Around the Horn Posted November 8, 2015 Share #426 Posted November 8, 2015 that person who pointed was me. It was really annoying when that R62A started going toward Hudson Yards. Oh really? Thanks!

MHV9218 Posted November 8, 2015 Share #428 Posted November 8, 2015 Picked these two up. The small sticker is actually much older than the other one...probably mid-70s, way before the newer 'riding between' stickers. The TA decal isn't in the greatest shape but I had to go for it--big thing, about 18" around, and one of my all-time favorite logos from any cars. Only showed up on the new SMEE fleet in the 1950s, some maps and documents in the 60s, and the R38 GOH in the late 80s.
Around the Horn Posted November 9, 2015 Share #429 Posted November 9, 2015 Loving the NYCTA decal... I still want the R143/160 to have this decal on the front instead of that boring "MTA New York City Subway' one they have now...
RollOver Posted November 9, 2015 Share #430 Posted November 9, 2015 I don't know, I kinda like the new one more than the old one lol.

MHV9218 Posted November 10, 2015 Share #432 Posted November 10, 2015 Love that psychedelic '68 timetable, great look to it. Those 90s maps are also nice to have, often overlooked among city subway maps. Loving the NYCTA decal... I still want the R143/160 to have this decal on the front instead of that boring "MTA New York City Subway' one they have now... I'd support that too. My all-time favorite is the "TA" logo found on 9306 and the mid-60s cars. After that, probably the one in the post, then the "M" logo of the 70s, and lastly the boring pacman logo. The "M" logo without color (mid-80s and 90s) was also fairly boring.

MHV9218 Posted December 14, 2015 Share #434 Posted December 14, 2015 A little Surface memorabilia for this thread. Note the handcut lettering that mixes Helvetica and Akzidenz Grotesk. Dated 3/28/1977.
SmallParkShuttle Posted December 23, 2015 Share #435 Posted December 23, 2015 A project I've been working on for family who used to live in the City. I've got to get rid of the white from the matboard on the bottom sign.
Javier Posted December 23, 2015 Share #436 Posted December 23, 2015 Are those the full roll signs or just parts?
SmallParkShuttle Posted December 23, 2015 Share #437 Posted December 23, 2015 Just the parts. A rollsign cover with the sections matted and 'framed' behind the plexiglass. I made a box for another full frame and cover, which is in the closet until I can find space to hang it. The rolls for the R30s/32s/38s (as it's printed on the roll) have the JFK Express on it. I've seen at least one roll that has "Train to the Plane" printed next to the . I posted this earlier, but it seems that post was one of the lost ones. I had this on my wall before we moved to MD:
MHV9218 Posted December 26, 2015 Share #438 Posted December 26, 2015 Group photo of the Vignellis--favorite subway maps (diagrams) the city has ever had: 1972 first edition (KK): in-car map 1972 first edition (KK, bullet cover): pocket map 1972 first edition (KK, line cover): pocket map 1972 second edition (K, bullet cover): pocket map 1974 (bullet cover): pocket map I've got a 1977 in lousy shape elsewhere, but thought I'd get the good ones together for this shot. Also, if any of you folks remember that Bedford Park sign I had...I got to work this weekend on removing that decal and restoring the original Vignelli enamel underneath. Best $40 I've ever spent: F express service to Coney Island, cir. 1968-1972

MHV9218 Posted December 27, 2015 Share #440 Posted December 27, 2015 Where are you getting those old signs from?? I usually find them on eBay, often underneath newer (cheaper) signs or such. I'm working on tracking down some local signs, however.

Javier Posted January 1, 2016 Share #442 Posted January 1, 2016 Question MHV, if I wanted to have a custom sign printed like this: to Flushing Main St all times except late nights. Other times to 111 St. During rush hours, some 34 St bound trains terminate at Times Sq - 42 St. And I would like it to be based on that current sign you restored, how much would it cost?
MHV9218 Posted January 1, 2016 Share #443 Posted January 1, 2016 (edited) Good job with the restoration MHV. Thank you sir. Question MHV, if I wanted to have a custom sign printed like this: to Flushing Main St all times except late nights. Other times to 111 St. During rush hours, some 34 St bound trains terminate at Times Sq - 42 St. And I would like it to be based on that current sign you restored, how much would it cost? I don't know a ton about the cost for custom signs, but including the bullet would definitely cost a little more for the color use. There are custom-ish Vignelli-styled metal signs I've seen from Brookstone for around $50/ft, but those generally have less text than the one I posted. They may only do station signs, not destination signs. You'd have to check out a sign shop for any real estimates, but there are new imitation signs with more general views available. A real Vignelli sign for Canal St generally sells for $2k or more, but replicas are cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canal-Street-Chinatown-New-York-City-MTA-Subway-Sign-/131689100848?hash=item1ea9483630:g:1xAAAOSwYIhWhHK~ They're enamel rather than metal, however. Thanks for that, I went to the sign shop and got it for about 25$ and it does look pretty decent. But I had to change "Late Nights to 111 St" to "Late Nights via Flushing Local" because it wasn't centered properly. The bullet did cost a bit more but only about 4$ extra.
