Overnight bus service

Via Garibaldi 8

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at several local bus routes and I'm pretty surprised to see how few of them offer overnight service.  With the addition of Bus Time, it makes me wonder if the (MTA) will consider overnight service for some lines that have seen it go by the waste side.  IMO once the system is up in the five boroughs, it is something that should be looked into by the (MTA) once they see how ridership goes, which I believe will increase, provided that bunching is dealt with and service becomes more reliable.

What routes do you have in mind? Overnight services in subway-covered areas in particular tends to be overkill, as riders out at 2am are rarely the elderly or disabled. The Manhattan overnight service setup is pretty well-configured, I think, but the further away from the city the worse it gets.

Some crosstown routes for example don't have any overnight service and there are no subways that can cover those routes.  Then you have routes in the outer boroughs that have no overnight service.  I certainly wouldn't go overkill, but the (MTA) has killed overnight service on quite  a few routes leaving some communities with no bus service at all or anything else for that matter.  In some cases, it would be a matter of adding 3 or 4 buses at the most.

That leaves the M8, the M21, M22, the M66, the M72, the M106, and the M116.

The M106 and M116 are probably the least excusable of those, as there aren't many options up there and there are a fair amount of people trying to get around at those times. The 66 and 72 have decent access to the 79 and F train, and tend to serve a crowd that isn't likely to be prowling the streets at 4am. The 21 and 22 -- the 22 is pretty well-covered by the 15 on the East Side, and nobody is even out in BPC past 8pm, let alone 2am...no ridership there; the 21 has such low ridership in the first place that there'd have to be a real reason for that service. The M8, I personally think the last buses around 1:30 AM are pretty reasonable, especially since the 14 isn't too far and the M2's still running across 8th to the Broadway and Lex lines at late times too. Besides, Quill has occasionally run unannounced overnight service on the M8 well into 3/4 AM on nights when service is necessary.

Yeah that's not exactly great by any means... Nothing between 42nd to 79th street and nothing along 34th street seems a bit extreme to me.  I'm also interested in routes that had their overnight service axed where there are few to no alternatives.

Bit of a stretch...the M14A along Ave A and M14D along Ave D run all night long. It's just that after 1am the 14A goes to Chelsea Piers, but it's still service. The M8 is the crosstown that doesn't run at night in the Village area.

Didn't I just list them all?

Your list is incomplete and missing several routes (for example, the Bx29 and Bx30 in the Bronx, and the B100 and B103 in Brooklyn). You also mentioned some Limited and Select services as well as branches that don't run overnight, which I don't really see the point of. I mean, if you're going to mention that Limited and Select routes don't run overnight, and list some of them, shouldn't you essentially list every single Limited and Select route?

No, because some Limited and Select do run overnight.

No SBS routes run overnight. They all have local counterparts instead except for the S79, M34 & M34A which have no service whatsoever

The ONLY limited buses that run overnight are the Q53 and Q100

But the M15 does run at night. My list included only routes that have no service at all overnight. Barring the Q53 and Q100, none of the Limited or Select routes run at night, but many of them have local counterparts that are still running. If I listed every the M15SBS, then I would have to list every single Limited and Select route (again, barring the Q53 and Q100) for completeness' sake, which is not only a waste of space, but is something that doesn't merit mentioning, because again, most of them still have local service running, which is the exact same route. My post from last page:

On a side note, since every page is only 10 posts now, that means we burned through a whole page just talking about lists.

M14

M23

M42

M79

M86

M96

And Bx6, Bx15, Bx19, and M60. (All of them are crosstown in Manhattan.)

What I would openly wonder though is: should there be a separate overnight route network? Toronto has a special "Blue Route" network of overnight routes.
