Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advice. Currently i’m in a retail job making decent money obviously minus the stability of MTA. Besides taking a pay cut which I don’t mind, I’m hearing from a few people that their work assignment is crazy. Anyone that can give insight on this? I live in Staten Island. Don’t mind working the crazy hours but getting thrown up into the Bronx every so often would make it a killer commute and maybe not worth the pay cut even for the long term? Thank you all in advance.

I know my list number but where does it tell you how long you have to wait

Nowhere, you gotta figure it out. Looking back, it looks like the last range of people that were sworn in were 42XX and keep in mind the list has been active for 5-6 years.

Hey all hope all is well and safe. I need some advice or another view on this. I took this exam years back, and I'm in year 14 of being a city employee(schools) . I work 182 days a year with summers off , and make almost top pay of what a conductor makes. Now I got the email yesterday to report for conductor, but they also sent out a text to report for bus operator.. I never took that exam. Since we've all took this exam years back I've moved on with my current career I have a pension ,vested now . I'm closer to 40 now, took this exam in 2015-2016 I think, I was in my early 30s. I've always wanted to work for transit but as the years went by and I've gotten older, being sent out all over the city essentially being a rookie (lol) & having odd ball schedules doesn't sound to appealing but damn, being part of a train crew sounds fun as heck! Any advice? Thank you all in advance for your help.

Realistically, it’s best to stay. It’s going to be a lot of years before you can see weekends, holidays or summer vacation. Then however long it takes for you to pick a job with set hours. Commuting is gonna suck since where you start is not always where you go home from. Then you have the pay cut for 5 years. The OT is there though.

If you can leave your DOE job and come back (in which you should within the year), try it out for the fun of it. Just keep in mind that training will take up most of the year, so you won’t have a lot of time being out on your own before you would have to make the decision to stay or not.

I mean sounds like you kinda gotta it made bud. It would be hard for me  to leave somewhere where I’m steady have a pension and summers off to come work a brutal schedule and take a cut. Best of luck.

Hey, so i look at it like this. Do you see yourself working that retail job in the long term, although you are making decent money? Also I understand living in Staten island can be a very hard thing commuting wise.

Thanks for your insight. It is a touch choice, I'm not getting any younger and having brutal schedules doesn't sound to attractive now. If i was in my early to late 20s yea i would not have questioned it, but almost at 40, its tough.

I’m in a similar boat. I live in Staten as well, currently working a comfortable 9-5 making ok money. But I feel long term benefits and pension for the family is really hard to turn down. Not looking forward to the random commutes and hours , but I think it’s a necessary sacrifice

Yea I get that. I just turned 30 and have been at my job for 12 years. Change is going to be tough but necessary for pension and benefits etc . Best of luck with your decision.

They'll throw you around everywhere while you're still new, I live in queens and since I've been out of school car for t/o since October I've never been close to home only 1 time, all other times I'm either at 207 terminal or Bedford Park. Even when I was a c/r from 2019 until my promotion I was thrown everywhere. As time progresses you'll gain senority and get to pick a job. I have my c/r classmates who've been out since 2019 and still haven't picked a job yet...

Out of curiosity how has the transition from conductor to operator been ?

i would stay, you won't see summer off until another 15+ years. And at this time, conductors are moving up very slowly. I have friends who started almost 4 years ago, basically the beginning of this list and they still can't pick anything and are on extra extra list. You'd have to work 5 years for top pay as a conductor and it'd take 10 years to be vested at 50%.

Hey, I see a lot of people questioning if they should jump on this opportunity because they are already at another position. I think you most definitely have to weigh the pros and cons. You have benefits, overtime, can easily hit $100,000 annually once you reach top pay and a full pension. Consider the costs of health insurance. I believe your wife and kids can be covered in transits health benefits plan, correct me if I'm wrong. You also have job security. For someone like myself who has been through tough times I want to make sure my job will be there tomorrow. Job security is of the utmost importance to me.

For the gentleman working for the B.O.E I believe you mentioned you are older, have summers off, are deep into your pension and you like it. If your job is secure, like iron clad, maybe I'd stay.

for the gentleman in retail, now unless you're a manager or u work commission, it doesn't matter, I'd bounce. The only plus I see is if you have some transferable bookkeeping skills. Stay in retail?! No thanks, gimme the homeless and pissed of New Yorkers any day. This is nyc. It's all about the money and being able to afford to live here and provide for your family. Out of pocket health insurance is crazy expensive plus mta has more job security. So what if I gotta work far and crazy hours, we been waiting 7 years for this opportunity.

as for me, someone can take my spot. Literally Just got offered an analyst position yesterday with a start up and the benefits are better than MTA's. I would work remote, so I save money on gas, food and don't have to get up any earlier for my commute. Plus I was a doorman for 9 years. I'm never, ever answering to someone again, have a Shitty schedule, or work weekends. That's a dub. I worked hard and studied hard to get here, with no college degree. Corporate is much easier to deal with than a bunch of pri*cvs who feel entitled or having to go through hoops and bounds for vacation and where everything is based on seniority. No thanks. Unlimited PTO was the icing on the cake.

So I called and she said basically for medical they are up to people in the 44xx range. And since I'm 48xx they'll call me back to redo pre employment process and then proceed with medical.
