit more frequent. But the R188's are not replacing any existing cars.

As far as I know, no yard space is being added. The existing Corona Yard, plus the tail tracks south of 34th Street, should be enough.

Which R142 i hope it Bombardier next that 370 cars will be converted to R188 original plan few years ago..  new 103 cars of R188.. That 473 cars of new R188  . 370 conversion cars of R142 will become R188 , 103 new R188 cars... So that it. there 473 conversion of R142/R188 & 506 R142A/R188 cars.. That it.. I know just saying. 126 new cars so call R142A/R188 will run on the 7 line will fail. Try to something new  it fail later.. I probably sure 473 cars of R188 will run 9 cars set . That A+B+B+B+A ( 5 cars set) / A+B+B+A  ( 4 cars set) altogether you get 9 cars set running ..

I just saw some R188 videos today, the new R188's have real cool lighting. I also noticed different colored seats on one of the converted units on one of the vids.

EDIT: The numbers of manufactured R188's are coming close to me.. :P
