Then doesn’t the switch get taken out of service to get fixed? No Forest Hills-bound or Jamaica-bound service through Queens Plaza in this case.

The idea is trains can run, but they simply won't allow the trains to go to anything but the express track.

Here goes:

A completely unexpected ice storm (1"+ of freezing rain) hits but the lines are still fully operational, but then, the following happens:

A (Q) train goes BIE right as it was switching from the local to the express track between Parkside Avenue and Prospect Park going northbound

A (D) train goes BIE right at the switch to where it merges into the 4th Avenue line south of 36th Street

A broken rail occurs just into the 11th Street cut towards the QB line from the 60th Street tunnel

The switch that has trains merging from the 63rd Street Tunnel to the QB line is stuck where trains must go express.

The switch that allows trains to move from the express to the local track at Queens Plaza is stuck where trains must go express.

Reroute as needed.

I get the idea (kinda obvious), but logically, it cannot be replaced repaired while it is being used.

I take it for the (D) it's going manhattan bound

so reroute (D) trains via the (N) line northbound  and for (D)'s stuck on west end pretty much  service is suspeneded

as for (Q) trains

as a result (B) train service is suspended and (Q) trains rerouted via   (N) line and service suspeneded for trains still on brighton

Something that popped up on FB:

Due to construction, the 4th Avenue line is shut down between DeKalb Avenue and 95th Street. What would you do?

Edit: Weekend G.O.

I'll just copy my response lol

(D) terminates in Manhattan at either 2nd Av or Chambers (shuttle bus W4 to Grand) and a shuttle train operates between Coney Island and 9th Av.

(N) terminates at Kings Highway via Montague and Brighton Express and a shuttle train operates Coney Island to 8th Av.

(R) terminates at Atlantic-Barclays via Bridge. Shuttle buses in Brooklyn operate between Atlantic-Barclays and either 9th Av, 8th Av or 95th St with each having an express variant

Edit: Weekend G.O.

Assuming only the outer tracks at DeKalb Avenue is in service…

And since the MTA has demonstrated the rare move of bringing a weekday-only service to the weekends…

(D) runs in 2 segments: from Bronx to 2 Avenue; and from 9 Avenue to Coney Island.

(N) runs from 8 Avenue to Coney Island

(R) runs from Forest Hills to Jay Street–MetroTech

(W) runs from Astoria to South Ferry

Lemme add on to that;

The 4th Avenue Line, as well as 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue are closed for the weekend to necessitate electrical work. What do you reroute?

Specificity is very important. To what extent is the closure? Which tracks, switches, platforms, and stations?

An earthquake knocks out the Roosevelt Island station on the (F) line. The line from 63rd St to 36th Street is impassable. What do you do?

(M) runs via (F) from 71st Ave to 179th St

(F) Terminates at 57th Street - 6th Avenue, with a select few running via the (Q) to 96th Street

A southbound (J) train at Chambers Street crashes through the wall, ending up blocking the uptown (6) track and rendering the uptown platform at the station impassable. How do you re-route trains?

(Stations and tracks affected:

Uptown (6) track and downtown (J) track impassable.

Uptown (4)(5)(6) platform unsafe for customers, and thus being skipped.)

Do you know how fast said train would have to go in order to get that far? Never mind the fact that the buildings up above would be unstable since the foundations go through the station.

In either case...

(J) Jamaica Center to Essex St

(M) 71 Av to 2 Av, Myrtle Av to Metropolitan Av

(Z) suspended

(4) Woodlawn to 86 St, Borough Hall to Utica Av

(5) Dyre Av to 180 St

(6) Pelham Bay Park to 42 St

Good point.  I suspect there would no service on either line for a long time.

Anyway, next:

Switches in the area between Queens Plaza and 36th Street on the QP line (specifically where the (F) joins the line from Queensbridge) have gone totally haywire, making it impossible to run any trains in that area (trains can use the Queens Plaza station itself, however, as long as the go back from there the other way as those switches are unaffected).

  • 2 weeks later...

What if....

Some guy in the 207th Yard has the really stupid idea of sending one of the R46s assigned to the (A) down the (1)?

Southbound, it would not get past 207th Street.

Northbound, it would not get past 238th Street.
