LIRR And MNRR Random Thoughts Thread

Expect crowding on Metro-North's Hudson Line this week due to Amtrak temporarily suspending the Empire Line between New York City and Croton-Harmon. The suspension is due to "structure issues" of a parking garage in Hell's Kitchen that Amtrak runs underneath. Repairs are underway. Some Amtrak trains are running between Croton-Harmon and Albany. Metro-North is cross-honoring Amtrak passengers between GCT and Croton-Harmon.

Service has been restored on Amtrak’s Empire Line as of Thursday, November 16. There will be some delays up until Saturday until both tracks are restored.

Is the LIRR short on trains? A bunch of trains are canceled due to slippery rail conditions.

One of the Jamaica- Atlantic Terminal shuttles is canceled and there isn't even any leaves on that route LOL

I'm guessing a lot of LIRR MUs are OOS due to flat wheels?

TrainTime has an LIRR M3 on train 1245 from Babylon going into Grand Central Madison.  I thought the LIRR M3s couldn't go into GCM.  What is going on?!

https://imgur.com/a/THxn2Tr

Update:  The train was just cancelled at Jamaica because of the ongoing signal problems in and out of GCM.  Very weird sight to see.

Lots of flat wheels means not enough cars in service to make the sets.

What's going on with these political protests at/outside Grand Central and Penn Station every other night? My coworkers complain bitterly about how difficult it is to get to their trains, and some of them are quite scared of the protestors (they've shown me some pretty crazy videos of doors and windows getting smashed). MTA PD and NYPD seem to just watch but not really intervene from what I can tell.

How many M3s are left now?

If you just scrolled up, there was a post regarding how many are left and that was as of 2 weeks ago. They’re not actively getting rid of them just yet since the M9A’s aren’t here yet. So if you counted, should be around 98 cars give or take.

M3A’s*. They haven’t scrapped any M3A’s that I know of except maybe one pair but I don’t know the fleet numbers.

They scrapped one, parted out one, ones been long term out of service for the last year, and there’s two others that are mismatched with each other.

Interesting, these are stored at Harmon? 8079 and 8096 are running around as a pair so their mates are probably one of the above. Maybe I'll take a look around next time I'm up there.

Nope, the out of service pair is at Highbridge. The parts pair is at Brewster behind the fire tank car.

Just had a thought but theoretically can’t MNR loan LIRR some Shoreliners for the summer? I’m sure they can spare about 10-12 cars or so to put the C3’s on more heavily used lines. It’s similar to what they did with the MARC cars a couple years back.

MNRR doesnt have enough shoreliners to be loaned to LIRR. LIRR is seeking to lease 26 non-powered coach cars.

Really? I thought MARC only leased about 7-8 coaches where they can't even utilize the cab car because it doesn't work with LIRR's signaling system. If they're looking for 26 coaches, they'll need a whole lot more engines as they would have to double-end the trains with DE/DM30AC's and this is on top of their Cannonball trains and Penn Station directs.

Regardless, I guess I should shelve this idea until CDOT receives their new coaches for use on the Hartford, Danbury and Waterbury lines which may allow MNR/CDOT to lease some Shoreliners to LIRR. As it stands, a good chunk of the Hudson Line trains to Poughkeepsie are packed especially in the summer.

I'm not sure how they will deal with the availability of locomotives but the lease contract is closing by the next board meeting.

Doing the math here. MNR's fleet has around 184 Shoreliners, leave 15 out as spares. Leaves us with 169 to play around with.

MNR only really needs maxi-Bombs (full 7 cars + an engine) during the rush, other than that, they can get away with 6 cars or less. I would assume that in a given day, MNR probably uses around 22 Gennies, 14 of which can have the full 7 cars and the rest can run with 5 cars. This leaves us with 31 cars remaining. The BL20 mini-Bomb sets only run with 2 coaches + cab car and there are only around 3-4 of them and the remaining left from here could be sent to LIRR. Sometimes they run a maxi-Bomb on Waterbury or Danbury (during off-peak hours) which is unnecessary but with this equipment manipulation, it'd be less taxing on the engines.
