Art Vandelay Posted October 27, 2012 Share #876 Posted October 27, 2012 There is no budget to maintain the R42 fleet in the long term. They won't last too much longer. Also, I don't know where the idea that the A division has cars to spare for the B division comes from, but IINM The A division has a smaller spare factor than the B division at the moment.
Grand Concourse Posted October 27, 2012 Share #877 Posted October 27, 2012 Plus the will need some of those spares when it is extended to the Javits Center. If there are any more IRT spares, I wouldn't be surprised some of the singles (1900s range) were used for work trains especially in the summer because they have a/c while the R127/134 do not have a/c.
TheSubwayStation Posted October 27, 2012 Share #878 Posted October 27, 2012 Because the IRT cars leave a gap when they are on the B-division? Duh... He probably doesn't know that the A and B divisions use different width cars.
ttcsubwayfan Posted October 27, 2012 Share #879 Posted October 27, 2012 There is no budget to maintain the R42 fleet in the long term. They won't last too much longer. How long do they have left?
R32 3838 Posted October 28, 2012 Share #880 Posted October 28, 2012 How long do they have left? Most likely after the R32 SMS is over
4P3607 Posted October 28, 2012 Share #881 Posted October 28, 2012 I saw an R32 earlier, id say around 8:00-8:15 PM, passing 135 on the express track going uptown. It was 10 cars, Im pretty sure, also the wasn't late at all since there was another ahead of it and another had come in 135 just after the R32 had passed. Those R42's might go, but not all of them. 207 should have at least 180 cars (thats if they only use 140 for the ). Now I have a question, If they have 82 extra cars, why not make the full length? The really does get packed when its only 8.
Art Vandelay Posted October 28, 2012 Share #882 Posted October 28, 2012 With the C remaining 8 cars after the arrival of the R179s, It is hard to imagine it temporarily being extended to 10 cars for the next two years.

If there was an R32 on the , then thats because the R46's are doing very bad, i saw one at 207th st, it ran like complete crap, thats the only reason why they would be on if an R46 is acting up and if they don't any have spares Edited October 28, 2012 by R32 3838
Dan05979 Posted October 28, 2012 Share #884 Posted October 28, 2012 Pitkin 46's are tired. & poor maintenence. I was in a cab today, so filthy and falling apart.
RollOver Posted October 28, 2012 Share #885 Posted October 28, 2012 (edited) The only reason why the R32s on the and R46s on the have the most poorest breakdown rates is because of pretty obvious reasons as we all know... R32s are the oldest but regardless they are still workhorses and perhaps tired iron ladies having to stay around too long. As for the R46s, the is the longest subway line in the system, it runs 24/7, and one of the most heavily used as Threxx explain in this post. I was naive when I didn't realize it until Threxx pointed all that out... Edited October 28, 2012 by RollOverMyHead
AndrewJC Posted October 28, 2012 Share #886 Posted October 28, 2012 Plus the will need some of those spares when it is extended to the Javits Center. According to the R188 section of the October 2012 CPOC book, "Eight new trains forecasted to be conditionally accepted in time for opening of 7 Line Extension."
4P3607 Posted November 3, 2012 Share #887 Posted November 3, 2012 Earlier I was on the line, when I was on the train at Livonia there was an R42 passing on the other side coming from Canarsie, wonder what it was doing there. Also I was on the going by 121, those R42's sitting there really does make it look like the MTA is running retired trains, they are in really bad condition. Its obvious that the MTA wants to get rid of them, they stored them outside during the hurricane instead of underground protected, and they sent them out to the rockaways to get more rusted when on the . They aren't staying long.

Eric B Posted November 7, 2012 Share #897 Posted November 7, 2012 IS this R42 8 cars? Didn't they undo the change to the signs that allowed then to run 8 cars? (I know after they tried that a couple of years ago, the signs were all messed up, with 8 car markers taped over, and then a new "8" crudely marked over it when they tried to change it back).
