Subway - What If?

A lightning bolt strike causes the switches at Broadway Junction to be in position where all trains on the Broadway-Brooklyn line have to go over the flyover and to the Canarsie line east of Broadway Junction (and likewise, trains on the Canarsie EL "south" of Broadway Junction must go to the Broadway-Brooklyn line after Atlantic Avenue).  The same storm knocked out power to the Canarsie line around Wilson Avenue.

Manhattan-bound (L) trains turn around at Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues. Brooklyn-stranded (L) trains single-track on the Manhattan-bound track to Broadway Junction on the (J)(Z) Manhattan-bound platform. Manhattan-bound (J) and (Z) trains use the middle track and switch to the local tracks west of the station. Track workers are dispatched to lock the switches into the normal position and fix the switch problem.

At the same time, that same storm creates more switching issues as the switch "south" of Broadway-Lafayette on the southbound "local" track is stuck where all trains MUST go to Essex Street on the Nassau/Broadway-Brooklyn line (the northbound side is unaffected).

The (M) continues as normal. The Brooklyn-bound (F) trains are rerouted via the Crosstown or 8 Avenue lines to bypass the problem. While traffic is reduced between Broadway–Lafayette Streets and 2 Avenue, track workers are dispatched to fix the problem.

There also is an issue at DeKalb Avenue where trains from the Bridge MUST run on the Bypass track or go via the tunnel from Manhattan due to switching issues from the Bridge while to Manhattan, there is a rail issue at DeKalb on the Bypass track so all trains going via the Bridge must stop there.

(W) trains are suspended. (N) trains run local in both directions via tunnel and along Broadway and 4 Avenue. (Q) trains run local between Canal Street and DeKalb Avenue (via tunnel). (B) trains are suspended. Those (B) trains that are still in service complete their run with southbound trains terminating at Bay Parkway via West End express. Since there is no traffic coming from one side of the bridge, track workers have some breathing room to correct the issue.

Next scenario:

The New York Christian Center Academy and Calvary Freewill Baptist Church are bombed by terrorists with some serious firepower. The entire Broadway Junction complex is shutdown to determine the scope of damage.

Encouraged by the panic demonstrated on Twitter and Facebook, a “sleeping” terrorist group wakes up to execute their plan prematurely, riding on the ensuing chaos. They take their tools of terror to City Hall. Mayor DeBlasio orders a shutdown of transit (including Citibikes) in the vicinity and a blockade.

Affected stations include:

  • Broadway Junction ((A)(C)(J)(L))
  • Atlantic Avenue ((L))
  • Alabama Avenue ((J))
  • Chambers Street / Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall / City Hall ((1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(A)(C)(E)(J)(R))
  • Fulton Street ((2)(3)(4)(5)(A)(C)(J))

What if 6th ave (B)(D)(F)(M) shutdown in the long terms in weekend, days and nights.

Assuming this is from Rockefeller to Broadway-Lafayette:

(B) Runs via the (D) line from Coney Island to Jay Street Metrotech (R)

(D) Service reduced slightly, runs via the (F) line from Coney Island to Jay Street, then via 8th Ave to Columbus Circle, finally to Bedford Pk Blvd on normal routing

(F) Runs ONLY from 57th St to Jamaica-179th

:75px-NYCS-bull-trans-S6_svg: Special (F) Shuttle from Jay St - MetroTech to Essex St

(M) Ends at Chambers St

Shuttle buses are as follows:

- Route 1: Essex St, 2nd Ave, Broadway-Lafayette, W4, 14th St, 23rd St, 34th St, 42nd St, Rockefeller Center, 57th St (All times)

- Route 2: Grand St, Broadway-Lafayette, W4, 14th St, 23rd St, 34th St, 42nd St, Rockefeller Center, 7th Ave, Columbus Circle (All times)

- Route 3A: Essex St, Broadway-Lafayette, W4, 34th St, 42nd St, Rockefeller Center, 57th St (weekdays)

- Route 3B: Grand St, Broadway-Lafayette, W4, 34th St, 42nd St, Rockefeller Center, 7th Ave, Columbus Circle (weekdays)

No (B) service.

No (C) service

(A) trains via CPW/8th Ave local

(D) trains run 205 to Euclid via Concourse Local, CPW express, 8th avenue express, Cranberry St and Fulton local

(F) trains run 179 to CI via QB Express, 63rd st, Broadway Express, Bridge, 4th avenue express, West End

(N) trains run via montague st, 4th avenue local.

(G) trains extended to 71st Ave and Kings Highway, full length trains

(M) trains to Broad/chambers

(S) trains between Delancey (F) and Coney Island

Some (W) trains extended to Brooklyn to handle expected crowds at Jay metrotech.

Free transfers between Atlantic Barclays and Fulton St, Jay st and Borough Hall.

Bus shuttles between Hoyt Schermerhorn and Columbus Circle stopping at Jay, over Manhattan bridge, then stopping at Grand, and all 6th avenue stations to 57th st, where they turn west, stop at 57/7, and terminate at 59 CC.

This GO would be so much easier if we could keep the local tracks south of w4

A power failure causes a fire to erupt in Whitehall St. The R line south of Rector St is unusable, as well as the New South Ferry station. (The Nassau St connection to Mountague is not affected by this.) The damage will take 2 months to repair. What do you do?

(1) 242 St to Rector St, loop via old SF

(N) via bridge at all times

®Court St to 95 St, 71 Av to Canal St

(W) Ditmars Blvd to Canal St

New scenario:

They’re coming with body bags to pick two people off the tracks after being struck by a train. The bodies were found on the southbound local track at the curve just north of 57 Street–7 Avenue. Police are on the lookout for a possible third person in the tunnels since the two bodies were found with 3 backpacks. Power is out at 57 Street–7 Avenue and 5 Avenue.

Reroute the rush hour trains.

What about the old SF station?

This assumes the old SF station can NOT be put back into service temporarily again and trains can't switch at Rector:

(1) runs with the (2) and (3) into Brooklyn with half the trains terminating each at Utica and Flatbush Avenue (since there really is no other place to terminate them without messing service up elsewhere).  Rector Street and South Ferry are closed.

(N) runs via the Bridge at ALL TIMES.

(R) runs Canal Street (Tunnel Level)-71st Continental ONLY.  Service south of Canal on the (R) is suspended.

(J) and (Z) temporarily become independent lines (no skip-stop after Broadway Junction) in the following manner at ALL TIMES 24/7:

(J) runs between Jamaica Center and Chambers Street, terminating on the "downtown express" track and beginning on the "uptown express" track at Chambers.

(Z) runs the old "Bankers Special"  <RR> route between Chambers Street and 95th Street-Bay Ridge, terminating on the "uptown local" track and beginning on the "downtown local" track at Chambers.  This service replaces the (R) in Brooklyn 24/7 with extra late-night service to compensate for the loss of the (N) via the tunnel during those hours.  When possible, this (Z) can be extended to Essex Street.

I'd do that but with the (R) and (W) terminating at both levels of City Hall and with (J)(Z) running 2 different services, one to Bay Ridge and one to West End

(W) shuttle between Astoria Ditmars and 5 Av.

(N)(Q) to 96 St- 2 Av running Express

(R) Local via 63 St in both directions to not get disrupted by the (W)

-City Hall LL does not have a platform up to code to be used by passengers.

- The (Z) only runs about 10 trains a weekday. It isn't it's own separate line, they are all just (J) trains.

The idea is during this, the  (Z) temporarily is not part of the skip-stop  (J) but its own line.  As noted in my own post, I would have it run the old   <RR> "bankers special" between Chambers and 95th-Bay Ridge while the  (J) runs Chambers to Jamaica Center.

Assuming Power is also shut off between 57th Street-7th Avenue and Lexington Avenue-63rd Street:

(G) trains are extended to 71st-Continental to replace (M) and some (R) service in Queens.

(J) and (Z) trains are extended via Montague Tunnel and 4th Avenue Local to 95th Street-Bay Ridge to replace the (R) in Brooklyn.

(M) trains from 6th Avenue after 47-50 are re-routed via the (F) and then (Q) to 96th Street/2nd Avenue to replace the (Q) on the SAS.

(N) and (R) trains to/from Queens terminate and begin at Lexington Avenue-60th Street with the (R) otherwise suspended.

(N) otherwise operates from Times Square-Coney Island with LIMITED service to/from 57th Street via Montague Tunnel and Broadway Local.

(Q) operates in the same manner as the (N) until it goes via regular route after Prince Street (via the Bridge level at Canal, Manhattan Bridge and stopping at DeKalb).

(W) is suspended.

(W) shuttle between Astoria Ditmars and 5 Av.

(N)(Q) to 96 St- 2 Av running Express

(R) Local via 63 St in both directions to not get disrupted by the (W)

The power is cut from the tracks at 57 Street–7 Avenue and 5 Avenue. That means no trains up to 49 Street from below (if you can even terminate there ) and no trains turning with the switches at Lexington Avenue/59 Street since the switches are on the west end of the station towards 5 Avenue.

(W) is suspended.

The power is out at 57 Street–7 Avenue as well since the third person could be either north or south of the station.

C'mon people… take precautions!

 (N) service is rerouted up 6th Av via 53rd street to Jamaica, running express. Trains in Astoria become shuttles.

(Q) service is truncated to Times Square, and runs local in Manhattan.

(R) service is terminates at Whitehall (late-night service pattern).

(W) service operates as a shuttle between Times Square and Whitehall Street.

Other routes affected by this change:

(M) service is rerouted to Chambers to permit the (N) to run to Queens.

(F) trains now run local in Queens so the (N) can run express. This helps take some pressure off the (E) as two express lines now run via 53rd.

A signal malfunction causes a wide spread blackout on the 6th, 7th, and 8th Avenue lines between 50th Street (49th Street) and 23rd Street. It's rush hours and you got lots of trains, what do you do?

(A) service operates in two sections: Between 207th and 59th (local) and between 14th Street and Far Rockaway (local). Service to Lefferts becomes a shuttle, and RPK (A) service is suspended.

(C) service is suspended.

(E) service operates between Jamaica Center and 21st Street-Queensbridge.

(B) service is suspended.

(D) trains are split up. The southern part is rerouted up Broadway to 96th Street. (W) service is suspended. The northern (D) runs from Norwood to 59th as CPW local.

(F) trains run via the (G) to Bergen, then resume their normal route.

(M) service is rerouted to Chambers Street.

(1) trains operate between 137th Street and 242nd Street.

(2) trains operate via the (5) in Manhattan.

(3) service operates between 148th Street and 96th Street.

What if power went out for three days at coney island yard and stations near the yard especially the Coney Island Terminal. It Effect on (B)(D)(F)(G)(N)(Q)(R)(W) and it's cars.

(D) mainly uses Concourse, and the (F) / (R) have Jamaica.

(D) terminates at Bay Pkwy.

(F) terminates at Kings Highway.

(B) / (Q) terminates at Brighton.

(N) service terminates at Bay Pkwy.

Use diesel equipment to get cars out of CI.
